All building or site improvements must be approved through the School Initiated Project (SIP) process. Projects located on School Board property require permitting; however, no permit fees are charged for permitting services within Brevard Public Schools. The Building Official function is provided through a contracted service. Most facility modifications require a building permit, and the majority of work must be performed by a licensed contractor. Building permits ensure that all work complies with the Florida Building Code and the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF), which are designed to maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. Licensed contractors are required to ensure that work is completed by qualified professionals who meet insurance and licensing standards by Brevard Public Schools. The building permit process includes plan review, construction material review, contractor license verification, and required inspections. Permitting Department Our Mission Volunteers must successfully pass the BPS security screening and sign the BPS hold harmless agreement. If the work requires a contractor’s license and /or a building permit, it may not be performed by volunteers unless they possess the appropriate license and obtain a building permit. Have a question about volunteers performing work on your school campus? Our mission is to provide for the life safety, health and welfare of the students, faculty, visitors, and staff of Brevard Public Schools.
