AngSimbuhanPambayang Kolehiyo ng Mauban Official Publication Year 2025- 2026Ang Simbuhan - PKM angs imbuhanpkm@gmail.comEditorialILLUSTRATION BY:Marianne Unice UrgellesThere was a time when walking through the halls of Pambayang Kolehiyo ng Mauban felt like rereading the same page; neat hair, plain nails, identical looks. Everything was uniform, everything was controlled. Students followed rules well, but expression was a stranger. But look around now. PKM isn’t that silent frame of sameness anymore. The campus has changed, and so have we. Today, strands of blonde and ash catch the sunlight. Fingernails gleam with art, confidence, and quiet defiance. Earrings may still wait for their turn, but expression has already slipped back in; subtle, yet powerful. Every shade of color, every small detail, every choice says something true: PKM is learning to embrace individuality. So we ask, “Bakit nga ba ganito na sa PKM? Dati hindi, ngayon oo.” Because growth asks for change. Because the world outside is louder, braver, and more creative than ever, and education can’t afford to stay silent. This is not rebellion. This is redefinition. Freedom doesn’t destroy discipline; it deepens it. It teaches us to make choices with purpose, to respect both ourselves and the community we belong to. PKM’s transformation is not just a policy; it is a reflection of progress, of listening, of trust. We have learned that education is not only about numbers and grammar; it is about confidence, identity, and the courage to be real. Now that expression lives again in our hallways, the question isn’t “Why did it change?” but “What will we do with this freedom?” Will we use it to inspire, to create, to uplift? Or will we waste it on pride and carelessness? The answer lies in us. Because the new PKM is not built on sameness anymore. It is built on respect, creativity, and authenticity. The change we see today is not just in our hair or nails; it is in how we think, how we see each other, and how we choose to grow.2PKM is different now, and that is something to celebrate, but also something to protect. May we continue to express, but never forget to respect. May we stay colorful, yet kind. And may every strand, every color, and every choice remind us that freedom, when used wisely, is the most beautiful lesson we could ever learn.THE COLORS OFEXPRESSION //Rei Anne Manalstas

They are speaking metaphorically of the so-called “calamity,” which placed us in constant fear. At first, I thought they were referring to the horror we would encounter, until I understood the true meaning behind it. Professors are the true heroes. They are architects who plan and execute the “blueprint” of our careers. They are not villains we must defeat but mentors who train us to become superheroes. They are also human like us, yet they always try to give their best for their students. They are vulnerable to frustration—because student failure reflects their effectiveness as facilitators of learning. In the classroom, students may laugh when someone gives incorrect answers in recitation or fails in exams. Students may find it “funny,” as if it’s not a concern worth talking about. Insensitivity is rampant, placing laughter in the wrong context. We are fortunate that we are still able to continue in college. Yet we waste privileges that not all students are given to. Dreamers whose dreams were compromised are entirely different from students who act like tourists in class. This made me realize that the main academic gap is not found in students’ intelligence but rather in their

