Keep the Wheels Turning: Grade 4 Toy Car STEM Workbook

A hands-on workbook for Grade 4 students that guides them through designing and building a toy car from recycled materials. Covers simple machines, shapes, energy, tools, safety, and the engineering design process.

This is a Grade 4 Resource and Technology workbook that teaches students how to design and build a toy car from recycled materials. It is part of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme and uses a project-based STEAM approach.

The workbook begins with an introduction to toy cars and simple machines, including wheels and axles. Students learn to identify car parts, understand 2D and 3D shapes, and explore how solids, liquids and gases are used in vehicles.

Later chapters cover working drawings, tools and materials, and safety in practical tasks. Students learn about hand tools, measurement, marking, cutting, boring and assembling components for their toy car prototypes.

The workbook explores different methods of movement including elastic band power, balloon power, battery and motor power, and gravity-based movement. Students also learn about mechanical energy, kinetic and potential energy, and push and pull forces.

The final chapters guide students through testing and evaluation, including performance tests and a toy car showcase. The workbook concludes with career exploration in the motor vehicle industry and a certificate for completing the engineering challenge.
