THE BELL RANG AT 4:17 A school mystery investigation game • 2–4 players • 30–45 minutes CASE FILE Location: Ravenwood School Victim: Mr. Arjun Mehta, examination coordinator Time of death: Between 4:05 PM and 4:20 PM Last known alive: 3:58 PM Mr. Mehta was found unconscious in the examination office shortly after the final school bell. A heavy object from the room was involved. Four people had reasons to be near the office that afternoon. Objective: Determine who is responsible, what brought them to the office, and which clues are misleading.

SUSPECT CARDS Cut these cards apart. Give one to each player. If fewer than four people play, use the 2–4 player rules on the last page. SUSPECT 1 — AARAV Position: Student council secretary Mr. Mehta had discovered that someone had altered a school competition result. Statement: “I left the office corridor at 3:55 PM. I never went back.” Secret: Aarav had actually returned to the corridor at around 4:08 PM. SUSPECT 2 — RIYA Position: School magazine editor Mr. Mehta had rejected an article Riya desperately wanted published. Statement: “I was in the library from 3:50 until 4:20. The librarian saw me.” Secret: She left the library for approximately five minutes. SUSPECT 3 — KABIR Position: Science club member Mr. Mehta had accused Kabir of taking something from the examination office. Statement: “I was in the science lab the entire time. I didn't even know Mr. Mehta was there.” Secret: Kabir knew exactly what was inside the examination office. SUSPECT 4 — MEERA Position: Debate team captain Mr. Mehta had threatened to remove Meera from an important competition after discovering something she had done. Statement: “I was practicing my speech in the auditorium. I heard the final bell at 4:17.” Secret: Meera's practice partner left the auditorium before 4:00.

EVIDENCE CARDS — ROUND 1 EVIDENCE 1 Found beside Mr. Mehta’s desk: “4:10. Come alone.” The handwriting appears to belong to someone who wanted Mr. Mehta to meet them privately. EVIDENCE 2 The school clock outside the examination office was found seven minutes slow. It showed 4:10 when the actual time was 4:17. EVIDENCE 3 A muddy footprint was found outside the office. It was approximately size 8. Aarav — 9 Riya — 6 Kabir — 8 Meera — 7 EVIDENCE 4 A student remembers seeing someone wearing a dark blue hoodie near the office around 4:12 PM. Only Aarav and Kabir owned dark blue hoodies.

EVIDENCE CARDS — ROUND 2 EVIDENCE 5 The examination office contained a large trophy. The trophy had been moved from its usual position. Investigators found no fingerprints belonging to Kabir on it. There were fingerprints belonging to three other people. EVIDENCE 6 The librarian confirms: “Riya was definitely in the library at 3:55. But I went to the staff room at approximately 4:05 and didn’t see her when I returned.” Riya cannot prove where she was between approximately 4:05 and 4:10. EVIDENCE 7 The science lab has an attendance sheet. Kabir signed into the laboratory at 3:52 PM. There is no record proving he remained there afterward. EVIDENCE 8 A note was discovered inside Mr. Mehta’s desk: “I know what you changed. Meet me after school.” There is no name. The ink matches the ink used in the blue-paper message.

FINAL EVIDENCE FINAL CLUE A security camera does not show the examination office, but it shows the corridor entrance. At 4:11 PM, someone enters the corridor. At 4:15 PM, the same person leaves. The face cannot be seen. However, the person is carrying something in their left hand. Only one suspect is known to be left-handed. INVESTIGATION SHEET 1. HOW TO PLAY 4 players: Give each player one suspect card. Reveal evidence cards one at a time. Players may question each other, but should not show their secret information unless they choose to reveal it. 3 players: Give three players suspects. The fourth suspect becomes an NPC controlled collectively. 2 players: Each player controls two suspects. Investigate the evidence together and write separate final accusations. Recommended order: Suspects → Evidence 1–4 → discussion → Evidence 5–8 → discussion → Final Clue → final accusations → solution. FINAL ACCUSATION I accuse: __________________________________________ Motive: ____________________________________________ Key evidence: ______________________________________ My confidence: n Low n Medium n High

n GAME MASTER — SOLUTION Do not show this page until everyone has made an accusation. Responsible suspect: AARAV. Aarav had discovered that Mr. Mehta knew about the altered competition result. Afraid of being exposed, Aarav wrote the meeting message and returned to the corridor around 4:08 PM. The corridor camera places the same person inside the corridor from approximately 4:11 to 4:15. During that time, the confrontation occurred and the trophy was used in the attack. Aarav then left before the final bell at 4:17. Why the clues mislead: The size-8 footprint points toward Kabir, but it is not enough to establish responsibility. The blue hoodie points toward both Aarav and Kabir. Riya really did leave the library, and Kabir really could not prove he stayed in the lab. The strongest final clue is that the person seen entering and leaving the corridor was carrying something in the left hand. Aarav is the only suspect identified as left-handed. The matching ink connects the meeting message to the anonymous note about the altered result. Important: The slow clock was a malfunction and was not deliberately changed. It is a red herring. CASE CLOSED. nn