The celebration featured both online and on-site competitions. Starting mid-April, students shared their entries for Food Photography, Cooking Tutorial Videos, Food-Related Puns, Food- Inspired Memes, and Photo Essays, turning social media into a gallery of humor, artistry, and local flavor. These digital contests brought a modern twist to traditional cuisine, with stunning images, creative jokes, and heartfelt stories about Filipino food. The highlight of the month came on April 22, when the campus hosted the On-the-Spot Poster Making contest and the Food Knowledge Quiz Bee. The poster making activity filled the TLE Laboratory with vibrant artworks reflecting the theme “Hapag ng Kultura: Lutong Maubanin, Boses ng Kabataang Malikhaing Tungo sa Bayang Mithiin,” while the quiz bee tested students’ knowledge of Filipino dishes, nutrition, and culinary traditions. Both events combined fun and learning, while inspiring everyone to appreciate local cuisine. Filipino Food Month 2025 was not just about contests—it was about celebrating identity. Every photo, meme, recipe, and poster reminded the PKM community that food is more than sustenance; it is culture, memory, and pride. With the leadership of Elwin Baraquil, SARE Org President and the support of the school, the event became a colorful and meaningful success that students will surely remember. On May 7, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m., first-year students of Pambayang Kolehiyo ng Mauban (PKM) from various programs, including Bachelor of Secondary Education majors in Social Studies, English, Math, and Filipino; Bachelor of Elementary Education; Bachelor of Science in Accounting Information System; Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting; and Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education majors in Agricultural Crops Production (BTVTEd-ACP) and Foods and Service Management (BTVTEd-FSM), successfully conducted a Coastal Clean-Up activity at Barangay Daungan, Mauban, Quezon, in partial fulfillment of their National Service Training Program (NSTP) requirements.
//Anilo Astoveza
Feature12HABANG BUHAYTHE ART OF STAYING ALIVE// Ella Mae De la CruzThe part that broke me, and then began to mend me, was how he handled the crushing weight of being alone. He does not have a family to hold him; he has chickens. He calls them, spoiled, loved, into his lap. He refused to sell his favorite chicken for five hundred pesos, even when he was eating sapal (coconut residue) just to survive.“Mahal ko ito ay,” he said. At that moment, I realized that if Tatay Tony could find a reason to love a chicken and a life that had been so hard to him, perhaps I could find a reason to love the person staring back at me in the mirror. The climax of my healing came when Tatay Tony spoke about the very thing I had contemplated the night before. His voice wasn’t judgemental; it was filled with a wide understanding that felt like a warm embrace. He spoke of his own body with a reverence I had forgotten: “Mahal ko ang sarili ko, aba’y sarili kong katawan. I entered the classroom wanting to die, I left it wanting to endure. Tatay Tony does not know me. He will likely never see the poem I’m finally picking up my pen to write, or the paintings I am slowly starting to color again. But he saved me. He showed me that hope isn’t the absence of darkness, it’s the small, steady lights of an old man in Mauban, shaving a broom and calling out to his chickens. As Ma’am Cali observed, even in the harshest of circumstances, Tatay Tony carries his life with such lightness that it reminds you how beautiful it is to simply be here. My battle with MDD isn’t over. The blues will come back. But when they do, I will whisper his words to myself. “Habang buhay, nagpapakabuhay.” I will stay alive, I will keep living. Because if Tatay Tony can find the warmth in the shadows, then so can I.Ma’am Cali, witnessing his life, noted with a heavy heart “Hindi ko ma-imagine ‘yung everyday life niya, at kung papa’no siya nakakaraos sa pagkain ng sapal lang. Siguro iyun din ang nagtulak sa’kin na babalik at babalikan ko to.”TATAY TONYTATAY TONY For 20 years, I have existed. But for the last year, I have not really been living. I am one of so many people diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). People often think depression is a choice, a lack of faith, or a result of too much time on a smartphone. They don’t see the voices that act like a constant, rhythmic, drumbeat, urging you to disappear. They do not feel the numbness that is so heavy you’d rather carve a scar into your wrist or burn your skin just to feel a flicker of reality. By the time I walked into Ma’am Cali’s Community Engagement class that Tuesday afternoon, I was a ghost. The night before, I had stood on the edge of a final decision. I was exhausted, starving, and ready to let the darkness win. Then, she played a Documentary video entitled “Pananaw” , a film by Enverga University Students, under Diez Production. There, I met Tatay Tony. He lives in a small bungalow in Barangay Sto. Angel, Mauban Quezon, surrounded by silence and his chickens. He is blind and alone. Within minutes of hearing him speak, the heavy weight in my chest began to crack. I watched him shave coconut fronds for three days just to make one broom. One broom that sells for twenty pesos. I heard how people cheated him, taking his work and never paying, and I waited for him to sound angry. I waited for him to sound like me; bitter, lost, and tired of the world’s cruelty. I felt a tear escape. I had every privilege of sight and youth, yet I was the one who wanted to give up. He had nothing, yet he heard everything because he had peace.

Sabi nila, kapag gusto mo, may paraan.
