WAN KHADIJA 14 June 2004 | Terengganu, Malaysia II believe architecture begins with listening. Every site holds its own stories, relationships and environmental conditions. As a designer, I am interested in understanding these layers before proposing something new. My approach is driven by curiosity and a desire to explore the relationship between the built environment, nature and the people who inhabit it. My interest in sustainable design comes from exploring how thoughtful design decisions can contribute to better environmental performance and human well-being. Through academic research and design explorations in alternative building materials, daylight analysis and lighting assessment, I have developed an appreciation for investigating how materials, spaces and environmental conditions influence the way buildings perform. As I step into the professional world, I bring an open mind, a collaborative spirit and a willingness to keep learning. I am particularly interested in developing my technical understanding of building performance and environmental design, while exploring how research and innovation can translate into practical architectural solutions. Design Projects | Problem Solving & Community Integration

| Wan Khadija 01 SEJURAI Urban River port and Fisherman Terminal Balancing River, Industry and Community Status: Academic Project | Design Studio VI Location: Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu Software: Revit, SketchUP, D5, Photoshop SEJURAI is an Industrial Fishery Hub that redefines the relationship between fisheries infrastructure and public life along Sungai Terengganu. Inspired by the balance between structured industrial operations and the fluid movement of the river, the project integrates fish landing, processing, trading, learning, and dining within a single ecosystem. Through layered programmes, activated waterfront spaces, and experiential public circulation, SEJURAI bridges the gap between river, industry, and community, creating a vibrant destination that celebrates Terengganu's fisheries heritage while supporting its future growth.

SEJURAI | Situated along Kuala Terengganu's working waterfront, the site operates as both an industrial landscape and a public interface. It supports the rhythms of artisanal fisheries while remaining deeply embedded within the daily life of the surrounding community. Understanding these overlapping conditions became essential in shaping a proposal that balances productivity, environmental responsiveness, and meaningful public engagement.

The fishery hub exists at the intersection of industry and community. This often results in fragmented circulation and limited interaction between the public and the fishing industry, creating a disconnect from the cultural practices and livelihoods that shape Kuala Terengganu's identity. These challenges present an opportunity to reimagine the fishery hub as more than an industrial facility, one that balances efficiency with environmental responsiveness, while strengthening the relationship between people, place, and industry. | Wan Khadija

| Wan Khadija 01 BUILDING ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY 02 03 04 05 06 North-South building orientation to reduce direct east-west solar exposure. Elevated and permeable building form to promote cross ventilation. Large roof overhangs and shading devices to protect glazing and circulation areas. Skylight openings to introduce controlled daylight into internal spaces. High-performance materials with low thermal transmittance (U- value). Integration of photovoltaic panels on the roof to harness solar energy.DAYLIGHT ANALYSIS7:00 AM10:00 AMAt 7:00 AM, the market receives adequate natural daylight from the eastern morning sun. Although the fish market is located on the west, the open building configuration and strategically positioned openings allow daylight to penetrate deep into the interior spaces. The illuminance levels are evenly distributed, creating a comfortable visual environment for early trading activities without relying heavily on artificial lighting.By 10:00 AM, daylight levels increase across most areas of the building. However, portions of the central market zone experience lower illuminance levels due to the depth of the floor plate and limited direct daylight penetration. While perimeter spaces remain well-lit, the daylight distribution becomes less uniform, resulting in several underlit areas within the core of the building.12:00 PM3:00 PMAt 12:00 PM, daylight distribution improves significantly as the sun reaches a higher altitude. Natural light penetrates more effectively into the building, resulting in a more balanced illuminance level throughout the market. At 3:00 PM, daylight levels decrease within the market, particularly on the western side where shading devices and roof overhangs limit excessive solar penetration. Several areas become underlit compared to earlier hours; however, this condition is considered acceptable as the primary fish market operations have largely concluded by this time.

| Wan Khadija SOLAR ANALYSISBased on the solar analysis, the roof surfaces receive the highest amount of solar radiation throughout the year due to their unobstructed exposure to sunlight. The western façade also experiences significant solar gain during the afternoon, particularly after 12:00 PM when the sun angle becomes more direct. Using Revit simulation, the roof surface cumulation insolation for +7021 sqm is 5158598 kWhAnnual PV analysis shows that if all roof surface (3717sqm) are selected, the PV energy production will be 797798 kWh/Year with energy savings at RM119670 and the payback is 14 years. If some of the roof is selected (2468sqm), the amount PV energy production will be 556489 kWh/Year with energy saving at RM88473 and the payback will be 13.2 years. This is considered the best case as it has shorter payback time despite covering only a fraction of the roofThe solar energy for the fish market shows that the interior solar gain is low, due to large overhangs and shading devices along the perimeter.01027:00 AM Market Opening Hours 10:00 AM Peak Trading PeriodThe morning sun rises from the east, casting long shadows toward the western side of the site. The fish market receives soft natural lighting, creating a comfortable environment for traders and visitors during unloading and early trading activities. As the sun rises higher, shadows become shorter and daylight penetration improves throughout the market.0312:00 PM End of Main Market Operations043:00 PM Post-Market ActivitiesAt noon, the sun reaches its highest position, resulting in minimal shadow coverage. Solar exposure is at its peak, particularly on roof surfaces. The western façade receives stronger solar exposure, increasing heat gain in the afternoon. As market activities decrease, service and processing spaces remain protected by façade shading elements. | Wan Khadija 02 TUALANG Klang Living Archive and Narrative Gallery A Living Track of Klang’s Transportation Status: Academic Project | Design Studio V Location: Klang, Selangor Software: Revit, SketchUP, D5, Photoshop The Transportation Discovery Centre unfolds as a journey, shaped by the spirit of TUALANG: to wander, to move, to discover. Anchored beside the railway, the building listens to the rhythm of passing trains and translates motion into space. An open ground plane invites the city to flow through, blurring the boundary between architecture and movement. Above, immersive galleries draw visitors into layered memories of Klang’s transportation past, where light, sound, and enclosure guide emotion. Ascending upward, spaces open and brighten, shifting from reflection to participation. Here, visitors engage with future mobility as an evolving narrative. The building becomes a living track—where movement is both the story and the experience.

