The rain fell heavily on the roof of the railway station as Rose waited on Platform Three. It was a stormy evening, and dark clouds covered the sky. She checked her phone and sighed. The last train home was supposed to arrive soon. Earlier that day, Rose had attended a scholarship interview in the city. She had worked hard for this opportunity because she wanted to continue her studies and help her family. Suddenly, an announcement echoed through the station. "Attention passengers. Train services may be delayed due to bad weather." Rose felt worried. The wind howled outside, and the rain continued to pour. She wondered if the train would be cancelled. As time passed, fewer people remained at the station. Rose sat on a bench and thought about the interview. She began to doubt herself. What if I am not good enough? she thought. Her phone vibrated. It was a message from her mother.Prose Fiction · First Draft05The Last Train Home
"Don't worry. Come home safely. We are waiting for you." The message comforted Rose. Her mother had always encouraged her to keep trying, even when things were difficult. An hour later, another announcement came. "The final train to Greenwood will arrive shortly on Platform Three." Rose quickly stood up. In the distance, she saw the train's bright headlights shining through the rain. Relief filled her heart. She boarded the train and looked out of the window as it travelled through the storm. Slowly, she began to feel calm again. When Rose finally arrived home, warm light shone from the house. Her mother opened the door and welcomed her inside. At that moment, Rose realized that hope was about believing in yourself even when life became difficult. No matter what happened with the scholarship, she knew she would continue moving forward.Prose Fiction · First Draft06The Last Train Home
Revision is where the story sharpens07Before: "The rain fell heavily on the roof of the railway station." After: "The rain drummed against the roof of the railway station." Feedback → Action: Replaced a weak verb with a stronger verb to create vivid imagery. Before: "Rose felt worried." After: "Rose tightened her grip on her backpack. What if the train never came?" Feedback → Action: Showed Rose's emotions through thoughts and actions to strengthen the poit of view. The draft was revised to create stronger imagery and a clearer point of view. For example, "The rain fell heavily on the roof of the railway station" became "The rain drummed against the roof of the railway station" to make the setting more vivid. Likewise, "Rose felt worried" was revised to "Rose tightened her grip on her backpack. What if the train never came?" to show her emotions through actions and thoughts rather than simply telling the reader how she felt. This helped strengthen the imagery, verbs, and third-person limited perspective.
The rain drummed against the roof of the railway station like a thousand tiny fingers tapping on a giant drum. Outside, a fierce storm swept across the city, bending trees and sending sheets of rain across the empty streets. Flashes of lightning briefly lit the railway tracks before darkness swallowed them again. Rose stood on Platform Three, clutching her backpack tightly. Her shoes were damp, and a cold wind slipped through the station whenever the doors opened. She glanced at her phone. 8:15 p.m. The last train home was scheduled to arrive in fifteen minutes. Earlier that day, Rose had travelled to the city for a scholarship interview. For months, she had studied late into the night and sacrificed her weekends to prepare. The scholarship offered more than financial support. It represented a chance to build a better future for herself and her family. A sudden announcement crackled through the station speakers. "Attention passengers. Due to severe weather conditions, train services may experience delays."A murmur spread among the passengers. Rose exhaled slowly."Please don't let it be cancelled," she whispered. Outside, the storm seemed determined to challenge everyone who crossed its path.PROSE FICTION · FINALTHE LAST TRAIN HOME08
The wind howled through the station passages, as if warning travellers to turn back. Time moved painfully slowly. Thirty minutes passed. Then an hour. One by one, passengers disappeared from the platform. Some arranged rides home while others moved to the waiting area. Soon only a handful remained.Rose looked down the empty track, hoping to see the train's headlights. Nothing. Her phone vibrated. It was a message from her mother. "Are you alright, Rose?" "The train is delayed, but I'm okay," she replied. A few moments later another message appeared. "Don't worry. We'll wait for you. Come home safely." Rose smiled. Her mother's words wrapped around her like a warm blanket on a cold night. As she waited, memories of the interview replayed in her mind. Every question, every answer, every nervous pause returned with surprising clarity.Maybe she had spoken too quickly. Maybe she had forgotten an important point. Maybe someone else deserved the scholarship more than she did. Doubt crept into her thoughts like a shadow stretching across the floor. Rose lowered her head.PROSE FICTION · FINALTHE LAST TRAIN HOME09
Then she remembered waking up before sunrise to study. She remembered helping her mother manage household responsibilities while completing school assignments. She remembered every obstacle she had faced and overcome. "No," she whispered firmly. She would not allow fear to erase her hard work. The scholarship was important, but it did not define her value.A sudden crack of thunder shook the station.Immediately afterward, another announcement echoed overhead. "Attention passengers. The final train to Greenwood will arrive shortly on Platform Three."Rose's eyes widened.Several passengers stood and gathered near the platform edge.Far down the railway line, a small light appeared through the curtain of rain. The train.Relief surged through Rose's body.As it approached, its bright headlights cut through the darkness like a beacon guiding lost travellers home. When the train finally stopped, Rose stepped inside and settled into a seat near the window. The journey was slow, but she did not mind.PROSE FICTION · FINALTHE LAST TRAIN HOME10
