CHAPTER 1 THE BOY FROM MADEIRA CRISTIANO RONALDO WAS BORN ON 5 FEBRUARY 1985 IN FUNCHAL, ON THE PORTUGUESE ISLAND OF MADEIRA. HE WAS THE YOUNGEST OF FOUR CHILDREN IN HIS FAMILY. FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE, CRISTIANO DEVELOPED A STRONG PASSION FOR FOOTBALL. HE LOVED SPENDING HIS FREE TIME PLAYING WITH A BALL AND PRACTICING HIS SKILLS. FOOTBALL WAS MORE THAN JUST A GAME TO HIM. IT WAS SOMETHING HE DREAMED OF MAKING A CAREER FROM. AS A CHILD, CRISTIANO PLAYED FOR ANDORINHA, A LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUB WHERE HIS FATHER WORKED. HIS TALENT CONTINUED TO DEVELOP, AND PEOPLE BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT HE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL. AT THE AGE OF 12, CRISTIANO MADE A VERY DIFFICULT DECISION. LIFE AT SPORTING WAS CHALLENGING. CRISTIANO HAD TO ADAPT TO A NEW ENVIRONMENT, TRAIN HARDER, AND COMPETE AGAINST OTHER TALENTED YOUNG PLAYERS. BUT HE DID NOT GIVE UP. EVERY TRAINING SESSION BROUGHT HIM ONE STEP CLOSER TO HIS DREAM OF BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER. THE JOURNEY OF THE BOY FROM MADEIRA HAD BEGUN.
CHAPTER 2 A NEW LIFE IN LISBON IN 1997, WHEN CRISTIANO RONALDO WAS 12 YEARS OLD, HE LEFT MADEIRA AND MOVED TO LISBON TO JOIN THE YOUTH ACADEMY OF SPORTING CP. SPORTING OFFICIALLY RECORDS THAT RONALDO JOINED THE CLUB'S YOUTH SETUP THAT YEAR AT THE AGE OF 12. FOR CRISTIANO, THIS WAS A HUGE CHANGE. HE WAS LEAVING HIS HOME, HIS FAMILY, AND THE ISLAND WHERE HE HAD GROWN UP. YEARS LATER, RONALDO DESCRIBED MOVING TO LISBON AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE AS A VERY DIFFICULT DECISION FOR BOTH HIM AND HIS PARENTS.
HOWEVER, HIS TALENT QUICKLY BECAME NOTICEABLE. SPORTING SCOUT AURÉLIO PEREIRA REMEMBERED HIM AS AN 11-YEAR- OLD FROM MADEIRA WHO ARRIVED WITHOUT HIS PARENTS AND WAS SOON TRAINING WITH OLDER PLAYERS. HE RECALLED THAT CRISTIANO ALREADY SHOWED IMPRESSIVE SPEED AND TECHNICAL ABILITY. CRISTIANO HIMSELF WAS ALREADY THINKING SERIOUSLY ABOUT HIS FUTURE. HE WANTED TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER, AND HIS TIME AT SPORTING GAVE HIM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP TOWARD THAT GOAL. HE TRAINED WITH PLAYERS OLDER THAN HIMSELF AND CONTINUED IMPROVING HIS SKILLS. ACCORDING TO RONALDO, HIS DEVELOPMENT HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY: BY 15 HE WAS TRAINING WITH SPORTING'S B TEAM, AND BY 16 HE WAS TRAINING WITH THE FIRST TEAM.
The young boy from Madeira had taken a huge step. He was no longer simply dreaming about becoming a footballer. He was beginning to become one. He was beginning to become one. He was beginning to become one.
Chapter 3 The First-Team Dream By the time Cristiano Ronaldo was 17, his development at Sporting CP had progressed rapidly. He had already begun training with older players and was getting closer to the first team. Ronaldo later recalled that he was training with Sporting's B team at 15 and the first team at 16. In August 2002, his dream of playing professional football finally became a reality. On 14 August 2002, Cristiano made his first-team debut for Sporting CP against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round. He was only 17 years old when he came on as a substitute.
Although the match ended 0–0, Ronaldo had taken an important step in his career. He was no longer only a talented academy player. He had now played for Sporting's senior team. A few weeks later, he scored his first senior goals for Sporting. On 7 October 2002, he scored twice against Moreirense in the Portuguese league. His performances began attracting more attention. His speed, dribbling, and confidence made him stand out from other young players. But the biggest opportunity of his young career was still ahead.
In August 2003, Sporting played a friendly against Manchester United to celebrate the opening of Sporting's new stadium. Ronaldo produced an impressive performance as Sporting won 3–1. His display caught the attention of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Only days later, Ronaldo's life changed again. At just 18 years old, he signed for Manchester United in August 2003. Chapter 4 A New Beginning at Manchester United In August 2003, Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in England to begin a new chapter of his career at Manchester United. He was only 18 years old, and joining one of the biggest clubs in the world was a huge opportunity. He was also entering a completely different football environment from the one he had known in Portugal. His Manchester United debut came on 16 August 2003, against Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford. Ronaldo came on as a substitute in the second half and immediately caught the attention of the crowd with his speed, dribbling, and confidence. Manchester United won the match 4–0.
