About Lato Lato means “Summer” in Polish, and it is a sans serif typeface family started in the summer of 2010 by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic. Originally conceived as part of a corporate identity for a large client, the family became available for a public release when they decided to go in different stylistic direction. Lato according to its meaning “Summer”, reflecting its warm and friendly nature. It is well-balanced between classic and modern, giving it versatility for both body text and headings. Lato is warm, stable, and professional, with a slight twist of friendliness. It blends traditional letterform proportions with modern aesthetics, making it versatile for many uses, from body text to logos and headings. Lato italic also adds to the quirk of this font family. Łukasz tried to carefully balance some potentially conflicting priorities in the design; to create a typeface that seems “transparent” when used in body text but also displays original traits in larger size use. Classical proportions, particularly in the uppercase, give the letterforms familiar harmony and elegance, and combine with a sleek treatement that feels contemporary without being trendy. Semi rounded details feel warm, while the underlying structure provides stability and seriousness. Lato in details are Warm and Friendly, Lato’s semi rounded letters give it a warm, humanistic touch while maintaining professionalism. Balanced Design, Lato’s slightly round stroke caps balance seriousness and playfulness, making it suitable for serious or friendly branding. Versatile Weights, with multiple weights and Łukasz Dziedzic styles, Lato works well in different design contexts, from headers to body text. Lato’s approachable, professional tone suits friendly and transparent branding. “Serious but friendly, with the feeling of the Summer,” said Łukasz Dziedzic. Lato History 9

About Aleo Aleo is a contemporary typeface designed by Alessio Laiso as the slab serif companion to the Lato font by Łukasz Dziedzic. Aleo has semi rounded details and a sleek structure, giving it a strong personality while still keeping readability. Aleo is a contemporary slab serif font with a humanist touch. Introduced alongside its sans-serif sibling Lato. Originally released in 2013, it has developed into a versatile typeface with a distinctive personality and strong readability. A major update in June 2023, marking its 10 year anniversary, expanded the family from 6 to 18 styles and introduced variable font versions. This update also refined the design and spacing, while extending language support to include Vietnamese and Pan African Latin scripts, making Aleo more adaptable across different contexts. Aleo retains and evolves the semi-rounded details of Lato, giving it a unique character, especially at larger sizes, while maintaining high legibility. With its low contrast and open counterforms, it remains easy to read in various applications. The typeface also includes true italics, ligatures, and supports over 130 languages. Following its public release, several companies and design agencies requested custom versions tailored to their needs, including the food delivery company Just Eat. The Aleo font family is released under the SIL Open Font License, making it free for both personal and commercial use. Alessio Laiso There is something unique about type design: a typeface is a fully accomplished work of design, but unlike most forms design, a typeface is something that you make, have full ownership on, but that then others take and use to make countless new pieces of design. It becomes a tool, a work of design that generates other design and transports new meanings. Aleo not only made me grow as a designer: it’s been been a great success. History Aleo 19

The main difference lies in the addition of serifs, which appear in both semi and full forms, and Aleo is slightly wider compared to Lato. The serifs in Aleo follow a curved structure with pointed ends, keeping them visually consistent with Lato’s basic form. Overall, Aleo can be considered a serif version of Lato, with slight differences in certain letters such as “b” and “q”, which have sharper terminals, unlike the letter “d”, which remains more standard in form. This can be seen on the Reality House website (Fig. 1.1–1.3), where Aleo is used for subheadings because its serif form is well suited for that role. However, some websites also use Aleo for body copy, such as the Half Hitch website (Fig. 2.1). On the same website (Fig. 2.2), Aleo is used in both subheadings and body text. On that website, it shows that Aleo can be used for both purposes. Fig. 2.1. Source: Half Hitch website Aleo Application Usage 25
