what’s on the menu?

Food is one of our most important needs because it gives us the energy and nutrients we need to live a healthy life. However, many families choose fast food because it is convenient, tasty, and easy to buy. Although fast food can be enjoyed occasionally, affordable and nutritious home- cooked meals should be prioritized because they help protect family health, reduce food expenses, and encourage responsible decision- making. Choosing what truly benefits our families instead of always choosing what is convenient is a meaningful step toward a healthier life. First, choosing nutritious home-cooked meals reflects our responsibility to care for the life and health that God has given us. In Catholic teaching, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, particularly paragraph 2288, explains that life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us. This reminds us that taking care of our bodies is an important responsibility. The Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) developed Pinggang Pinoy, a guide that encourages Filipinos to eat balanced meals containing energy- giving foods, protein-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables. Affordable dishes such as monggo with malunggay, fish with vegetables, and chicken tinola can help families meet their nutritional needs. By choosing nutritious meals, we show gratitude for the gift of life and make decisions that support our well-being. Second, prioritizing home-cooked meals demonstrates love, consideration, and responsibility toward our family. Caring for family members means considering not only what we want to eat but also what will benefit everyone's health and needs. According to the DOST-FNRI, its research involving almost 8,000 Filipino adults found that four out of ten respondents ate at fast-food establishments and carinderias, particularly during lunchtime. The institute also reported an association between eating away from home and poorer diet quality. This highlights the importance of making thoughtful food choices for ourselves and the people we care about. Preparing affordable, balanced meals at home can be one way of showing concern for our family's well-being, especially when we consider the needs of children and other family members who depend on us.Scientific studies—including data from the DOST-FNRI and NIH —show that home-cooked meals provide superior nutrition, lower daily caloric intake, and reduced risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease compared to fast food, which is high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats.• Lower sodium and sugar: Fast food uses heavy salt and sugar for flavor, while home cooking lets you manage exact seasonings. • More fiber and produce: Home Cooking increases daily fruit and vegetable intake by up to two portions. • Higher diet quality: Regular home-cooked dinners produce higher Healthy Eating Index scores than frequent takeout.• Obesity prevention: Long-term tracking studies link regular fast-food and restaurant meals to rapid weight gain and high body fat. • Lower diabetes risk: The Nurses' Health Study associates frequent midday and evening home-cooked meals with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. • Protected cardiovascular health: The DOST-FNRI reports that regular outside dining among adults links to higher rates of hypertension and metabolic stress. Facts Beyond Fast Food: Choosing Health at Home
evidences1. CLE — Caring for our health as a gift from God According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), in a February 5, 2026 report by the Philippine Information Agency, the Pinggang Pinoy guide encourages Filipinos to eat balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, and protein-rich foods. This supports the idea that caring for our health requires thoughtful food choices. In Catholic teaching, our lives and physical health are gifts entrusted to us by God, so choosing nutritious food is one practical way to take responsibility for our well-being. GMRC — Showing love and responsibility toward family According to the DOST-FNRI's 2023 National Nutrition Survey, released in July 2025, the average Filipino household's food intake mainly consisted of rice (35.7%), vegetables (14.5%), and fish (10.8%). The survey also found that Filipinos across age groups were not consuming enough to meet their recommended energy intake, while average calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C intake was low across nearly all age groups. These findings highlight the importance of choosing balanced meals and considering the nutritional needs of family members. Planning and preparing nutritious food can demonstrate care, responsibility, and concern for the people we love. Department of Science and Technology Source: DOST-FNRI — 2023 Filipinos' State of Health and NutritionThird, choosing home-cooked meals is also a practical way to manage family expenses and allocate resources wisely. In economics, families must prioritize their needs because their money and resources are limited. Spending regularly on fast food can leave less money for other necessities, such as education, transportation, and household bills. The DOST-FNRI recommends planning meals ahead, choosing affordable foods that are available and in season, and using leftovers to reduce food waste. For example, instead of buying separate fast-food meals, a family can prepare a pot of monggo or tinola that serves several people. This allows families to make better use of their budgets while providing nutritious food. By choosing needs over unnecessary wants, families can make responsible spending decisions and use their limited resources to benefit everyone. Some people argue that fast food is a better option because it saves time, especially for busy parents and students. This is understandable because preparing meals requires effort and planning. However, families can make cooking easier by preparing simple recipes, planning meals in advance, and using affordable ingredients from local markets. Fast food does not need to be completely avoided, but it should not regularly replace balanced home-cooked meals. Convenience matters, but it should not always come before health, family responsibility, and wise spending. In conclusion, affordable and nutritious home-cooked meals should be prioritized because they support health, demonstrate care for our families, and help us manage our money wisely. Catholic teaching reminds us to value and protect the life we have been given, while responsible family decisions show love and consideration for others. Philippine nutrition guidance also encourages balanced eating and practical meal planning. Let us start choosing affordable local ingredients, planning meals carefully, and preparing food that benefits the whole family. The next time we decide what to eat, let us ask ourselves: Are we choosing only what is convenient, or what truly meets our family's needs? A healthier and more responsible family begins with the choices we make every day, so let us put nutritious home-cooked meals before frequent fast-food purchases.
evidences3. AP — Prioritizing needs and managing family expenses According to the DOST-FNRI's report published on March 7, 2026, based on the 2023 National Nutrition Survey, 62.6% of households buying food from traditional outlets, such as wet markets and small neighborhood stores, spent between ₱100 and ₱500 per purchasing occasion. In comparison, 55.1% of households buying from modern outlets, including supermarkets and restaurants, spent more than ₱1,000 per occasion. These figures show that household food spending varies depending on where people shop. By comparing prices, planning meals, and buying affordable ingredients, families can make better use of their limited budgets and prioritize essential needs over unnecessary expenses. However, these figures compare different food outlets and do not directly prove that home-cooked meals always cost less than fast food.
