Mental health facilities that tend to be formal and institutional can create psychological distance for the community. Recovery does not end with clinical treatment. Limited community-based aftercare facilities, weak social support, and the risk of social isolation highlight the need for transitional spaces before individuals reintegrate into society. Cisarua offers a different setting through its cool climate, lush vegetation, visual tranquility, and proximity to the West Java Provincial Mental Hospital. These potentials form the basis for the design of Bandung Restorative Hub as a restorative environment that integrates mental health, collective living, and multisensory experiences. Project IssuesUrban Pressure Increased urban activity, demands, and urban life pressures can contribute to declining mental health and psychological quality of life.Mental Health Stigma The stigma surrounding mental health is still strong, making people reluctant to seek treatment and access mental health services.Aftercare Gap Limited community-based aftercare facilities result in an incomplete recovery process after clinical treatment, especially for the general public..Social Isolation Limited social interaction and lack of social support can worsen mental health conditions, while social housing environments still lack integration. Underutilized Natural Potential Cool air, lush vegetation, and a calm atmosphere offer therapeutic potential, but have not yet been fully utilized as part of the recovery environment.
Healing ExperienceA multisensory experience that creates a calm, comfortable environment and supports psychological recovery. Sensory Based Healing Architecture C O N C E P TAn approach that integrates multisensory spatial experiences to support the psychological recovery process. Visual Natural light, views, and vegetation are incorporated to create a calming visual experience. Olfactory Aromatic plants and fresh air provide natural olfactory stimulation that promotes comfort. Auditory The sounds of water, wind, and the natural environment are used to create a calmer spatial atmosphere. Tactile Natural materials and varied textures provide a warm and soothing tactile experience. Thermal Airflow, shade, and sunlight create comfortable and natural thermal conditions.
34The massing process was developed through a series of gradual form transformations, beginning with the basic mass, followed by repetition, subtraction, and deformation. Each stage was adapted to functional requirements, site conditions, and the design approach to create a responsive final form.125 BASIC SHAPE Hasil akhir merupakan transformasi massa yang mempertimbangkan fungsi, konteks tapak, ruang terbuka, dan pengalaman multisensori untuk mendukung lingkungan pemulihan psikologis. REPETITION The basic mass is repeated and arranged into several parts according to functional requirements, spatial capacity, and relationships between activities. Portions of the mass are subtracted to create open spaces, provide separation between buildings, and accommodate areas that support user interaction and activities. Portions of the mass are further reduced to create additional open spaces, establishing visual and spatial connections between the masses. The final result is a mass transformation that considers function, site context, open spaces, and multisensory experiences to support a psychologically restorative environment. This approach emphasizes a connection with nature, transitional spaces, togetherness, and local expression combined with modern technology and materials. This theme is relevant to the project’s location within the Sundanese cultural region and the educational district of Jatinangor. Therefore, Neo Sunda is presented not merely as an ornament, but as an architectural identity and way of living that responds to contemporary student life.T H E M ET R A D I T I O N A LHirup Sauyunan, meaning living in harmony and supporting one another, reflects ideal Sundanese values: Harmony and Peace: Conflicts are resolved through discussion, fostering harmonious relationships. S i t e | 8 . 7 5 0 m ² Jalan Wastukencana, Babakan Ciamis, Bandung, West Java, IndonesiaSite Context The Al-Ukhuwah Mosque Redesign Project is located in an area surrounded by residential neighborhoods and community activities, creating a strong connection with the social life of the surrounding community. The active character of the area, supported by existing buildings and facilities around the site, makes the mosque an integral part of the environment used by the community in their daily activities. The presence of Al-Ukhuwah Mosque is not limited to its function as a place of worship, but also extends to the social activities of the surrounding community. The site’s context within an established urban environment provides a basis for understanding the relationship between the mosque, its users, and the character of the surrounding area.
PotentialAl-Ukhuwah Mosque has strong potential due to its location within an active community environment. Its proximity to residential areas and various surrounding activities provides an opportunity to establish a strong connection with the community while supporting a range of religious and social activities. The presence of open spaces and direct connections with the surrounding environment offers opportunities to create a more open and comfortable mosque atmosphere. The established site and surrounding context also provide an opportunity to strengthen the mosque’s role as both a place of worship and a space for community interaction.Analysis The site of Al-Ukhuwah Mosque is connected to the surrounding road network and community activities. Access to the site supports the movement of both vehicles and pedestrians, particularly during prayer times when activity around the mosque increases. The sun moves f rom east to west, causing the eastern and western sides of the building to receive direct sunlight at higher intensities. This condition becomes one of the environmental factors affecting thermal comfort within the building, particularly in the morning and afternoon. Views f rom the site are predominantly characterized by the built environment and community activities surrounding Al-Ukhuwah Mosque . The proximity of buildings and residential areas creates a local visual character oriented toward the surrounding environment, with open spaces and areas around the mosque forming part of the users’ visual experience. The main sources of noise come f rom vehicle traff ic and community activities around the site. Noise levels may increase at certain times when activity intensif ies, particularly during prayer services and social activities in the surrounding environment. The redesign of Al-Ukhuwah Mosque aims to improve the quality of its functions, comfort, and spatial organization to better support both religious activities and community social activities. The reorganization is intended to optimize spatial relationships, circulation, and supporting facilities according to user needs, enabling the mosque to function more effectively, comfortably, and in harmony with its surrounding environment.
Site DevelopmentSITE PLAN The site development of Al-Ukhuwah Mosque is carried out by organizing the relationship between the building, access, circulation, and open spaces in a more integrated manner. The site layout considers ease of access for users, connectivity between outdoor and indoor areas, and the provision of open spaces that support both religious and social activities. This development aims to create a more organized and comfortable mosque environment with a harmonious relationship to its surrounding context.
