Initiation Sacraments These three sacraments lay the foundation of every Christian life. Baptism: Removes original sin, makes a person a child of God, and welcomes them into the Church. It uses water and the words "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Confirmation: Strengthens the baptized person with the Holy Spirit. It deepens their bond with the Church and empowers them to live out their faith publicly. The bishop or priest anoints the person with chrism oil. Eucharist: The central act of Catholic worship. Catholics receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ under the appearance of bread and wine during Mass. Healing Sacraments These two sacraments offer spiritual and physical healing. Penance (Confession): Forgives sins committed after baptism. A person confesses their sins to a priest, expresses true sorrow, and receives absolution and penance. Anointing of the Sick: Offers spiritual strength, peace, and sometimes physical healing to those who are seriously ill, aging, or facing surgery. A priest anoints the person with oil and prays over them. Service of Communion Sacraments These two sacraments are directed toward the salvation of others and build up the people of God. Holy Orders: Consecrates men as bishops, priests, or deacons. This allows them to lead the community, preach the Gospel, and celebrate the sacraments in Jesus' name. Matrimony: Unites a man and a woman in a lifelong, faithful covenant. It mirrors Christ's love for the Church and helps the couple grow in holiness and raise a family WHAT IS A SACRAMENT? In the Catholic Church, a sacrament is a visible, outward sign instituted by Jesus Christ that imparts an invisible, spiritual grace to the soul. SACRAMENTS

BAPTISIMBAPTISIM Baptism in the Catholic Church is the first sacrament of initiation and the foundation of the Christian life. FIRST SACRAMENT OF IINITIATION Meaning and Purpose Washing away sin: It removes original sin and any personal sins committed before the ceremony. Spiritual rebirth: It makes a person an adopted child of God and a member of Christ's body, the Church. Permanent mark: It leaves an indelible spiritual seal on the soul, meaning it can only be received once in a lifetime. The Rite and Symbols Water: A priest or deacon immerses the person or pours water over their head three times. Formula: The minister says, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". Chrism oil: The person is anointed with blessed scented oil to show they share in Christ's mission.

CONFIRMATIONCONFIRMATION SECOND SACRAMENT OF IINITIATION It deepens and strengthens the grace received at baptism, sealing the believer with a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Key Elements of Confirmation Spiritual Gifts: It increases the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. The Rite: The essential ceremony involves the bishop (or a delegated priest) laying hands on the candidate, praying for the Spirit, and anointing the person's forehead with Sacred Chrism (holy oil mixed with balsam). The Words: During the anointing, the minister says, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit". Name and Sponsor: Candidates choose a confirmation name (often a favourite saint) and a sponsor to guide them in their Christian journey.
