MEETING 1 ENGLISH FOR INFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY English for University Students Understanding English Sentences: Subject & Predicate Essay Practice 1: My Introduction as an IT Student 1. LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of the meeting, students should be able to: 1. Explain what an English sentence is. 2. Distinguish a sentence from a group of words. 3. Identify the Subject of a sentence. 4. Identify the Predicate of a sentence. 5. Recognize the basic English sentence pattern: Subject + Predicate 6. Write a short 5–7 sentence personal introduction. 7. Check and correct their own sentences. PART A — THEORY 2. ENGLISH FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS What is English for University Students? English is important at university because students need English to: 1. understand academic materials; 2. read textbooks and articles; 3. communicate with lecturers and classmates; 4. write assignments and reports; 5. give presentations; 6. access information from international sources.

For IT students, English is especially important because much of the terminology in: 1. programming, 2. software, 3. hardware, 4. networking, 5. cybersecurity, 6. artificial intelligence, is written and communicated in English. Key Message English is not only a subject. It is a tool for learning, communicating, and working in Information Technology. 3. WHY DO WE STUDY SENTENCES? Before students can write an essay, they need to understand how an English sentence works. Compare: I am an IT student. And IT student. The first one is a complete sentence. The second one is only a phrase. It does not communicate a complete idea. Therefore: Good writing begins with good sentences. And good sentences begin with understanding their basic structure.

4. WHAT IS A SENTENCE? Definition A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought or idea. A basic English sentence normally contains: SUBJECT + PREDICATE For example: I study Information Technology. Subject Predicate I study Information Technology. The sentence tells us: 1) Who? → I 2) What does the subject do/is? → study Information Technology. 5. SUBJECT What is a Subject? The Subject is the person, thing, place, or idea that the sentence is about. It often answers: Who? What? Examples 1) I study Information Technology. 2) My friend likes programming. 3) The computer is on the desk. 4) Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly. Identify the Subject 1. I am a university student.

2. My lecturer teaches English. 3. The computer works well. 4. Programming is interesting. 5. Our class starts at 7:30. 6. PREDICATE What is a Predicate? The Predicate tells us something about the Subject. It normally contains the verb and may include other information. Examples 1) I study Information Technology. 2) My lecturer teaches English. 3) The computer is on the desk. 4) Programming is interesting. The predicate answers questions such as: What does the subject do? Or What is the subject like? Or What happens to the subject? 7. SUBJECT + PREDICATE The easiest way for beginners to understand an English sentence is: WHO/WHAT + DOES/IS WHAT Example 1 I study Information Technology. Who? → I Do what? → study Information Technology.

Example 2 My brother works as a programmer. Who? → My brother Does what? → works as a programmer. Example 3 The computer is very expensive. What? → The computer Is what? → is very expensive. 8. BASIC SENTENCE PATTERN For this first meeting, introduce the basic pattern: S + P S = Subject P = Predicate Examples: 1) I | am a student. 2) She | likes programming. 3) The lecturer | teaches English. 4) My computer | is new. 5) We | study Information Technology. 9. IMPORTANT: PREDICATE IS MORE THAN THE VERB Students often make this mistake: Subject = I Predicate = study

But in: I study Information Technology. the complete predicate is: study Information Technology So: Subject Predicate I study Information Technology. Another example: My friend works at a software company. Subject Predicate My friend works at a software company. Teaching point The verb is the core of the predicate, but the predicate can contain additional words. 10. SENTENCE OR NOT? Ask students to decide whether each item is a complete sentence. A: I am an IT student. B: An IT student. C: My friend studies programming. D: Studies programming. Who studies programming? E: The computer is new. F: In the computer laboratory.

Your university/class 4. Your interests in IT 5. Your hobby or activity 6. Your future goal 7. Your expectation for this English course

Students do not necessarily need to use all seven points if they can produce a coherent 5–7 sentence paragraph. 20. WRITING FRAME For students who need support: My name is ____________. I am a student of ____________. I study Information Technology at ____________. I am interested in ____________. My favorite IT topic is ____________. In the future, I want to become ____________. 12 22. ANALYZING THE MODEL Take the first three sentences. Sentence 1 My name is Andi Pratama. Subject: My name Predicate: is Andi Pratama Sentence 2 I am an Information Technology student. Subject: I Predicate: am an Information Technology student Sentence 3 I am interested in programming and computer networks. Subject: I Predicate: am interested in programming and computer networks Teaching message Students can now see that an essay is built from individual sentences. Essay → Paragraph → Sentences → Subject + Predicate 23. ESSAY CORRECTION — FIRST DRAFT After students finish their 5–7 sentences, ask them to perform self-correction first. Student Checklist A. 14 Item ✓ / ✗ IT interest included Course expectation included Then students return the essay to the writer. Important teaching principle The purpose of correction is not to find who is wrong. It is to help the writer improve the sentence. 25. CORRECTION EXAMPLE Student's original sentence: my name is rudi and i am IT student. Step 1 — Capitalization My name is Rudi and I am IT student. Step 2 — Grammar We need an article: My name is Rudi and I am an IT student.
