Message from the Maestro Welcome! It’s wonderful to have you with us this afternoon as we celebrate the USA’s 250th Birthday! We are especially happy to welcome the talented singers of the ACTS Performing Arts Center to the stage todayt. The combination of orchestra and voices brings a wonderful energy to these familiar and inspiring works, and we’re excited to share this musical celebration with you. Permit me to offer a special thanks to my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Allan Mosher, who is our Master of Ceremonies. There is something special about a patriotic concert. The music is familiar, the melodies can bring back memories, and hearing these pieces together reminds us of the people, places, and experiences that make our country and our communities so meaningful. This afternoon also marks the beginning of the GSO’s 98th season. Nearly a century of music-making is something worth celebrating—and it has only been possible because of the musicians, singers, volunteers, supporters, the wonderful GSO Board of Directors, and you, our audience who have made the GSO a part of this community for so many years. Sit back, relax, sing along if you know the words, tap your toes, and maybe even get a little misty-eyed. Most of all, we hope the music reminds you of the things that bring us together and gives us a chance to celebrate our country, our community, and the joy of making music together. On a personal note, this is my 25th season as conductor/music director of the GSO, which makes tonight especially meaningful to me. It continues to be an honor and privilege to be a part of the GSO family. Thank you for being here and for supporting the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. Please don’t forget to put our upcoming concerts on your calendars! We have lots more wonderful music ahead during our 98th season, and we hope to see you back in the concert hall soon. Holiday Magic at the Symphony: December 12 at 3 p.m. Heroes, Villains, Sorcerers, Wizards and Aliens: February 13 at 3 p.m. Dance, Passion and Triumph: April 17 at 3 p.m. Enjoy the concert! Michael Gelfand Conductor/Music Director Greenville Symphony Orchestra Greenville Symphony Orchestra conductor and music director Michael Gelfand has built a distinguished career as both a conductor and cellist, bridging performance, leadership, and music education across several decades. Educated at Indiana University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, he spent nearly forty years as a Professor of Music at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, where he was ultimately named Profes- sor Emeritus. Alongside his academic tenure, Gelfand established himself as a vibrant music director, leading the Greenville Symphony Orchestra since 2002 and previously heading the Ashtabula Area Orchestra. His extensive conducting repertoire spans everything from symphonic and choral masterpieces to full-scale ballet, opera, and musical theater productions across the country and abroad. As an internationally accomplished cellist, Gelfand has studied under legendary masters such as Janos Starker and Fritz Magg, taking his artistry to stages throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Over the years, he has served as Principal Cellist for the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, the Warren Philharmonic, Opera Western Re- serve, and the Cleveland Pops. His performance career includes appearances with elite ensembles like the Cleveland Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony, performing under the baton of iconic maestros including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Lorin Maazel, as well as playing at prominent international music festivals from Tanglewood to Spoleto. Beyond his institutional appointments, Gelfand continues to maintain an active schedule of guest conducting, teach- ing masterclasses, and performing in chamber ensembles. His guest engagements range from conducting summer festivals and all-state orchestras in South Dakota and West Virginia to leading international concerts with the Sofia Sinfonette and Vidin State Philharmonic in Bulgaria. Recognized with numerous honors—including fellowships to Tanglewood and state arts grants—he resides in Boardman, Ohio, with his wife, Amy, in a family of fellow artists. Outside the concert hall, Gelfand enjoys traveling, staying active through biking and swimming, and unwinding with sci-fi and legal thrillers.

ALAN J. ANDERSON CHRISTINA RUSSO THOMAS PERMAN DR. ALLAN R. MOSHER ALAN J. ANDERSON has performed many times with the Greenville Symphony, both as a singer and a narrator. He follows in the steps of his grandfather John W. Anderson, who played in the brass section during the earliest day of the Symphony. Alan’s first appearance as a soloist with the Symphony was nearly 30 years ago, in another joint project with the Greenville Area Community Theatre, when he performed "Ol' Man River". Alan is active in the Greenville Area Community Theatre, ACTS, and the Shenango Valley Chorale, as well as many other local community theaters. Alan is the Senior Estimator for Maker Construction Corporation in Grove City. Alan lives in Greenville. ACTS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER ACTS Performing Arts Center was established in February of 2011, (then, Area Community Theater of Sharpsville) taking center stage at the Pierce Opera House located in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania. The modest start began with a straight play followed by a musical, which consisted of a single keyboard and very gifted actors excited to share their talents on stage. ACTS continued to perform in Sharpsville until 2019, when the performing arts group moved to its current home located at 40 South Irvine Street (formerly known as Sacred Heart Church) in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Reborn within historic walls, ACTS unveiled a new brand and unleashed a new chapter: ACTS Performing Arts Center. Having produced nearly 100 performances, ACTS is proud to continue to bring quality entertainment to the valley by tapping the resources of all age groups and encouraging the pursuit of artistic talent. THOMAS PERMAN is President and Co Founder of ACTS and has particapated in several ACTS mainstage shows as well as other local Community Theaters. Accolade's are Pirates of Penzance (Pirate King), Man Of La Mancha (Padre), Les Miserable (Javert), Oklahoma! (Curly), Carousel (Billy Bigelow), Guys & Dolls (Sky Masterson) and Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd). He has also had supporting roles in several operas with Valley Lyric Opera in Greenville, PA. DR. ALLAN R. MOSHER (Narration) retired from Youngstown State University five years ago where he was a Professor of Voice at the Dana School of Music for twenty-nine years. He holds four earned degrees (the first in Theater Arts and the rest in Music), and has performed opera, oratorio and art songs (he recently performed Schubert's song cycle "Winterreise" at the Holy Trinity Lutheran church in Greenville for their artist series), plus directing many operatic productions. He enjoys memorizing books of the Bible and presenting them in dramatic fashion (BiblicalRecitations.com). CHRISTINA RUSSO is honored to be part of this performance celebrating our nation. She would like to thank her friends and family for their constant love and support. More importantly, Christina's thankful to God because without her faith, she would be lost. Christina hopes this performance will leave you grateful to be living in the land of the free and home of the brave. God bless our service men and women. Happy 250th America!
