CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PCC in the community — growing a legacy at Tonia Village, Tailevu The PCC team came out in full force for a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) tree planting initiative at Mataqali Buremaci, Tonia Village, in Tailevu. Working side by side with the local community, we planted 200 native vesi seedlings to help restore natural habitats, protect the soil and combat climate change. 200 Native vesi seedlings Tailevu Tonia Village, Mataqali Buremaci PCC People Capability & Culture team Together With the community and Ministry of Forestry Why vesi? Vesi (Intsia bijuga) is one of Fiji’s most treasured native hardwoods. Its timber is valued for its strength and durability and has long been used for carving and canoe-building, and the tree was once regarded as sacred in Fiji. Today vesi is under pressure from over- harvesting and is classed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Because vesi trees can take 70–80 years to mature, every seedling we plant is an investment in the generations to come. WHAT OUR PLANTING ACHIEVES Restores habitat Native seedlings help rebuild forest cover and the habitat of local plants and wildlife. Protects the soil Tree roots hold soil in place and help reduce erosion on vulnerable slopes and along waterways. Fights climate change As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over their lifetime. Strengthens community Planting together with Mataqali Buremaci and Tonia Village builds lasting partnerships beyond the workplace. CSR TREE PLANTING, TONIA VILLAGE Source: PCC Division
