We sure had an easy winter, (aside from a couple of days of well below zero temperatures). It’s promising that we have spring activities outdoors in April! (I actually mean it this time!) These final eight to ten weeks of the school year are absolutely wild and fast paced and we will try and keep up with all the activities that are coming up. From the fun of the Track and Field, to the sounds of Baseball and Softball, to the joy of opening up the area golf courses, we are sure to be treated to some great efforts once again to close out the school year. Our plans are to be out and about as best we can during the spring season. For many years we have put out a full schedule of what we hoped to have completed for broadcasts in the area, and this year, we are working on more of a week-to-week basis to do the best we can to get out to meaningful games and provide coverage on radio, video stream, website and with social media as well. This year we plan on producing great broadcasts and coverage for all the area spring sports activities. With the help of coaches and managers and community members across the area, we can get plenty of information, and coverage during the busy seasons. Thanks again for finding the copy of this guide in digital form on our website www.rjbroadcasting.com, and we are looking to make the copy more accessible, and also work through the rising costs of printing the guide as well. We hope you’ll continue to make good use of the product, no matter how you get your hands on it! Thank you for the positive feedback on the digital Fall and Winter guides. We know some miss the printed copy, but we know that this is the way of the future, and it’s allowing us to extend deadlines and make things even more accessible to you! Thank you again for reading, and for all who helped make the guide possible, (Special thanks for the assistance of my fellow colleagues with R&J Broadcasting Inc. and a few others who were called in for specialized assistance) and we cannot do this without including a big THANK YOU to the advertising businesses and groups. You can find us at KRJB 106.5FM, KRJM 101.5FM, KKCQ 96.7FM, KKCQ 1480AM/99.7FM, KKWQ 92.5FM, KRWB 1410AM/102.9FM, www.rjbroadcasting.com, www.yourliveevent.com and Garden Valley TV! Assistant Coaches: Pete Kappes and Bradley Kappes Number of Years Coaching: 13 years total, 2nd as head coach Last Year’s Record: Pine to Prairie Runners up Returning Starters: We have 31 athletes returning from the fall season including 6 senior athletes and 10 juniors who all have many years of experience. Players to Watch: We had 23 athletes competing at a Varsity level last spring out of 28, so have many athletes capable of earning top athlete or top male/female shooting honors for the team or placing in the conference once it is announced. Upcoming Players: Our eight junior high athletes are starting to pick up heat and shoot at a high level. Two are already shooting at a varsity level, with others gradually increasing their average and finding their pace. Several of our novice and JV shooters have a good chance of doing well at the State meet in June too. Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: We had 23 athletes competing at a Varsity level last spring out of 28. Last fall we had six new 7th graders join the team and finished with 21 out of 31 athletes competing at a Varsity level. The top gun athlete for both males and females is always a close competition. Last fall 5 athletes finished in the top 100 in the state out of a total of over 3,000 shooters. We have some new athletes who are shooting at a high level as well. Favorites in Your Section or Region: State conference placements do not come out until later in March, so we will not know who we are up against this spring until then. In the Pine to Prairie, Bagley and Fertile Beltrami are always tough competition. halstadtel.com •800-457-2125

Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: We have a very deep roster this year with at least 10 guys looking to be competitive at the varsity level. A lot of these golfers were right around 100 on 18 holes last year and we are hoping to lower those scores into the low 90’s and upper 80’s this year. This will come mostly from consistency around the greens. If we can do that, we should be able to be competitive as a team in our region and hoping to qualify for state. Favorites in Your Section or Region: We are now in Region 3 with mostly new teams this year so I’m excited to see who the top teams are, but at this point I’m not sure who it will be. Our new region consists of Carrington, Edgeley/Kulm, Ellendale, Griggs-Midkota, Kidder County, Lamoure-Litchville/ Marion, Lakota, Linton/HMB, Napoleon/G-S, New Rockford- Sheyenne, Oakes, Pingree-Buchanan, South Border, Strasburg/ Zeeland, and Valley City.

