THE JOURNEY BEGINS
SEMESTER 1 Foundations of Design Introducing the basics of drawing, geometry, and form. The first semester was about understanding the roots of design by learning to observe, draw, and explore visual balance. From sketching plants and heritage structures to experimenting with colors and geometric compositions, every assignment taught me to see differently and express through form, texture, and line. Observation Studies Studying how light and color blend across each layer of leaves A close observation of texture and pattern These early sketches helped me slow down and truly observe the small details in nature how texture, light, and structure blend so effortlessly to create beauty. When I was drawing a single leaf or branch, I started noticing how design already lives in nature, in the way every line and shade falls into place. Working with color pencils taught me patience and focus, and made me realize how much depth a simple form can hold when you really look at it. Spending time with these studies also made me more mindful; I began to enjoy the process more than the final result. It was in these quiet moments that I learned how observation, consistency, and curiosity form the base of creativity. These drawings built my confidence and gave me a strong foundation to understand form, proportion, and balance lessons that still guide how I approach my designs today..
Lines and Rhythm Study Music in motion Balance through precision These line exercises opened up a whole new understanding of how simple elements can express movement, rhythm, and emotion. Through repeated practice, I explored how lines could completely change the feel of a surface whether they were straight, curved, dense, or faint. Each type of line carried its own mood and energy. Some lines felt bold and confident, while others appeared soft and calm. We began with simple hand movements, trying to keep the strokes even and steady, and gradually learned to control the pressure, the flow, and the spacing. The music-based exercise was one of the most memorable parts of this process. With my eyes closed, I let the sound guide my movement , translating rhythm into visual form. The fast beats led to quick, overlapping strokes, while the softer melodies encouraged smoother, flowing curves. It was the first time I experienced how visual art can be influenced by another sense sound. This activity allowed me to loosen up creatively, trust my instincts, and draw without overthinking. I realized that these line practices built a strong foundation for everything I learned. They improved my hand coordination, balance, and overall observation skills. Morover, they taught me that design doesn’t always start with big ideas sometimes, it begins with a single line, repeated with curiosity, until it turns into something meaningful.
Color Theory Study Exploring color interaction Shade Study Stipling Technique for the Evil Eye Hand- Hamsa This exercise helped me explore the emotional side of color and how form interacts with it. By using contrasting and complementary shades, I learned how colors communicate feelings and create visual rhythm. It made me realize how much balance matters everywhere in design even a single shift in tone could change the entire mood of the artwork. This study taught me to see color not just as decoration but as a design language that can express movement, depth, and balance. This artwork is part of our shade study, where we explored different hatching techniques to understand how light, shadow, and depth can be created through lines or dots. For this piece, I chose the stippling method building form through tiny, patient dots that slowly come together to create tone and texture. I used the Hamsa (Evil Eye Hand) as my subject because I’ve always been drawn to its meaning of protection and positivity. The process helped me appreciate how gradual layering can create depth. This study strengthened my understanding of how shading can transform a simple outline into something more expressive and alive.
SEMESTER 2 Form, Space & Visual Thinking Show exploration, observation, and understanding of space, material, and visual balance. Semester 2 focused on developing a deeper understanding of form, structure, and spatial relationships in design. Through exercises in material studies, geometric compositions, and photography, I learned how to organize visual elements to create balance and clarity. This semester strengthened my ability to observe details, experiment with composition, and translate abstract ideas into structured visual outcomes. It built a strong foundation for applying design principles thoughtfully and purposefully in future projects. Product Photography Exploring light, form, and detail through product photography. This assignment introduced us to the principles of product photography and the understanding how light, shadow, and form interact to create visual clarity and appeal. The focus was to capture objects in a way that highlights their design, materiality, and craftsmanship. Through multiple lighting arrangements , I observed how subtle shifts in illumination could change the perception of surface texture and depth. This process taught me how photography can communicate a product’s essence through visual balance, composition, and mood. Beyond just capturing an image, I learned how the lens becomes a tool of design itself translating form into emotion and function into beauty.
Digital Representation Exploring Visual Blends through Photoshop Poster Design for an Art Event Using Adobe Illustrator In this assignment for the Digital Representation module, I explored the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop .The exercise involved merging two contrasting visuals , so I took the character named Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, and a vibrant background of colorful electronic pixels. Through this, I learned how to manipulate layers, adjust color tones, and use masking tools to create a cohesive and imaginative digital artwork. The process allowed me to understand how digital editing can transform ordinary images into expressive narratives, combining fantasy and reality. In this assignment, I explored the creative possibilities of Adobe Illustrator by designing a promotional poster for an art event. The goal was to create a visually engaging layout that effectively communicated event details while maintaining a sense of balance and playfulness. Through this exercise, I learned the importance of hierarchy, alignment, and typography in poster design, as well as how vector tools can bring precision and clarity to illustrations.
