5 Choose the right size for your space Before making any decisions regarding what product you may want, you’ll need to measure the height and diameter of the installation space. The installation area will require sufficient air space to ensure the product operates properly. This may include intake and exhaust requirements. Power Vent Power Vent water heaters use a fan or blower to expel exhaust gases horizontally through a vent pipe. This allows for more flexible installation options since the venting does not need to be vertical. Power Vents are used when your water heater is in an area with no access to a vertical vent or chimney. Direct Vent Direct Vent water heaters draw air from outside for combustion and expel exhaust gases directly outside through a vertical or horizontal pipe. They do not rely on indoor air for combustion. Power Direct Vent A combination of power vent and direct vent engineering, Power Direct Vent water heaters have one pipe that brings in combustion air from outside and a second pipe that vents the exhaust gas with the assistance of a blower.
