Background InformationJ. Gonzo was in born and raised in Cypress California. His family is Catholic and his Mexican American heritage is his central identity as an artist. Since he grew up in Orange County, he grew up around a lot of Catholic tradition and Chicano culture. His grandfather also played a big role in Gonzo’s love for comic books. He would bring Gonzo many comic books (mainly spiderman), which sparked interest in and eventually leading him into a career in comics.
Time PeriodIn the early 2000's, he began his professional career as a graphic designer, having a signature style in Influenced by the Chicano Culture. In 2011, he created and published La Mano Del destino, which is a independant comic series including Lucha Libre, Chicano culture, and Mexican folklore. in 2012-2019, he expanded his career by making more comic books, creating cover art, and collaberating with other publishers. He became known for blending traditional comic art with Chicano themes during this period. 2020 to present day, he’s continued to be a comic book artist and illustrator. Some of his artwork appeared in the 2024 Ghost Rider” Robbie Reyes Special #1. He is recognized today as a Chicano Artist.

Contributions to Design Gonzo combined Chicano Culture into Graphic design through Mexican American symbols and colors/traditions. His work helped bring Mexican American Art into mainstream media through comic books and conver art. He inspired other designers to cebelrate their culture, while making contemporary designs.

Critique of his work This red skull is more of the things that Gonzo designs in most of his comics. It shows the Mexican culture through the floral design on the skull and the vibrant colors. This spider-man poster is way different. This emphasizes action and storytelling, which is opposite of the red skull being calm and decorative. Though, the spider-man poster still shares bold and vibrant colors.
