Mabiang Seni Art ResidencyMabiang Seni is a process-based art residency located just twenty minutes from central Ubud, currently offering eight rooms with plans to launch an independent contemporary art gallery. Rooted in the Balinese word “biang,” meaning mother and symbolizing origins or roots, the residency reflects its mission to provide a nurturing, deeply rooted environment for artists to explore and develop their creative visions. Located near the sacred water purification temple Goa Garba— whose name also relates to the Balinese word for “womb”—Mabiang Seni fosters artistic growth through dedicated space, practice, and constructive dialogue among artists. Looking ahead, it aims to contribute to Bali’s art ecosystem by supporting local and international artists, writers, curators, and creatives while building connections with museums, galleries, art spaces, and cultural institutions across the region.

Working in tempera, oil and watercolour, his practice focuses primarily on painting, concerned with still life and landscape. A crab's skeleton, like a seashell, is a reminiscence of existence: a carapace that once enclosed a living body and now remains open and hollow, given over to the gaze. A mountain veiled in mist is caught in a similar uncertainty — massive yet half- erased, appearing and withdrawing at once. I am interested in this ambiguity, in images that refuse to fully resolve, where what we see remains suspended between what is there and what is already slipping away.”

Cees van DijkMABIANG SENIART RESIDENCY, BALI Cees van Dijk is an Amsterdam-based Dutch painter whose work is driven by movement, material and instinct. His practice centres on a direct, physical approach to oil paint. Working primarily on large linen canvases, Van Dijk builds dense surfaces through sweeping gestures, splashes, dragged colour and thick impasto. His works are often created in series linked to a particular place, period or material history, including paintings made in Bali and works created on canvases and frames carrying traces of previous lives. The result is tactile abstraction in which energy, interruption and renewal remain visible. 1993 | Amsterdam “My work begins with movement rather than a finished image. I use oil paint as a physical material, pushing, dragging, pouring and layering it until the surface starts to resist me. I am interested in the tension between control and accident, and in allowing a work to retain the evidence of its making. Places, transitions and existing materials often provide the starting point, but each painting develops through action. The result is not intended as a fixed story, but as a record of momentum, friction and change.” "I paint until control and accident become impossible to separate." —Cees

For Day, oil painting is a visceral exercise in presence—a move away from the screen toward a more fragile, activated physical process. After years on the move, she is focused on bridging the gap between childhood spontaneity and adult discipline, reclaiming the restorative vulnerability of the canvas. 1989 | Bali “My practice explores the tension between internal psychological states and the physical environment. Working primarily in oil, I embrace the medium's vulnerable qualities to translate shifting moods of solitude, melancholy, nostalgia, and comfort. Moving away from digital precision, I treat the canvas as a physical space for presence and emotional reckoning—translating the weight of lived experience into textured, tactile surfaces.”

By integrating traditional mural techniques with contemporary materiality, I treats the pictorial plane as a site where gesture and texture reveal unseen dimensions of human experience. Ataya ArtisiaAtaya Artisia (b. 1996, Moscow) is an artist based in Bali, where she has lived and worked since 2018. Her practice spans painting and mixed media. At the core of her artistic practice is an exploration of form as a manifestation of life — its emergence, growth, transformation, and interaction with its environment. Drawing on structures found in the natural world — from microscopic organisms to botanical and marine forms — she transforms them into a distinct language of abstract imagery. Working with layered acrylic combined with plaster and sand, she creates highly textured compositions in which organic structures interact with geometry, color, and rhythm. Her visual language exists at the intersection of biomorphic and geometric abstraction, creating images in which primordial structures of the natural world take on strange, almost otherworldly forms. 1996 | Bali “I work in the language of biomorphic abstraction: forms that recall the structures of cells, organisms, and living tissue without ever depicting them literally. This visual vocabulary lets my paintings inhabit the space between recognition and mystery: familiar enough to feel alive, strange enough to resist being named.— MABIANG SENIART RESIDENCY, BALI

It is infinitely fragile in each individual embodiment and remarkably tenacious as a process. Arising from blind chemistry, it behaves as though it wants something.— My work begins differently each time, sometimes with an impulse that isn’t yet understood, sometimes with an image seen in advance, sometimes with observation of the living world. But underneath is always the same movement: form being born out of the formless, matter in continuous transformation, searching for itself. Plaster and sand build up a relief in which the canvas surface begins to behave like living tissue: growing, pulsing, resisting flatness. The works do not illustrate biology, they attempt to bear witness to the same process that underlies life itself.”

Originally from Romania, he began his studies and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture from the UAUIM University of Architecture in Bucharest. He later moved to Paris, France, where he received his B.Arch. at the Ecole Speciale d'Architecture. For his postgraduate studies, he opted to relocate to London, where he completed his RIBA Part II M.Arch in experimental architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL in 2019. 1989 | Bali “My design methodology centres upon the various ways in which individuals perceive reality, interpreting visual information through the lens of their personal psychological frameworks. However, with the pervasive presence of social media, these perceptual parameters have become homogenised, resulting in a collective short- circuiting of individualised interpretation. My work consists on digitally altering three- dimensional representations of multicellular invertrebrates found in the ocean and elsewhere in our surrounding natural environments. Current study subjects include calcified corals, sea sponges, and other skeletal structures of unalived maritime fauna.
