There are no reliable maps in ‘Lying, but only a little’. The new exhibition at INTERVAL Gallery brings together Mark Acetelli and Kristi Head, two Los Angeles-based painters whose works use the vocabulary of landscape while steadily dismantling its obligation to describe a real place. What remains is more interesting: memory without documentation, nature without geography, light detached from source, places that seem recognizable until the eye tries to locate them. The exhibition asks a simple question without making too much ceremony of it: can an image be factually false and emotionally exact? Despite their formal differences, Acetelli and Head ultimately meet at the same point. Both refuse the landscape as evidence. Both use memory without requiring accuracy. Kristi Head Kristi Head is a Los Angeles based artist whose paintings move between representation, surrealism, and abstraction. Head’s creative practice extends beyond painting to include mural work, commercial design, large-scale fabric dyeing, wearables, and photography, which often serves as a starting point for her visual research. She began her classical training at Huntington Fine Arts in New York and earned a dual BA in Fine Arts and Art History from Boston University. Mark Acetelli Mark Acetelli is a Detroit-born, Los Angeles-based painter. His mother’s painting practice introduced him to art at an early age, and his creative interests grew to include music and photography. Self-taught, Acetelli draws on Turner and Rothko, as well as the Zen idea of ma—the space between things. He approaches painting as a contemplative practice, seeking emotional clarity through the act of making.
