PREFACE Settlements are rarely designed; they are lived into existence. They evolve quietly through time, shaped by the slope of the terrain, the movement of the sun, local materials, and the unwritten rituals of everyday life. This photobook is an architectural record and an experiential reflection on the spatial landscape of the settlement of Narayanapura, Karnataka What began as an academic exercise in measured documentation quickly became an immersion into the rhythm of the site. Beyond the structural grids, rooflines, and street edges lies a nuanced spatial language. This volume prioritizes the people of the settlement as the foreground and the architecture as the background that evolves through time. Through a combination of analytical drawings, direct field sketches, and observational photography, this volume attempts to capture both the tangible geometry and the intangible atmosphere of Narayanapura. It stands as a document of vernacular resilience, documenting not merely how buildings are constructed, but how spaces hold memory, community, and continuous adaptation.
Perched atop the rocky hills of Mandya, Melukote is more than a town carved from stone and steeped in antiquity, it is a living tapestry wo- ven around a single, pulse quickening heart. At its highest point, the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple stands as a timeless anchor. Its sun-bleached gopurams and carved granite pillars do not merely overlook the landscape; they draw every path, every story, and every life upward toward them. From the rhythmic echo of morning bells to the golden glow of twilight lamps reflecting off the sacred Kalyani tank, the temple dictates the daily rhythm of this quiet sanctuary. For centuries, this sanctuary has been the thread that binds the peo- ple of Melukote to one another. Generational weavers, temple priests, artisans, and everyday villagers share a sacred rhythm dictated by its festivals and daily rituals. It is in the gathering on the stone steps, the shared quiet of early prayers, and the collective celebration during the grand Vairamudi festival that individual lives merge into a unified community. Here, the temple is not just a monument of faith; but rather the gathering place, the memory keeper, and the quiet witness to a town bound together by heritage and devotion

In this sun bleached village , the line between wild sanctuary and human settle- ment has long been drawn in porous, breathing stone. Here, history was not built to exclude the earth, but to host its restless inhabi- tants, timbered farmsteads emerged as shared stages where the lowing of cattle and the shadow of prowling fauna wove directly into the hearth’s daily rhythm. As time pressed forward and modern masonry claimed the horizon, this spatial choreography did not shatter but rather it adapted. Stone threshold by agricultural corridor, the town’s evolving architecture re- mains a drama of quiet negotiation, where humans and animals continuously redraw their boundaries to share a singular, living stage