More than a sequence of historical facts, the discovery hub presents these events as a continuous journey of movement, exchange, and transformation. The railway became both a physical and symbolic connector, transporting resources, people, and stories that contributed to the growth of the city. Through architecture, the project seeks to reveal these hidden relationships and invite visitors to rediscover Klang's identity through an immersive narrative experience. TUALANG |

Design Project | Immersion in Nature & Spatial Experience

| Wan Khadija 03 SELIRAT Azure Heaven - Eco Resort Interweaving Stories, Shaping Connections. Status: Academic Project | Design Studio IV Location: Pulau Tuba, Langkawi Software: SketchUP, D5, Photoshop SELIRAT explores the idea of interweaving stories, experiences, and landscapes into a cohesive yet organic whole. Inspired by the layered relationships between Pulau Tuba's forest, shoreline, and local community, the resort embraces an approach of organised chaos, allowing the site's topography and natural character to guide the placement of spaces. Rather than imposing a rigid order, each intervention responds sensitively to its surroundings, creating moments of discovery, intimacy, and connection. More than a destination for retreat, SELIRAT seeks to foster meaningful encounters between people and place. Through elevated chalet-like accommodations and a network of shared experiences woven throughout the site, the project invites visitors to slow down, engage with the island's unique identity, and rediscover a sense of belonging within nature. It is an architecture that listens to the landscape, shaping connections through the stories it holds.

The spatial planning of SELIRAT is shaped by the site's natural topography, allowing the resort to be carefully woven into the sloping landscape of Pulau Tuba. Guided by the concept of organised chaos, accommodation units and communal spaces are arranged organically to preserve existing vegetation, maximise views, and create a sense of exploration throughout the site. Inspired by treehouse living, the elevated chalet-like structures lightly touch the ground while layered roof forms and natural materials establish a harmonious relationship between architecture and nature. Rather than imposing a rigid order, the design responds sensitively to its surroundings, creating a retreat that celebrates the character of the landscape. SELIRAT |

Allowable Stress: The brick has an allowable stress value of 2.91 MPa, which is below the required minimum standard for first-class bricks (generally ≥3.5 MPa). This suggests that the brick may not be suitable for high-load-bearing construction applications but could be used for non-load-bearing structures or decorative purposes. Implication: A high water absorption rate indicates that the brick is porous and may have poor resistance to weathering. This makes it less suitable for applications exposed to moisture or heavy rainfall.

The existing artificial light fixture placement has been evaluated, and lux readings have been recorded to determine whether the provided lighting meets the required standards and is adequate in quantity. Lux measurements were taken for both the ground floor and the first floor. The collected data was utilized to calculate the number of luminaires necessary for the café. Data Analysis: Artificial Lighting (position & lux reading)

Illuminating ambiance | Design proposal Based on the calculation aforementioned above, it is stated that the existing lamps emits more lux than it was supposed to provide for the upper floor. Catering medium sized event with an area for video gaming, excessive lights can cause mental fatigue and glare to the screen for video games. Hence, a new ceiling plan for the first floor is proposed according to the recommended number of lamps needed for the space.No. of existing lamps: 15 lamps No. of lamp needed: 13 lampsLumen method calculation (first floor)New ceiling plan (first floor) Light Shelves redirect and diffuse daylight deeper into the café, reducing glare and improving daylight distribution while preventing overheating. Tinted Glass reduces excessive daylight and heat gain, offering both solar control and improved privacy, but needs to be balanced carefully to maintain visual comfort. The café's seating area experiences glare from sunlight through the glass wall. However, this issue can be addressed by implementing the following suggestions.Light ShelvesTinted glass

Architecture extends beyond drawings and buildings, it thrives through collaboration, dialogue, and shared experiences. Through exhibitions, international collaborations, industry events, and institutional engagements, these experiences have broadened my understanding of the profession and strengthened my ability to communicate, lead, and connect with diverse communities. They continue to shape the way I approach architecture, not only as a discipline of design, but as a practice rooted in people and relationships. BEYOND STUDIO PUBLIC RELATION |