Small ball, getting girls on base, and timely hitting will be crucial offensively for our team this year. Defensively, we will need to be more consistent throwing strikes and limiting free passes. The defense will need to be fundamentally sound and make the routine plays. We are looking at some younger talent stepping into varsity roles and making an immediate impact. Our team is looking to build from the success and experience we had from the state tournament last year to boost our confidence going into the 2026 season. On the girls side, we graduated some outstanding seniors, so there are definitely some big shoes to fill. That being said, it has been exciting to see our younger athletes stepping up and our upperclassmen working hard to lead the way and help fill those gaps. The girls won the region last year, and while we know it will be a tough battle to defend that title, we believe this group has the drive and determination to compete for it again. On the boys side, we return a lot of strong talent from last season, including three athletes who were regional champions last year. That experience and success has created a lot of excitement within the team. Our sprint relays have the potential to be very competitive, and we’re looking forward to seeing our athletes continue to excel in the field events. We also have several younger boys putting in great work to strengthen our distance events, which is an area we’ve been building in recent years. After finishing third at regionals last year, the boys are hungry and motivated to climb even higher this season. Returning Starters: Colin Voightman 12th Gavin Toop 12th Kash Lorenz 11th Brody Kegley 11th Kade Johnson 9th Players to Watch: Any of these 5 players are very capable of having a big year. Colin and Kash have been big producers on our team the past 2 years, and I expect them to have another strong season. Gavin hits a long ball and if he can avoid I big number on one hole somewhere, he can play with anyone in the state. Brody duel sports with baseball, but I wouldn’t count against him. When he is getting off the box in good shape and putting well, he is tough to beat. Kade was the biggest surprise last year as an 8th grader. He was very consistent and by the end of the season, no stage seemed too big for him. He puts lots of time in on his game, and it shows. Upcoming players: We are deep in respect of number of kids who could make the final 6 spots on the team. Competition will be very high again this year. Coach’s Outlook/expectations: Last year our region sent 5 teams to state, which tells you about the talent in our region. I will argue with anyone that it is the strongest region in the state and we will have to play well to even get there. That being said, we expect our kids to work hard enough to accomplish that goal and have a strong showing at the state tournament. The region teams changed I little bit this year, but the usual powerhouses are still in this region. Oak Grove has a great team once again and Kindred is strong as usual. Hillsboro has a good team and Mayville has some very good young players that can post low scores. I feel good about the kids we have at CC and know we have the potential to have a strong team once again. It comes down to who is playing well at the end of the season. We have finished in the top 3 spots in state the last 4 years and set our goals to do the same this year. The region crossover qualifying creates some new enthusiasm this season which will be fun to watch.

They all have multiple years of experience under their belts and will be leaned on heavily this season. Upcoming Players: Sophomore OF Rowan Benoit, and Jr. P/IF Kane Oistad will look to build upon late season experience last year and be significant contributors this season. Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: We have a very senior laden group with some guys who have been playing 2-4 years of varsity level baseball. That experience and leadership is always a key factor on a successful team. We have a lot of innings on the mound to replace from graduation last year - but hope to be in a good, competitive position to make a playoff run come the end of May. Favorites in Your Section or Region: The last few years have proven that we have the best baseball in the state at the A level way up in the far northwest. Defending section and state champion Red Lake County has almost everybody back and is without a doubt not just a favorite in our section, but also the state. Sacred Heart is a perennial powerhouse and has made numerous, recent State tournament runs. Northern Freeze, Ada-Borup/West and West Marshall Fusion also stick out in the West ½ of the Section. In the east ½ there is Fosston, Win-E-Mac, and Mahnomen-Waubun who are always competitive as well. There really isn’t a game on the schedule that can be taken for granted!

With that experience back, we believe we have the pieces to compete for both a conference and section championship again, though we know both races will be very competitive. Our biggest strength will be our pitching and defense, as we return two pitchers who do an excellent job limiting baserunners along with a very solid defensive group behind them. We are also fortunate to have our catcher back for her fifth year as a starter, providing tremendous leadership and experience behind the plate. Offensively, our focus will be on developing consistency throughout the lineup while using our athleticism to create runs in a variety of ways. Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: This year’s Burro baseball team returns a good core of players that were anchors on our team the last couple of springs. Haffely, Leshuk, Dufner, Cotton, Chenault, and Miller started every game a year ago besides one and put up great numbers both at the plate and pitching/catching. We graduated a few starters from last year that will need to be filled by some players who have been working hard and waiting their turn. Riley Richter, Tyson Sundby, and Elijah Smallbeck graduated in 2025 and started all 27 of our games a season ago. Richter and Sundby both threw extended innings for us and will be big shoes to fill offensively and on the mound. Seniors Brody Dickhoff and Carson Kozojed have played summer baseball for the last 3 years but haven’t played spring until this year. Those two seniors, along with Breidenbach, Mitzel, and Hershey will look to fill in the spots left open by last years graduates. The coaches are looking forward to watching all of our players compete for chances, as we think we have a solid team that will challenge any team we face. Favorites in Your Section or Region: I think this years favorites will be H-CV and Thompson. Hatton- Northwood and MPCG will have solid teams, but I feel like our experience will put us towards the top of the Region! halstadtel.com •800-457-2125

