BursaryA bursary is typically an award for a student with financial need. Bursaries may have academic requirements, but are generally focused on helping students who do not have the resources to pay for school on their own. You must Qualify for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program Be enrolled in a full- or part-time program below the graduate level that leads to a credential (citation, certificate, diploma, or degree) Each study period must be at least 6 weeks or 35 tuition hours Eligible programs include Unclassified/qualifying studies Continuing education that leads to a credential or supports labour market entry Multi-year programs may qualify for two grants (one per program year) if each year meets the minimum duration Not Eligible Standalone courses that don’t lead to a credential YEAF Transition Plan If you applied for the Youth Educational Assistance Fund (YEAF) by July 31, 2023, and were approved, you may continue receiving YEAF funding for your current program (up to 4 years or age 25). You cannot receive both YEAF and the Learning for Future Grant in the same program year. Who is Eligible? You may qualify if you Were in care or on a Youth Agreement at age 19 Achieved permanency (e.g. adoption) between ages 12–19 Spent at least 24 months in care between ages 12–19 Were in a comparable Indigenous care arrangement Youth connect with a SAJE Navigator starting at age 14; a SAJE Guide supports planning from age 18.5 to 25. Canada Post Awards for Indigenous StudentsThese awards recognize Indigenous students who’ve overcome barriers to return to education. Each recipient receives $2,000, with winners announced in January. Who’s Eligible? Federation of Community Social Services of BC Youth Education Bursary The Youth Education Bursary from the Federation of Community Social Services of BC offers up to $2,000/year to youth from care pursuing careers in human and social services. Applications reopen in spring. Youth Education Bursary (FCSSBC) Supports youth from care in BC who are studying toward careers in social services, including fields like social work, counselling, child and youth care, psychology, health care, law, and more. Eligibility You must: Be 30 or younger in the year of application Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident Be currently in or formerly in care in BC under one of the following: Continuing Custody Order (CCO) Temporary Custody Order (TCO) Voluntary Agreement or Special Needs Agreement Youth Agreement under the Child, Family and Community Services Act Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic program in Canada Be pursuing a career in human and social services You can apply even if you’re receiving other bursaries or a tuition waiver. Federation of BC Youth in Care Networks’ Dream Fund The Dream Fund from the Federation of BC Youth in Care Networks offers two bursaries to help youth in and from care pursue education and personal goals. Applications open three times a year: February, June, and October. Dream Fund Bursaries Supports youth in and from care in BC with funding for post- secondary education and personal development. Langara College From-Care Bursary Langara College From-Care Bursary Covers tuition and fees for students from government care in BC who don’t qualify for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (PTWP). If eligible for both, PTWP takes priority. Eligibility BC resident In or from care via MCFD or a Delegated Indigenous Agency (includes adoption or 12+ months in care) Enrolled in Regular Studies (full-/part-time) or Continuing Studies (loan-eligible) Able to attend classes in person In good academic standing Demonstrate financial need This bursary helps ensure students from care can still access tuition support even if they don’t meet PTWP criteria. UBC Tuition Waiver Program Covers tuition fees for students with lived experience in BC’s child welfare system who are enrolled in their first undergraduate degree at UBC.
