WORKING WITH HOSA OFFICERSWorking with HOSA student officers can be a beautiful and messy process. Most times the students are busy and new to leadership roles that require more responsibility. This is okay, meet them right where they are at. This is the time for them to make mistakes and learn from it. The goal is that by the end of their time leading, they would have found it challenging in a positive way, and grown in leadership skills like prioritization, asking for help, team work, delegating tasks, serving others and more. Below are some helpful tips to successfully work with HOSA officers: Meet with your officers at beginning of the year & have some plan set in place to check in with them regularly. Empower your officers! Normalize that making mistakes is part of the learning process, they will make tons of mistakes and that’s ok. What’s more important is how they communicate and stay resilient as they lead their school’s HOSA chapter. Role of officers in planning HOSA meetings: Planning, reaching out to guest speakers, gathering information from members on what they’d like to see, leading HOSA meetings and more. They won’t get it right the first time, advisors please support them throughout the process.

WORKING WITH HOSA OFFICERSExample Agenda for the first meeting: 1.Team building exercise/icebreaker 2.Setting personal and team goals a.Make sure everyone is clear about what their role entails and also emphasize that even though one person is president and someone else is secretary, they are all one team and no officer is above another. Power struggles can be real with students. If this applies to your students something that can help mitigate the power struggle is having blanket officer titles eg: officer 1, officer 2 … as long as each person’s role is clear 3.Set expectations a.What are the expectations around communication, conflict management, leading meetings, timeliness and more 4.Make a group chat for professional communication a.Google Spaces is an amazing tool (student MPS emails don’t have access to this but personal emails work well)

PLANNING HOSA MEETINGSHOSA Meetings Work with the HOSA officers to plan engaging meetings for members. Checklist: Make announcements about the meeting (when & where) Print out passes & other documents needed Hand out passes Have slides ready Double check with officers before meeting that they know the slides they are in charge of (if they are leading the meeting) Enjoy your meeting (sometimes they don’t always go as planned, being flexible is important) When planning meetings with Officers: Assign each person a specific task and with a timeline (WI HOSA program of work document is helpful for this) If HOSA officers are working on the slides for a meeting. Have them complete it a day or two before the scheduled meeting so the advisor can go over and suggest changes if needed.

MILWAUKEE AHEC REPORTS )FOR AMERICORPS MEMBERSThere are several reports that AmeriCorps members are required to complete. They may need assistance gathering some of the information. HOSA Activity Tracker: Keeps track of what activities take place and how much time is spent on each activity and number of students involved. HOSA Demographic & Attendance Tracking: We need to report race, ethnicity and gender. End of Year Survey: This is how we measure the impact of the program. We give this survey at the end of the school year. Annual Infographic: A visual representation of our annual achievements, completed at the end of the year using all of the above information. I recommend that AmeriCorps members keep the trackers up to date, by entering data at least monthly.