NDHSAA has moved to a “Super Region” format for qualifying for the State Tournament. In the past, we’ve had two individual qualifiers and then one team Region to qualify. There were also standards each team could meet which would qualify them for the State Tournament. This year, two Regions will compete together for four team spots, and then the next 20 players not on those teams will qualify. So basically, you have one day when you need to play well. That puts a lot more pressure on teams and individuals. That’s something that will be interesting to see how teams respond. Notoriously, our Region has been the best, winning State tournaments year after year. I look for that to continue. Brody and Carson have the best opportunity to qualify, and we will look for them to go low at the Super Regional, so we have a chance. Ethan and Cade will have to step up. Cade came through in the clutch last spring shooting his low at the Region tournament, which got us qualified for the State Tournament. Ethan will get his first real opportunity at playing varsity golf. After those two, we are really young. Favorites in your Section or Region: 1. Oak Grove 2. Kindred 3. Central Cass 4. MPCG 5. HCV Oak Grove brings everyone back after winning a State Title last year. Kindred and Central Cass will be neck and neck for second and third, and HCV and MPCG will also be neck and neck for the fourth spot (as far as qualifying for the State Tourney). Grafton from the Region we will compete against at the Super Regional will also make a serious run at that fourth spot. We play it in Carrington, where we tend to play fairly well, so it should be fun!

He’s a hard worker and we are excited for his upcoming season. Braydon Roberts and Tyler Gronwold will also be fun to watch within our D crew. For throwers, Brody Mauch is looking strong and indicating early on that he’ll have a fun season. Our sprinters to look out for include Miles Stroh, Sawyer Hesse, and Myles Thielges. Thielges will especially be strong in the hurdles. Finally, in the field events, Brock Johnson is set to have a big pole vault year along with Javen Johnson and Alex Iverson. If Brooks Bakko can heal up, he is a phenomenal athlete that is always a great pleasure to watch at whatever he does. For girls: Averi Beuclair will be a strong thrower. Liza Trenbeath will be fun to watch in the javelin and is coming off a 3rd place state finish. Jasmin Beuclair showcases a lot of versatility and we are excited for her upcoming season. In the sprints, Mallory Keller, Christina Kringstad, and Londyn Nelson are looking very fast early on. Mallory is also an outstanding hurdler… her, Ashley Haas, and Kaylin Goldsmith are hoping to have strong hurdling seasons. In the jumps, Taylor Sanders looks very explosive early on. We think she has some fantastic potential for the upcoming season! Upcoming Players: A few younger athletes that we are excited to see big improvement as the year progresses and make a nice impact this season are Clayton Althoff and Cam Kittelson. Clayton is a phenomenal young man, coachable, and has tremendous character. As a sophomore, he will have an impact in the sprints and in our relays. Cam Kittelson is just an 8th grader and looking very strong. He is trying a little of everything right now (PV, hurdles, jumps, and sprints). He has a bright future in track and field! Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: We are excited for the track season to be underway and expecting our kids to continue working hard, improve, and hopefully be in outstanding shape by the end of the season. Our goals are to be at our best for regionals and fight as hard as we can for both a boys and girls region championship! The SE Region is a strong region and one we love competing in… adding Valley City to the mix will only add to the strength of the region and the excitement of the SE Region meet in May.