Rain slid down the glass in silver streams while distant lights blurred into colourful shapes. For the first time all evening, Rose felt calm. The storm outside gradually weakened. An hour later, the train reached her hometown.Rose hurried through the damp streets toward home. When she turned the final corner, she saw the warm glow of light shining from her house. The sight filled her heart with comfort. She opened the front door and was welcomed by the familiar smell of soup and the gentle warmth of home. Her mother greeted her with a smile."Welcome home."Rose smiled back.At that moment, she realized something important.Hope was not the certainty that everything would succeed. Hope was the courage to keep moving forward when the outcome remained unknown. She still did not know whether she would receive the scholarship. But as she sat safely at home, she understood that resilience meant continuing the journey despite fear, uncertainty, and storms along the way.Just like the last train that emerged from the darkness, hope would always guide her forward.PROSE FICTION · FINALTHE LAST TRAIN HOME11

Prose Non-Fiction · First Draft13A RAINY DAYLast school holiday, I visited George Town, Penang with my family. Although we had planned to spend the day exploring the town, the weather was not on our side. Dark clouds filled the sky, and rain began to fall shortly after we arrived. At first, I felt disappointed because many of the streets were wet and crowded with people carrying umbrellas. However, we decided to continue our journey. As we walked through the town, I admired the colourful street art and old heritage buildings. The rain made the streets look different, giving them a calm and unique atmosphere. Later, we stopped at a local food stall and enjoyed a warm bowl of Penang laksa. The hot meal was especially comforting on a rainy afternoon. While eating, I watched raindrops fall onto the pavement and listened to the sounds of the busy town around me. By the evening, the rain had become lighter. Before leaving, I took one last look at the streets and buildings that had made the trip memorable. Although the weather was unexpected, it did not ruin the experience. This trip taught me that not everything goes according to plan. Sometimes, unexpected situations can create the best memories and help us appreciate a place from a different perspective
Revision with purpose and focus14Feedback: The first draft described the trip clearly, but it focused more on the rain than on the purpose of appreciating George Town's heritage and unique atmosphere. The details were also quite general. Before: "The rain made the streets look different." After: "The rain gave the heritage streets a calm and unique atmosphere, highlighting the beauty of George Town's colourful murals and historic buildings." Action: I added specific details about the heritage streets, street art, and architecture to better engage readers and reinforce the travelogue's purpose. The focus was shifted from disappointment about the weather to appreciation of the experience. Result: The revised version creates a stronger sense of place and more effectively conveys the message that unexpected situations can lead to memorable travel experiences. In the final version, I also further expanded the descriptions of George Town's heritage sites, local food, and atmosphere to create a richer travel experience and to better achieve the purpose of the travelogue.
Prose Non-Fiction · Final15[A Rainy Day in George Town]Last school holiday, I visited George Town, Penang, with my family. We were excited to spend the day exploring the town's famous street art, heritage buildings, and local food. Before the trip, I had seen many photographs of George Town online and had heard people describe it as one of the most interesting places in Malaysia. I imagined walking along colourful streets under a bright blue sky while taking photographs of the famous murals. However, shortly after we arrived, dark clouds gathered overhead and heavy rain began to fall.At first, I felt disappointed because the weather affected our plans. The streets quickly became crowded with people carrying umbrellas, and the sound of rain echoed between the old buildings. Water collected along the sidewalks, making it difficult to walk comfortably. For a moment, I wondered whether the trip would be enjoyable at all. After all, how could we properly explore the town while trying to avoid the rain? Despite the weather, my family decided to continue our journey. As we walked through the historic streets, I began to notice details that I might have missed on a sunny day. The colourful murals stood out against the grey sky, making the artwork appear even more vibrant. Some paintings covered entire walls, while others were cleverly integrated into the surrounding environment. Visitors stopped to take photographs despite the rain, showing just how popular these artworks were. As we continued walking, I admired the unique architecture of the heritage buildings. Many of the structures reflected a blend of cultural influences that have shaped George Town throughout its history. The old shophouses featured decorative windows, wooden doors, and colourful facades that revealed the town's rich heritage. Rainwater glistened on the streets and reflected the buildings like mirrors, creating beautiful scenes that seemed almost artistic. Instead of rushing from one location to another, I found myself slowing down and appreciating the details around me.