Camera and Lighting Techniques Exploring Nature Through the Lens In this photography module, we explored outdoor photography using a professional DSLR camera to understand how light, focus, and exposure influence visual storytelling. The assignment involved stepping outside the class and observing nature closely. We learned to adjust ISO, shutter speed, and manually, understanding how each setting contributes to capturing mood and clarity. This experience helped me gain hands-on confidence in using the camera e and made me more aware of composition, and natural lighting in photography.
SEMESTER 3 Graphic Design Foundations Learning composition, color, and communication through design. Semester 3 marked the beginning of my deeper journey into the world of graphic design. From understanding the history and evolution of design toexploring the elements that make visuals truly communicate. What made this semester truly special was realizing how design is not just about aesthetics but about purpose . Every line, color, and form holds meaning. It was the semester where I began finding my visual voice and shaping the designer I’m becoming. Colour and Forms Turquoise Color Study Floral Color Observation In this exercise from Colour and Form, I explored both the emotional and perceptual aspects of color. Beginning with turquoise, a color that personally resonates with me for its freshness and clarity, I learned how hues can shape mood and meaning in design. The floral observation further refined my ability to notice subtle differences in tones and saturation using only the naked eye. Together, these explorations deepened my appreciation for the expressive and communicative potential of color in visual composition.
History of Graphic Design Tracing the digital transformation of design For this assignment, I explored the topic “Design Tools in Graphic Design” to understand how technology has shaped the way designers create and communicate.I studied the transition from traditional design methods to the introduction of digital tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and how these innovations revolutionized visual communication. Creating this book allowed me to see how each technological milestone expanded creative possibilities and accessibility in the design field. I learned how tools are not just technical instruments but extensions of the designer’s imagination like shaping styles, workflows, and the very language of design. This project deepened my appreciation for the relationship between design history, technology, and evolving creative expression.
Basics of Graphic Design Logo Redesign Reimagining identity through simplicity and modern refinement — a refreshed visual voice for STASH TEA.
A modern identity brewed with calm sophistication Banner Mockup In this project, I redesigned the visual identity for STASH, a tea brand based in Portland. The goal was to modernize the brand while keeping its calm and organic essence intact. Extending the redesign across packaging, business cards, signage, and posters helped me understand how brand systems maintain consistency through different applications. This assignment strengthened my sense of composition, hierarchy, and the balance between simplicity and expression in design.
Elements of Graphic Design Playing card design Bringing design elements to life through play, color, and motion — where learning meets fun. In this project, I created a series of playing cards titled Zoom a Little, designed to make learning about the elements of graphic design engaging and accessible for children and teenagers. The theme I chose was bright, pop-inspired, and food-related which was filled with quirky humor and colorful visuals that would attract audiences of all ages. Every card featured playful dialogues and design elements like form, color, and texture expressed through simple yet dynamic compositions. Through this process, I learned how to use typography expressively, balance visual hierarchy, and design for both clarity and fun. The challenge was to keep the cards educational without losing their visual energy or playful nature. This project taught me how design can educate through creativity by transforming core design principles into something tangible, interactive, and joyfully communicative.
SEMESTER 4 Identity & Visual Communication Building visual narratives and understanding brand aesthetics. Semester 4 was a creatively enriching journey where I truly began to blend storytelling, design, and emotion together. This semester pushed me to explore the finer details of visual communication from understanding the nuances of film and scriptwriting to experimenting with concept art and typography. It gave me the space to think not just as a designer but as a storyteller , someone who creates visuals that speak and connect.Overall, Semester 4 felt like a bridge between imagination and intent, shaping my design thinking into more expressive and purposeful creations. Film Appreciation Exploring emotions, culture, and perspective through the lens of cinema. The Film Appreciation module was an exploration of how cinema communicates through visuals, sound, and rhythm. Watching films like Latcho Drom, The Great Indian Kitchen and Rashomon, made me see how storytelling in film is deeply connected to design through framing, composition, color, and atmosphere. Each film taught me something new . I learned to observe a film for its visual language , how every shot is crafted to evoke feeling and meaning. This module helped me think like a visual storyteller, appreciating the balance between aesthetics, narrative, and human experience in cinema.
Concept Art Comic Book “Sangraahak” — a dark visual journey into the orphanage of forgotten souls. Exploring imagination through the nostalgic world of “The Lockdown Diaries.” This module allowed me to explore the process of visual storytelling from developing ideas and scripts to creating characters, and comic layouts. At first , the group project was a dark and emotional narrative set in a mysterious orphanage, where we focused on character sketches, and composition. In my zine project, captured the storytelling highlighting the self-reflection of everyday life during the lockdown. These projects taught me how tone, setting, and color.palette can completely transform the way a story is felt and understood.