Players to Watch: I think the players to watch are Alivia Jacobson (P). She has taken over our #1 pitcher role. Kenna Mattson (C) is our senior catcher that has a very high throw-out percentage and manages the team on the field extremely well. Flynn Mattson, our senior third baseman, has a lot of power and should have a good year in the number four slot. Upcoming Players: We have several sophomores that are coming up to the varsity level and will have a big impact on our team. Ava Poegel will be our first baseman. She has the potential of being a strong hitter for us. Molly Miletto is a sophomore that is a strong hitter and base runner. Alivia Thomasson, sophomore pitcher, will see good playing time as will Alex Mattson, freshman pitcher. It will be fun to watch these girls. Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: We have the potential to do well this year. We have a senior-lead team. We have set up a stronger schedule this year so our record may reflect that. Favorites in Your Section or Region: I would think that East Polk, BGMR and Red Lake Falls will be very tough as they always are. Our section should be fairly strong this year. It will be a very good test for us.

While those seniors played an important role in our success, their departure has created opportunities for some of our younger athletes to step into bigger roles. We have several developing competitors who have shown strong potential and the ability to make a meaningful impact this season. Their growth and willingness to compete will be key as we continue working to build the program back up. We are also fortunate to return two of the four runners from last season’s state runner-up 4x800 relay team. That experience competing at a high level provides an important foundation for the group. Their leadership, familiarity with big meets, and ability to guide some of our younger athletes will be valuable as the season progresses. We have a great nucleus of players back and some very excited younger players chomping at the bit to get in there. Our pitchers and catchers have developed very well over the past few years due to work from our outside resources. The areas of focus for us this year will be making the plays defensively that need to be made, as we had too many errors last season. Another area is putting the ball in play and to the gaps when the count is in our favor. Strikeouts were too high last year for our hitters. There are a lot of very good softball teams in the state and we hope to be playing with them by the end of the year. Cameryn Melander - Twin sister of Carsyn, was also a member of both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays Abigail Schenck - Ended last season with an injury but would have pushed for a spot on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, excited to have her back healthy Carly Rider - Returning Sprinter, part of school record 4x100 relay and top 5 on the team in long jump Annabel Steinberger - Strongest Girls Mid-Distance runner - made a strong push for our School Record in the 800M last year and nearly qualified in the 800 as well. I am hopeful for a nice spring and I am looking forward to seeing many personal records from our athletes! Favorites in Your Section or Region: Region 1 has so many strong competitors from different teams. Oftentimes if an athlete places in our region, they have a good chance of doing well in the state meet. Izzy Thompson from Central Cass will be a strong competitor in the long and triple jump. Relay teams from various schools are always competitive. COACH’S COMMENTS DARIN ELLER Boys’ Track and Field Number of Years Coaching: Entering 18th Season Last Year’s Record: Team State Runner Up Returning Starters: Owen Johnson is our top returning Trackster. He was the State Runner Up last year in the 1600 and 3200 as well as finishing 3rd in the 800. He is also an important leg in our 4x400 and 4x800 Relays. We are also returning a number of excellent mid-distance runners in the 400 and 800 in Parker Anderson and Damien Haisley. Trever Lee is our Swiss Army Knife. He is a capable sprinter, state qualifying in the 4x100 and 4x200 in past years. He also has the ability to run mid-distance, state qualifying in the 4x400 and 4x800 last season. Trever is also a strong open 400 runner and our top Boy in the Javelin. Players to Watch: Lane Lockhart was an invaluable member of our sprints and jumps department but missed the end of the season with a fractured vertebrae. We are excited to have him back at full health. Kayden Williams and Brody Vander Wal will be our leaders in the throwing department. Both of those boys will be looking to improve and move our throwing group in the right direction. Upcoming Players: We have 15 boys coming out for Track this season for the first time ever. We have had a great deal of success in the past couple of years and it has led to a lot of kids wanting to be a part of the program. We have the potential to have our largest team in school history and numbers help us find success. Coach’s Outlook/Expectations: It is impossible not to be excited about our season after how we finished last season. Yes, we did graduate a strong group of senior boys, but we also have a strong group returning and a lot of new talent to work with. The first two weeks of practice we have been able to get outside quite a bit, and when that happens the kids tend to be more prepared when meets start rolling. In all of my time here we have never had this number of kids out for Track & Field. That gives us a sense that we are building a program kids want to be a part of. We are excited for what this season is going to bring for us.