Prose Non-Fiction · Final16[A Rainy Day in George Town]The rain also changed the atmosphere of the town. Rather than being noisy and crowded, many areas felt calm and peaceful. The sound of raindrops falling onto rooftops blended with the distant sounds of traffic and conversation. As I walked beneath my umbrella, I felt more connected to the surroundings. It was as though the rain encouraged visitors to pause and observe the beauty of George Town more carefully. After exploring for several hours, we stopped at a local food stall for lunch. The smell of freshly prepared food filled the air and immediately made us feel welcome. I ordered a warm bowl of Penang laksa, one of the state's most famous dishes. The hot and flavourful soup was especially comforting on a rainy afternoon. While enjoying the meal, I watched people hurrying past the stall while trying to avoid puddles. Others simply accepted the weather and continued their activities without complaint. Observing these small moments added to my appreciation of the experience. Later in the afternoon, the rain gradually became lighter. The dark clouds began to drift away, allowing patches of sunlight to appear. The wet streets shimmered beneath the light, creating a beautiful contrast between the old buildings and the bright sky. More visitors returned to the streets, and the town once again became lively and energetic. Before leaving George Town, I took one last look at the heritage streets around me. What had initially seemed like a disappointing day had become one of the most memorable travel experiences I had ever had. The rain transformed the atmosphere of the town and allowed me to appreciate its beauty from a different perspective. Instead of focusing on what the weather prevented me from doing, I learned to appreciate the unexpected experiences it created. This trip taught me an important lesson. Not everything in life goes according to plan, but unexpected situations do not always ruin an experience. Sometimes they provide opportunities to discover something new and meaningful. The rainy day in George Town reminded me that positive memories are often created when we learn to adapt, stay open-minded, and appreciate the beauty that exists even in imperfect circumstances.

20DRAFT 1 DRAFT 2 The storm leaves quietly, its footsteps fading into puddles of silver light. Clouds drift apart, revealing pieces of blue sky. The world begins again, and hope returns with the sunlight.Poetry · Draft and Revision The rain falls softly on the empty street. Dark clouds slowly fade, and sunlight begins to appear. The storm is over, and everything feels calm again.Revision Note • Added stronger imagery (puddles of silver light). • Replaced simple descriptions with more vivid language. • Improved rhythm and line breaks. • Strengthened symbolism of rain and hope.
FINAL POEM[After The Rain]The storm leaves quietly, without an apology, without a goodbye. Only puddles remain, holding fragments of sky in their trembling reflections. Clouds slowly part, and sunlight spills across the streets like a promise kept. The world seems different now, washed clean by the rain, softened by the passing storm. I stand still for a moment, listening to the silencewhere thunder once lived. What felt endless was only a season. What felt heavy was only a cloud passing through. Above me, the sky opens wider, bright and unafraid. And I realize that growth often arrives after the rain, hidden within the courage to keep moving forward.21
Thank you for reading.Creating this e-Portfolio taught me that strong writing develops through planning, drafting, feedback, and revision. Throughout this project, I learned that effective creative writing is not only about generating ideas but also about refining them to communicate meaning clearly and creatively. In my fiction piece, The Last Train Home, I explored the themes of hope and resilience through a character facing uncertainty. Revising the story helped me improve imagery, characterization, and emotional depth by showing feelings through actions and descriptions rather than simply stating them. In my non-fiction travelogue, A Rainy Day in George Town, I learned how personal experiences can be transformed into meaningful narratives through reflection and descriptive writing. Adapting the travelogue into a social media post also helped me understand how audience and digital platforms influence writing choices. My poem, After the Rain, allowed me to use symbolism and imagery to express personal growth and hope. Through revision, I learned how careful word choice and structure can strengthen the impact of a poem.Overall, this portfolio reflects my growth as a writer, a TESL student, and a future educator. It has strengthened my creativity, communication skills, and appreciation for the writing process.Reflection22
