INNOVATING SOLUTIONSEXECUTIVESUMMARYGuided by Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao’s institutional motto, "Excellence and Relevance," the Center for Service- Learning and Community Engagement (CSCE) has positioned community service at the heart of its civic engagement initiatives. Thus, “Excellence and Relevance in Community Service” serves as the guiding principle that inspires CSCE to create meaningful, impactful, and sustainable initiatives that address societal needs while fostering holistic development within the Mapúa MCM community. This report reflects on how CSCE has fostered meaningful connections between academic learning and societal needs, creating transformative opportunities for the entire Mapúa MCM community. As the steward of Mapúa MCM’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, the CSCE champions community development within the framework of an academic institution. Through its two core units—Service-Learning (SL) and Community Engagement (CE)— the CSCE cultivates an environment where students, faculty, and staff can actively participate in addressing societal challenges while honing their skills and values. The Service-Learning unit integrates academic instruction with real-world application, enabling students to engage in course- driven community service. Programs such as the National Service Training Program (NSTP), co-curricular projects, and other learning initiatives emphasize experiential education, critical reflection, and collaboration, preparing students to become responsible and impactful contributors to society.The Community Engagement unit extends this vision by promoting voluntary participation in projects beyond curricular requirements. Faculty, administrators, staff, and students collectively engage in initiatives that tackle pressing societal issues, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and drive sustainable development. These programs reflect a shared commitment to social responsibility and embody the spirit of service and volunteerism. Central to CSCE’s approach is the use of rigorous assessment and evaluation tools to monitor outcomes and refine initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with community needs. This partnership builds upon Mapúa MCM’s earlier collaboration with the Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS), which began in 2023. Together, these alliances aim to strengthen sustainability efforts within Davao City and its neighboring regions. By actively engaging employees, faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders, Mapúa MCM fosters a community-driven approach to environmental care. Ballado, Jr., alongside Bantay Bukid volunteers and the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Tawan-tawan represented by Brgy. Captain Ricardo Gierran and Bantay Bukid President Allen Roy Cordero, Mapúa MCM committed to the Adopt-a-Riverbank Program. This initiative aims to nurture the watershed by planting endemic trees along the riverbanks and fostering research to enhance ecological preservation.Mapúa MCM’s partnership with Bantay Bukid and the BLGU of Tawan-tawan reflects its vision of achieving global standards while staying locally significant. It is an initiative designed to alleviate learning poverty among grades 1-3 learners of Langub Elementary School, one of the partner schools of Mapúa MCM. The project was officially launched on September 22, 2023, following a focus group discussion (FGD) and a pre-test conducted a week before its face-to-face implementation. Provision of Learner-Centered Materials: The program supplies reading materials designed to be interactive and meet the needs of young learners. These materials make the reading sessions more engaging and effective, fostering the learners’ love for reading. 3. VARK Model Activities: Using Fleming’s VARK model, Project H.E.L.P. designs activities that align with students' preferred learning styles—Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. A FRUITFUL MILESTONE | The Culminating Program took place last May 14, 2024 which celebrated the milestones of the Project H.E.L.P. Year 1 initiative. Several of Mapúa MCM employee and student volunteers, partners, and sponsors were present. The program highlights were the distribution of tokens for the pupils, a thanksgiving message from the Langub Elementary School representatives, and the intermission numbers of selected learners.Project H.E.L.P. made a positive impact on the overall learning experience of learners at Langub Elementary School. The additional instructional support, learner-centered materials, and differentiated tasks led to improved reading skills among students. Teachers reported increased engagement and participation from students, and volunteers noted positive changes in learners' reading abilities and confidence.Impact & ResultsImpact & ResultsImpact & ResultsHowever, there were areas for improvement that could further enhance the program's effectiveness. School conducted by the Office for Research, Development, and Innovation (ORDI) of Mapúa MCM.For Grade 1, this graph indicates a noticeable increase in the number of readers among the experimental groups compared to the control group. This suggests that our intervention was effective in increasing the number of readers.For Grade 2, the graph shows a consistent increase in the number of readers, especially among the experimental group. This indicates that our intervention had a positive effect on increasing the number of readers..For Grade 3, the graph also shows a consistent increase in the number of readers, particularly among the experimental group. For it’s first year of implementation, a total of 99 volunteers from various departments and programs within Mapúa MCM have contributed to the program. This initiative is not possible without the support of their respective superiors (for employees) and parents (for students). Year 2 Implementation: The program will continue what it started in helping sustain the gains in reading skills as students progress through their education. The 2nd year implementation will offer an opportunity to deepen its impact and reach more students with enhanced support and resources. This will help ensure that Project H.E.L.P. continues to effectively address learning poverty and promote literacy development. 2. Enhanced Reading Materials: Project H.E.L.P. will continue to enhance its materials that could provide students with more consistent support and reinforcement of their reading skills. 3. Increased Number of Volunteers: The program will deploy more volunteers through the NSTP students per session to have a substantial positive impact on the program’s effectiveness and the educational experience of the students. 4. Enhanced Training for Volunteers: The program will provide comprehensive training for student volunteers, focusing on effective teaching strategies. Well-trained volunteers are essential for the success of the program. Project H.E.L.P. was a comprehensive and effective initiative that addressed critical educational challenges at Langub Elementary School. By leveraging volunteer support, providing learner- centered materials, and designing activities based on the students’ learning styles, the program made a meaningful impact on improving reading skills among young learners. (Holding On to Positive Expectations) Gift-Giving Activity. This initiative, launched in 2020, honors Jeepney drivers for their vital role in the community. This year’s edition happened on December 14, 2023 where the program provided Jeepney drivers with gift packs as tokens of appreciation during the holiday season. Volunteer students and employees actively contributed, fostering a spirit of gratitude and unity while highlighting the importance of compassion and community service. Jeepney drivers are more than transport providers—they are everyday heroes who enable others to move forward, both literally and figuratively. Tracing its origins to 2019 as the NSTP-led initiative "Malayans on the Move to Value the Environment" (M.O.V.E.), this project has evolved into a continuous ecological awareness program. Initially mobilizing students, employees, administration, and partners, M.O.V.E. aimed to collect plastic waste through regular pitch-in activities conducted throughout the school year. Today, the Plastic Pitch-In project is spearheaded by the CSCE office, involving not only NSTP courses but also various departments and stakeholders within the Mapúa MCM community. The Plastic Pitch-In project operates in partnership with the Winder Recycling Company and the PetroEnergy Resources Corporation. These collaborations enable Mapúa MCM to encourage its students, faculty, and staff to donate single-use plastics for proper recycling. By turning plastic waste into valuable resources, the project contributes to the betterment of communities and strengthens Mapúa MCM’s advocacy for environmental protection. One notable milestone of this initiative was the donation of approximately 100 armchairs to Matina Aplaya Elementary School. These armchairs, crafted solely from recycled plastics collected through the Plastic Pitch-In prive, were turned over in last May 2019, underscoring the tangible impact of the project.A More SustainableA More Sustainable Mapúa MCMMapúa MCM A More Sustainable Mapúa MCMThrough the partnership of Mapúa MCM with Winder Recycling Company and PetroEnergy Resources Corporation, the institution was able to install a number of plastic benches for use around the campus.
