Wheaten Words - December 2025

A club newsletter for members of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Greater Tampa Bay. This December 2025 issue includes a message from the president, volunteer spotlights, rescue reports, litter announcements, and articles about wheaten terrier shows and charitable giving.

This is the December 2025 issue of Wheaten Words, the newsletter of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Greater Tampa Bay (SCWTCGTB). It is written for club members and anyone interested in the breed. The issue opens with a message from President Pat Schmidt, who reflects on her first year in office and notes that the soft coated wheaten terrier is now considered a vulnerable breed by both the AKC and the UK Kennel Club.

A volunteer spotlight features Lisa and Gordon Alexander, who live on a horse farm in Ocala and have fostered and rescued many wheatens. The section includes a recipe for sweet potato cheddar cheese dog treats submitted by Gail Cox, Kaci and Elvis. A holiday Facebook winner is announced: Linda Hallas and Spicy the Reindeer.

The rescue report covers the final quarter of 2025, describing several adoptions and foster placements. Stories include Vicky Lyons adopting Declan (formerly Bentley II), Sarah Ryckis adopting one-year-old Minnie, the Erickson family adopting ten-year-old Devlin, Anne and David Jones adopting Gracie Lou, and Beth Rudy adopting seven-year-old Yogi Bear. The report is authored by the Rescue Committee: Melissa Nelson, Jody Greene, and Suzanne Sousa.

Litter announcements note that Pat Schmidt's Shannon (Maggie May) delivered four puppies on September 12, sired by GCH Sundance Second Chance. Tari O'Toole reports that Callie and Max welcomed six puppies to the GraCal Wheatens kennel in December. A special contribution by Kathi Elliot describes her experience judging soft coated wheaten terriers at the Club's Supported Entry in Ocala, reflecting on fronts, rear angulation, and movement in the breed.
