Kinesics is the interpretation of nonverbal behavior pertaining to the movement of any part of the body or the entire body, including facial expressions and gestures. The equivalent term in popular culture is body language, which Ray Birdwhistell coined in 1950 and is regarded as the founder of this field of study. However, it is neither used nor preferred because what can be expressed with the body does not fit the linguist's definition of language.
Paralanguage, sometimes referred to as vocalics, is a part of meta- communication that uses strategies like prosody, pitch, volume, intonation, etc. to alter meaning, provide nuanced meaning, or express emotion. Consciously or unconsciously, paralanguage can be expressed. The use of nonverbal clues to improve verbal communication is known as "vocalics." Tonality, pitch, loudness, accentuation or stress on various words, and pronunciation are all included in this.
Artifacts in nonverbal communication refer to the tangible and intangible objects that convey messages beyond spoken words. They can include clothing, accessories, symbols, and even the physical environment in which we live. Artifacts play a crucial role in shaping our perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors, and understanding their significance is essential for effective communication.
The environment plays a significant role in nonverbal communication, influencing how messages are perceived and interpreted. Factors such as proxemics (the study of personal space) and artifacts (objects in the environment) can affect nonverbal behaviors and the overall communication process.
Chronemics is a subfield of nonverbal communication that examines how time communicates meaning in social interactions. It explores how individuals and cultures use time to express respect, urgency, status, and relational priorities. Chronemics is the study of how people perceive, structure, and use time as a form of nonverbal communication, including behaviors such as punctuality, waiting, pacing, and time orientation.
Appearance is a key aspect of nonverbal communication, which is the process of conveying information without words through visual, auditory, and behavioral cues. Physical appearance communicates personality, social status, confidence, and intentions even before verbal interaction begins. First impressions are often formed within seconds, and appearance can significantly shape these judgments, influencing relationships, professional opportunities, and social interactions
Haptics refers to the exchange of information through physical touch, making it a core component of nonverbal communication alongside facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. The term originates from the Greek word haptikos, meaning “touch”. Touch communicates meaning both consciously and unconsciously, allowing people to express emotions such as empathy, trust, affection, or authority more effectively than words alone
Proxemics, a term coined by anthropologist Edward T. Hall in 1966, refers to the spatial dimension of nonverbal behavior and the unspoken rules governing how close or far people stand from one another during interactions. It is a key aspect of nonverbal communication because the distance between individuals can convey intimacy, authority, trust, or discomfort without any spoken words
