Our Neighborhood Farm

Our class is going on a field trip to a farm. It takes fifteen minutes to walk to the farm. We will hold hands with a partner as we walk. 1

We cross the street carefully and stay in a straight line. We are almost to the farm. 2

We made it to our neighborhood farm! There are lots of interesting things to look at. 3

Farmer Rick tells us about the plants and animals that live here. Then we get to look around the farm. 4

First, we go on a walk and learn about all the fruits and vegetables that grow on the farm. There are tomatoes, beans, strawberries, blueberries, and more. 5

We get to pick green beans, lettuce and tomatoes. 6

This tomato is ripe and ready to eat. It is so juicy and good! 7

Next, we visit the chickens. These chickens are all hens. They lay eggs almost every day. Farmer Rick opens the nest box so we can see where the hens lay their eggs. 8

There are also baby chicks at our farm. We get to pet the chicks and feed them lettuce. There is a baby duckling who lives with the chicks. 9

Our last stop is to see the worms. We even get to touch them! These worms have an important job on the farm. They help make good dirt that we use to grow strong and healthy plants. 10

We learned so much from our visit to the farm and we had lots of fun! 11

It is time to walk back to school now. We will visit our neighborhood farm again another day. 1

The Mustard Seed Books project uses an open-source, Wikipedia-type strategy, leveraging public expertise to create and refine a set of high-quality books that support early reading development. All of the books and pictures are covered by the Creative Commons License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ ) and are free to print, distribute, and modify for personal or educational use. The books are available at www.mustardseedbooks.org. New titles appear on a regular basis. There is a blog post on the website so that we can receive and discuss feedback on the books. These books have been revised a number of times, but we’d love to keep improving them. Any feedback is welcome. We also welcome photos or ideas for new books. Photos for these books come primarily from Flickr (www.flickr.com) and the Morgue File (www.morguefile.com). Both sites are great resources for high-quality publicly accessible photos and for aspiring photographers looking to share their work. Mustard Seed Books - 2011 www.mustardseedbooks.org These books are covered by the Creative Commons License (by-nc-sa Our aim with this series of books is to weave together two significant goals in the design of early reading materials—that the books are both instructional and engaging. Books designed to develop reading skills often end up feeling like work to read, while books designed to be interesting are often too difficult for beginning readers. These books for beginning readers support phonics-based classroom instruction by including a high concentration of phonetically regular words, as well as the most commonly used sight words. However, the books are written using pictures and stories that make sense, with simple language structures supporting independent reading and language development. Our intent is to produce books that kids want to read, think about, talk about and read again.
