BRICKING NEWS Issue. 1 (but slow) September 2026
AT THE MOVIES Caught 5 movies this month? Spoilies ahead ~ I thought the memes of needing to read Crime and Punishment were a joke until I actually saw the movie. Although the plot was slow at times, I found myself completely floored at the end. It was as if the Vine Boom sound effect was playing at each reveal. I think what makes this more sinister is the combination of the cute characters and the initial unassuming plot. When I eventually see the murder on screen and the culprit gets revealed it feels so much worse than if this was live-action. This movie got me pulling out ‘On National Culture’ to analyse how this film portrayed colonialism. Shockingly good watch. Those of you who know me well know that this is my favorite movie of all time so when NUSC said that they were screening this you best believe I had to catch it. Seeing two characters who could not be more different form such a deep friendship was very heartening. This version of the film was slightly brighter than the other versions that I had watched so I found myself noticing details that I hadn’t noticed previously. The communal experience of watching it with some of my batchmates in a place I once called home was also incredibly special to me. We also got Grace xenonite keychains! Perhaps the most anticipated release this year but I was not particularly impressed by this — found myself getting bored at times. Also, Tom Holland looked so out of place in this film he just looked like weak spiderman to me. This was my first time watching a film in IMAX however, and I did enjoy the experience. Overall was a good watch but there was A LOT of exposition to sit through. For some reason I found myself drawn to Hachiware
AT THE MOVIES Caught some filmhouse stuff too! I must say this film will probably change the trajectory of my life quite significantly. The soundtrack is a masterpiece and I felt my heartstrings being tugged at every time a particular leitmotif played. The film is about a friendship that trancends age because of their love for film but also about the death of common experiences (i.e. film). Seeing the cinema in the film blow up at the end (because of its lack of patrons) while sitting in the skeleton of The Projector and hearing sobs all around me was deeply grounding. Project Hail Mary was the film that got me back into watching films, and Cinema Paradiso was the one that will encourage me to catch them in theatres. This documentary details the 1975 Icelandic women's strike and despite only having a runtime of 70 minutes, its impact runs far beyond that. On 24 October 1975, 90% of women took a day off to remind men of their importance and now Iceland is known to be one of their most gender-equal countries in the world! Each time I watch a documentary, I deepen my understanding of how its form can really be anything. I loved seeing the landscape of Iceland interspersed throughout the film, and the animations made the experience much more immersive. This documentary is firm reminder that change can happen when you have enough people that believe in a cause. With solidarity, anything can happen :)
Did not get much reading done this month unfortunately. But it’s okay, there’s always next month! The book also covered a lot on indigenous culture so I’d like to read Braiding Sweetgrass next.picked this up because of this post-it on the cover! zines from IG account: de_ziners Been trying to expose myself to more zines for Inspiration, so I’ve been reading one every day from this account that posts daily. I like that I don’t have to rely on American cultural references like other crosswords and I learn more about Singapore’s history. My VR-Man & PUB deep-dive occured because of this. Minute Cryptic Daily cryptic crossword game but there’s only one question. The tutorial courses are really useful. Sometimes if I want an extra challenge I play the Guardian’s ‘Quick Cryptic’. I do find the Guardian’s clues easier but they are more time consuming because its an entire crossword. Also the Britishisms get to me sometimes. Daily trivia game where you name things in a category. The more obscure your answer, the more points you get. I’m really bad at this, still fun though! On Noticing & Photography and murals (find some writings about this, they probably exist)i can see myself getting back into photography because i like noticing things Been obsessed with common experiences which are getting rarer nowadays on small beauties: when you take out your phone to take a picture of the sunset and you see someone else do the same thing, you are sharing this moment
everything is a win when the goal is to experience
