iv Authors After getting through a lengthy process of writing, designing, and revising, the English for Fashion Design book can finally be used as one of the references to teach English for Specific Purposes (ESP) targeted at the vocational high school students enrolled in the Fashion and Design Department. Most of the materials in this book were designed based on the needs analysis conducted in one of the private vocational high schools in Yogyakarta. Apparently, having good knowledge and skills in fashion design was not enough to prepare the students to face the workforce. Having proficient English skills is perceived as essential to be able to compete in the industry and reach the global marketplace. Derived from the need analysis result, the English for Fashion Design book attempts to fill the void to meet the needs of equipping the students with the practical English skills to accomplish fashion design-related tasks in the future workforce. Undeniably, this electronic book is not free from limitations. Thus, any constructive feedback is welcome to improve the quality of this book. The authors would also acknowledge the support and help given by the English teacher, the head of the Fashion Design Department, and the school in which the needs analysis was conducted. The authors are also deeply indebted to the lecturers for giving some insightful suggestions and constructive feedback during the process of writing this book. Lastly, the authors hope that this book can contribute to meeting the needs and fulfilling the demands. P R E F A C E

Kebaya was used over the cloth wrap or known as Kemben. It was the start of the influence of Islamic culture. Hence, Kebaya became more covered in the chest area. Answer these following questions based on the text that you have read. Indonesia is well-known for its diverse cultural heritage one of which includes traditional fabrics. One of the traditional fabrics that is considered unique and rare is Doyo Ulap. Doyo Ulap is a typical fabric originated from East Kalimantan made by Dayak Benuaq tribe who inhabits the Eastern part of Kalimantan. Doyo Ulap is estimated to have existed in East Kalimantan before the 17th century. Ulap in the local language means cloth, and doyo is taken from the name of the plant from which it is made, namely Curliglia Latifolia. This plant is characterized as pandanus, which has strong fibres and can be found in some regions of Kalimantan, such as in the Tanjung Isuy, Jempang, and West Kutai areas. The unique patterns of Doyo Ulap have existed for centuries. The patterns mostly include flora and fauna which represent the “living habitat” surrounding the banks of the Mahakam River. However, besides naturalistic patterns, there are also patterns depicting the war between humans and dragons which are also a source of inspiration for the creators. What are the features of women’s Hanbok? Answer: What makes upper classes and worker classes Hanbok different? Answer: Answer these following questions based on the text that you have read. Hanbok is traditional clothes from Korea. Hanbok was worn for daily clothes until a century ago. During the Three Kingdoms of Korea (57BCE to 668CE), the structure of traditional Korean apparel, namely the jeogori (jacket), baji (trousers), and chima (skirt), was formed. Hanbok represents Korean culture, thus people wear it at ceremonies and on special occasions. These clothes can be categorized into everyday, ceremonial, and special dress. There is various color based on the yin-and-yang theory, these 5 elements are: white for metal, red for fire, blue for wood, black for water, and yellow for earth. Korean children usually wear Hanbok in bright colors. For middle-aged men and women wear muted colors. Meanwhile, unmarried women wear yellow jeogori and red chima, while matrons wear green and red colors. Next, women that have sons wear navy Hanbok. Not only for the martial position but colors in Hanbok also classify the social position. The upper classes wear various colors. Otherwise, the working class wears a white Hanbok. Sometimes they dressed in grey, charcoal, pale pink, or light green on special occasions. Talking about social position, Korean people can be identified by the material of their Hanbok. For example, the upper classes wear high-grade or woven ramie material in the warm months. Meanwhile, the working-class wears Hanbok from cotton materials. Beside of colours and materials, patterns also have meaning in the traditional Korean dress. Lotus flowers mean the dream of grandeur. Peony in a wedding dress means yearning for honor and fortune. Bats and pomegranates as the symbol of a longing for offspring. Next, royalty and high-ranking officials' hanboks were only allowed to feature dragons, phoenixes, cranes, and tigers. Due to the time changes, Korea’s traditional dress has also changed some aspects. Nowadays, modern designers create classic motifs by combining some patterns and materials, such as leather and lace, simple cotton, and linen. Although there are some changes in patterns and materials, people still use it in special occasions like wedding ancestral rites and dol, and Lunar New Year. Thus, Hanbok is one of the unique traditional dresses for women. Tam: Well, if I may suggest, it would be great to get a celebrity or social media influencer endorsement to promote our product. For this to be effective, let’s choose the celebrity or influencer who are popular on social media. Our focus groups showed that the target market of our products is people aged 17-40. Randy: That sounds great. The idea is that engaging young people who are active on social media to know and eventually buy our products. Susan: Right!
