William & Polly Carswell William was born in Maxwelltown, Dumfries, Scotland in 1840. Mary (Polly) Hodgson was born in Dalston, Cumberland in 1857, and moved to Carlisle and married William, who had come from Scotland. They had six natural children; Thomas, Robert, Sarah, John, Mary Jane (1883-1927), Alexander (1889-?) and James (1892-1958). Guardians of Mary Jane’s illegitimate daughter, Isabella. Polly died in 1909, William in 1923. Tom & Maggie Carswell Thomas (Tom), eldest son of William & Mary. Born in Carlisle in 1870. Married Margaret (Maggie), born 1864. Had no natural children, but adopted one daughter, Mary Josephine, who died aged 5 years. Bob & Catherine Carswell William Robert (Bob), third eldest son of William & Mary, born Carlisle 1875. Married Catherine (Cathy) Cairns. Had no natural children. John Carswell John, second eldest son of William & Mary (b 1881, Carlisle, d 1914-18). Married Mary Catherine Daly, born 1883 in Dalston. Had three children; Anne (also Annie) in 1904, William in 1907, John in 1911 and Joseph. John was killed in World War 1 Sarah Elizabeth Carswell Sarah, born 1977 in Carlisle, died in 1896, aged 19, from consumption. The Carswells from 1895