Story- telling and Script - Writing A heartfelt story of love, loss, and the unspoken bonds that shape our lives In this module, I explored the emotional and structural depth of storytelling by understanding how every story carries a heartbeat of its own. For my solo work, I created Padaav: The Stages of Life, a touching narrative about a father and daughter’s evolving relationship through the cycles of love, sacrifice, and realization. Alongside, our group project Sangrahak took more mysterious turn by blending psychological and visual storytelling in a narrative about an orphan with a haunting past. These works allowed me to experience both emotional drama and thriller writing, strengthening my understanding of dialogue, and narrative rhythm. This module truly taught me how stories breathe through emotion, conflict, and connection.
Elements of Typography Duniya Ko Rang Do — expressing the vibrance of color through the power of type. In the Elements of Typography module, I explored how type itself can become a powerful visual element which is capable of carrying meaning, emotion, and brand identity without the need for imagery. As part of the assignment, I created a typography- based advertisement poster for Birla Opus Paints, where the tagline of the brand was “Duniya Ko Rang Do” which conveys the brand’s promise of adding color and creativity to everyday life. This module deepened my understanding of how effective visual communication can emerge purely from letterforms and layout.
Font Design A modern twist to tradition — reimagining Gujarati letterforms through custom typography
Font Design Display A glimpse from the Typography Display showcasing the journey of creating a custom Gujarati font, from hand-drawn letterforms to structured grids and final compositions.
Exploring the essence of my favorite Gujarati letter through expressive brush strokes — experimenting with tools, textures, and forms to capture its personality A Study of Strokes and Curves This module was one of the most explorative and hands-on experiences of the semester. We began by understanding how a letter can be expressed through different tools and materials , from calligraphy pens and Devanagari tools to large sponge tools and chisel pens. I explored a Gujarati letter in my own abstract, expressive way by giving it curved and dynamic strokes that carried a sense of motion and energy. The process was deeply experimental . I practiced a single letter across multiple pages, creating numerous variations, some successful, some not, but each leading to new discoveries. We first practiced on graph paper to understand proportions and grids, then moved on to bond paper and ivory sheets for refinement.Gradually, through this iterative process, I developed my own custom Gujarati font. This module taught me not just how to design a font, but how to see language as a living form of art which has been evolving through patience, repetition, and imagination.
SEMESTER 5 Design for Media & Publication Exploring animation drawing, publication design, research, and cinematography. Semester 5 was a turning point where my design learning moved from static visuals to storytelling through movement and media. It was about understanding how design breathes life when it begins to move, print, and speak. Through Drawing for Animation, I learned how gesture, expression, and movement bring character and emotion to life. Print and Publication Design reconnected me with layout and editorial storytelling, teaching me how visuals and text can guide a reader’s journey on paper. Research Methods strengthened my ability to think critically and conceptually to find meaning and structure behind every creative decision. Moving into Cinematography and Editing, I discovered how framing, lighting, rhythm, and sound shape the way stories are felt. Altogether, Semester 5 helped me bridge the worlds of design and film by turning visuals into narratives and creativity into communication. Drawing for Animation Exploring movement through imagination from morphing shapes to a heartwarming animated story, “My Favorite Croissant.” This module was my first real step into the world of motion and storytelling through visuals. I began by exploring the basics of movement with morph animations and flipbook which helped me understand the essence of weight, timing, and transition. The most exciting part was my animation short, My Favorite Croissant, which blended my love for narrative and character expression with technical drawing.Through this module, I learned how the simplest movement can bring drawings to life when guided by rhythm, emotion, and intent.

Research Methods Brewing stories, warmth, and design through research. A brand born from research The Research Methods module taught me how design is not just about visuals but about understanding people, culture, and purpose. The process began with a café poster project, where I researched what makes a café conceptually appealing. In a group project, we created a sustainable fashion pop-up brand . We developed its identity system, all based on thorough research and interviews. Overall, this module helped me build a foundation in critical thinking, visual research, and the ability to transform insights into meaningful, strategic design outcomes.
Reflection Looking back at my journey and how my design language evolved. Design, for me, has been a journey of discovering balance between thought and expression, structure and emotion. Each semester added its own layer to how I think, observe, and create. From learning the discipline of form to embracing the unpredictability of ideas, my design voice has grown not through perfection, but through process. These years have taught me that design isn’t just what we see, it’s how we feel it. It’s the rhythm in white space, the warmth of texture, and the quiet story behind every curve and color. Every project, every experiment, every critique has shaped the designer I am becoming curious, patient, and deeply connected to my work. Layers & Lines is not just the name of this portfolio, but a reflection of that growth of how every line I’ve drawn and every layer I’ve explored has led me closer to understanding what design truly means to me. Every design begins with a quiet observation.
