URBAN E X C H A N G E HUB. 08 Feeding the city: The Architecture of Street Vendors Transforming Informality into Inclusive Urban Infrastructure 01

09 Ground Reality Design Initiative Spaces Street food and vegetable vendors form one of the largest informal employment sectors in India, supporting migrant laborers and ensuring affordable food access to urban populations. Despite their economic and social significance, they operate within unplanned and infrastructure-deficient environments characterized by poor sanitation, lack of storage, circulation conflicts, and constant vulnerability to eviction. Frequently perceived as encroachments rather than essential contributors to the city, these vendors remain spatially and socially marginalized within formal urban systems. There is a growing need to reimagine how such informal economies can be integrated into structured, hygienic, and inclusive urban infrastructure. The project proposes a landscape-led civic infrastructure that integrates street vendors, public transit, and open spaces into a cohesive public realm. By strengthening the relationship between mobility, informal livelihoods, ecology, and community life, it redefines public infrastructure as an inclusive, flexible, and people-centric urban environment that supports everyday social and economic activities while enhancing urban connectivity and resilience. • Organized food vending stalls • Vegetable market zone • Waste segregation and management area • Service and loading zone • Food Heritage Museum • Metro Station • Open Air Theatre (OAT) • Parking Areas • Redevelopment of the park Thesis Seminar. Rooted in Heritage Massing Permeability Carving Reinterpretation Adaptive Public Realm Temple Street Urbanism Thiruveedhi Arangam is a contemporary Temple Urban Cultural Precinct inspired by the spa- tial character of Madurai’s historic thousand-pillared mandapams and temple bazaars. The proposal transforms an underutilized commercial complex into a vibrant public market- place integrating commerce, culture, and community. The repetitive column grid reinter- prets the experience of ancient mandapam street vending beneath shaded pillared halls. The architectural form transforms from a solid urban block into an open civic environment that inte- grates courtyards, public movement, and mandapam-inspired spatial experiences rooted in Madu- rai’s temple street culture. 12 Context. Channapatna, Karnataka often referred to as the “Toy Town of India,” is famous for its handcrafted wooden and lacquer toys. These vibrant creations are sculpted from ivo- ry wood, a locally grown deciduous tree, and dyed using natural ingredients such as tur- meric and indigo. The craft was introduced to the region under the rule of Tipu Sultan, who in- vited Persian artists to train local artisans, giving rise to an industry that still thrives today. 40 Introduction. A village submerged under Lake Reschensee in 1950, following the creation of a dam. Only its 14th-cen- tury bell tower remains visible, rising from the water and stands as a symbol of the village’s lost history. Reviving the village The design reimagines Curon’s lost heritage with tradi- tional Alpine forms and pyramidal structures, symboliz- ing the submerged village and preserving its memory. Inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, the layout uses the curve to guide a harmonious walkway around the bell tower, reflecting Curon’s historical and cultural journey. Glass facades reflect sunlight onto the bell tower, honoring its resil- ience and creating a dynamic interplay of light as a tribute to its history. Fibonacci curve Light reflection 50 Introduction. Design Competition|3rd Prize Globally| Førde 62 EŞIK. Threshold More than just a structure, Eşik is a place of gathering, learning, and ex- change—a flexible space for workshops, exhibitions, discussions, and quiet contemplation. Its design not only respects tradition but also re- interprets it, creating a new dialogue between past and present. Antalya Bilim University, Turkey 2025 05

63 Set within the landscape of Antalya Bilim University, Defined by two parallel stone walls of varying heights, the structure plays with asymmetry to create a sense of movement. A diagonal ridge beam spans across, shaping a roof that bends in two directions, sub- tly altering perspectives as one moves through the space. The pavilion remains open on two sides, allowing the surroundings to flow in, blurring the line between built and un- built. Crafted with dry-stacked stone and a carefully detailed wooden framework

Button houses are a traditional construction technique found in Turkey, characterized by timber-frame walls with stacked wooden beams interlocked using wooden pegs, or “buttons,” without nails. These structures are known for their durability, seismic resilience, and adaptability to local climatic conditions. The Traditional Button House Reinterpreting the Structure Creating a Dynamic Form Open and Connected Innovative Use of Buttons Engaging the User 64 Introduction. Concept

65 The masterplan integrates the pavilion seamlessly into its natural surroundings, enhancing accessibility and engagement. A winding pathway leads visitors through the landscape, gradually revealing the structure. The open-ended design allows for fluid movement, inviting interaction between people, nature, and architecture. Masterplan.

66 Plan & Evolution The linear floor plan of Esik is defined by two parallel stone walls, creating an open, flexible space. Its open-ended design seamlessly integrates with the landscape, encouraging movement and interaction. The continuous floor enhances accessibility, while strategic openings ensure natural flow, making the pavilion adaptable for study, workshops, exhibitions, and gatherings. 67 The structure combines timber and stone to create a lightweight, climate-responsive system. Sloped roofing and efficient beam connections ensure durability, ventilation, and effective rainwater drainage. The sections reveal the interplay between structure and experience. The sloping stone walls anchor the pavilion, supporting the diagonal ridge beam that defines the dynamic roof form. The varying heights invite interaction, encouraging users to engage with the surfaces. The open-ended design allows for nat- ural ventilation and an unobstructed connection to the landscape, while the layered wooden ele- ments—tie beams, rafters, and purlins—showcase a refined yet traditional construction approach.Scale: 1:50Structural Elevation Scale: 1:50Structural Skeletal Elevation Scale: 1:50Rafter to Ridge Beam Scale: 1:10Rafter to Side Beam Connection Scale: 1:10 Details & Section detailSSECTION AA'SECTION BB'

Sugarcrete bricks were developed using sugarcane bagasse as a bio-aggregate and lime as the binder. The bagasse was sun-dried for 12 days and oven-dried at 70°C to reduce moisture and im- prove bonding. Various mix ratios were tested, starting from 1:1:2 (bagasse:lime:water) and increas- ing lime and water content. The final stable mix was 100g bagasse, 400g lime, and 1000g water. The mixture was cast into molds (5×5×5 cm and 7.5×7.5×7.5 cm) and air-cured for 5 days, allowing car- bonation to form hardened Sugarcrete bricks. 78 Material Innovation. Sugarcrete
