3PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes Hello! My name is Lotte Claes, and I am a second-year Applied Architecture student. My main interest lies in renovation, as I find it fascinating how existing buildings can be given a new life while respecting their original character and introducing contemporary elements. In my designs, I find coherence very important: how spaces are used and how they respond to the way people experience them. Architecture should not only be functional, but should also create places where people feel comfortable. I am a creative person who always tries to approach things as well as possible. This perfectionist mindset can sometimes be a challenge, but it also motivates me to keep searching for better solu- tions. What interests me most is seeing how ideas come to life and discovering how there is often much more behind a construction than what you see at first glance. With every project, I want to continue growing, discovering new things, and challenging myself to become stronger both creatively and technically. Profile
4PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes BACHELOR APPLIED ARCHITECTURE the Bachelor’s degree in Applied Architecture is a three-year, practice-oriented programme that combines fundamental design skills with a strong technical knowledge of construction. Students receive extensive training in 2D and 3D design software, BIM software, and sustanable building principles. Graduates are well prepared to enter the professional field, as the theory taught throughout the programme is directly applied to realistic projects. They develop a broad range of skills, making them versatile and well suited for working in architectural practices, visualisation studios, construction companies, and engineering firms.

0 1 2 3 4 5m 10PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes SEMESTER 1 01 Location: Zeebrugge beach Used software: AutoCAD / Sketchup Academic year: 2024 - 2025 Located on the beach of Zeebrugge, this project explores the design of a temporary accommodation unit intended as a holiday retreat for tourists seeking an alternative way to experience the Belgian coast. The beach house serves as a base for exploring both the coastline and the city of Bruges, which is located nearby. The design takes into account the unique qualities of the location, such as the wide beach, the nearby polders, and the strong connection to Bruges. Important aspects such as orientation, views, natural light, privacy, and integration into the surroundings were carefully considered. The beach house was designed to enhance the experience of the location while providing visitors with a calm and comfortable place to relax after a day of activities. 18PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes SEMESTER 2 02 Location: Stalijzerstraat, Bruges Used software: Archicad / Photoshop Academic year: 2024 - 2025 The assignment involved the design of a single-family house within the TETRIS housing project on Stalijzerstraat in Bruges, located near Koningin Astridpark. The house is part of a masterplan that defines the connection between the different homes and the relationship between private and public outdoor spaces. The design focuses on functional organisation, spatial quality, building volume, and the integration of outdoor spaces. Factors such as orientation, natural light, privacy, and the relationship with the surroundings played an important role. Construction, structure, building services, and sustainability were also taken into consideration. 24PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes SEMESTER 3 03 Architectural project Execution Visualization THE GREEN ROOMS Location: Magdalenastraat 37-45 + Stationslaan 23, Bruges Used software: Archicad / Photoshop / Twinmotion Academic year: 2025 - 2026 This project focused on the design of a cohousing development with multi-family housing on a site between Magdalenastraat and Stationslaan in Bruges. The concept, “The Green Rooms,” brings together living and nature by connecting private dwellings through shared green outdoor spaces that encourage both social interaction and relaxation. The preliminary design phase explored site planning, massing, and functional organization, while taking into account the urban context, orientation, privacy, and the transition between private and public spaces. Special attention was given to the design of the communal garden as the social and spatial heart of the project. The proposal aims to create an energy-efficient and high-quality living environment where architecture and landscape are closely integrated, fostering a strong sense of community among residents.

30PORTFOLIO Lotte Claes SEMESTER 4 04 Architectural project RECONSTRUCTION WING D Location: Rijselstraat 5, Bruges Used software: Archicad / Photoshop Academic year: 2025 - 2026 The transformation of Wing D on the BST campus in Bruges investigates how adaptive reuse and sustainable construction can contribute to future residential development. The existing foundation and floor slab were retained, while the building was extended through a timber-frame rooftop addition. Within this new building volume, consisting of two storeys beneath a pitched roof, a mixed residential programme was developed, including studios, flats, apartments, and adapted living units designed for lifelong living. The design aimed to create a more human-scaled and residential character by breaking up the building volume and avoiding the appearance of a large apartment block. The intervention introduces visual connections and spatial openness, strengthening the relationship with the surrounding environment. In addition, the building was set back to create natural buffer zones and enhance privacy. Particular attention was given to the integration of the project within its existing context. A glass façade was introduced to make the circulation visible while referencing the original building. The design explores how densification and adaptive reuse, combined with lightweight and sustainable construction methods such as timber-frame construction, can contribute to the future-oriented development of the campus. - PROJECT