Ronaldo's first months at the club were about learning and adapting. He had incredible skill, but he still had to become stronger and more consistent. Under manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United coaching staff, he began developing his game further. On 1 November 2003, Ronaldo scored his first goal for Manchester United. It came from a free kick against Portsmouth at Old Trafford. The 18-year-old struck the ball powerfully into the top corner, giving the goalkeeper little chance.
His first season also brought his first major trophy with the club. Ronaldo scored in Manchester United's 3–0 FA Cup final victory over Millwall in May 2004. The young player from Madeira was beginning to make his mark in English football. But this was only the beginning. Chapter 6 The Move to Real Madrid By 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo had become one of the biggest stars in football. After six successful seasons at Manchester United, he was ready for a new challenge. That challenge came from Spain. On 26 June 2009, Real Madrid completed the signing of Ronaldo from Manchester United for a then-world- record transfer fee of £80 million (€94 million). He officially joined the Spanish club on 1 July. Ronaldo was moving to one of the most famous clubs in football history. Real Madrid had a huge worldwide following, and the expectations surrounding their new signing were enormous.
On 6 July 2009, Ronaldo was officially presented at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Thousands of supporters came to see their new number 9. His first competitive match for Real Madrid came on 29 August 2009 against Deportivo La Coruña. Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot as Madrid won 3–2. His first season in Spain was already impressive. Ronaldo scored 33 goals in all competitions during the 2009–10 season. But what followed was even more remarkable.
Over the next several years, Ronaldo continued to score at an extraordinary rate. He became more than the talented winger who had arrived from Manchester. He developed into a world- class goalscorer. During his nine years at Real Madrid, he scored 451 goals in 438 competitive appearances, becoming the club's all- time leading goalscorer. He also helped Real Madrid win four UEFA Champions League titles, including three in a row from 2016 to 2018. The young player who had once left Madeira to chase a dream was now making history at one of the greatest clubs in the world. But his greatest achievements at Real Madrid were still to come.
Chapter 7 Reaching the Top Cristiano Ronaldo's time at Real Madrid became the most successful period of his career so far. He was no longer simply a talented footballer. He had become one of the most important players in the world. The 2013–14 season was especially remarkable. Ronaldo scored 17 goals in the UEFA Champions League, setting a record for the most goals scored by a player in a single Champions League campaign at that time. Real Madrid went on to win the competition, defeating Atlético Madrid 4–1 after extra time in the final. That season, Ronaldo also scored 69 goals in 59 matches for Real Madrid and Portugal. His incredible performances earned him the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or, his second global best-player award after his first in 2008.
The following year was just as impressive. In 2014, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win another Champions League title, and he was named UEFA Best Player in Europe for the 2013–14 season. He also won the Ballon d'Or again in January 2015. His goals, records, and trophies were beginning to make his name a part of football history. But Ronaldo wasn't satisfied with what he had already achieved. He continued training, competing, and looking for the next challenge. At Real Madrid, he had reached a level that few footballers ever achieve. And there were still more records to break. Cristiano Ronaldo was becoming a legend.
Chapter 8 A Golden Year The year 2016 became one of the most memorable years of Cristiano Ronaldo's career. At club level, Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid. The team reached the UEFA Champions League final against Atlético Madrid in Milan. The match finished 1–1 after extra time, and Real Madrid won the penalty shootout 5–3. Ronaldo scored the decisive final penalty. But Ronaldo still had another dream. He wanted to win a major trophy with Portugal. Portugal reached the final of UEFA EURO 2016, where they faced France. Ronaldo had to leave the match early because of an injury, but he continued encouraging his teammates from the sidelines. Portugal eventually won 1–0 after extra time, becoming European champions for the first time.
Winning both the Champions League with Real Madrid and the European Championship with Portugal made 2016 an extraordinary year for Ronaldo. He was also named UEFA Best Player in Europe for the second time. Later that year, another major award followed. Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for the fourth time. The award recognized his incredible performances for both club and country throughout the year.
For Ronaldo, 2016 showed what years of hard work could lead to. He had won trophies with his club. He had achieved something special with his country. And he had once again been recognized as one of the best footballers in the world. But Ronaldo's journey was still far from finished.
Chapter 9 Another Record-Breaking Season After his incredible year in 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo continued to achieve more with Real Madrid. The 2016–17 season became another special chapter in his career. Real Madrid won the La Liga title, their first since 2012, and Ronaldo played an important role throughout the season. He scored 25 league goals and finished the season with 42 goals in all competitions. But the biggest moment came in the UEFA Champions League.
Real Madrid reached the final against Juventus in Cardiff, Wales, on 3 June 2017. Ronaldo scored two goals as Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4–1. With that victory, Real Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to win the competition in two consecutive seasons. Ronaldo finished the Champions League season as the tournament's top scorer with 12 goals. He also became the first player to score in three different Champions League finals. His performances earned him the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. Later in 2017, another major achievement followed.
Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for the fifth time, bringing him level with Lionel Messi at five awards each at that time. The boy who had started playing football in Madeira was now collecting some of the biggest individual and team honours in the sport. But there was still another important chapter waiting for him. A new challenge was approaching.
Chapter 10 A New Challenge in Italy After nine incredible years at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo decided that it was time for a new challenge. During his time in Spain, he had won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and had become the club's all-time leading scorer. By 2018, however, Ronaldo was ready to experience something different. On 10 July 2018, Juventus officially announced the signing of Ronaldo from Real Madrid. He signed a four- year contract with the Italian club, with Juventus agreeing to pay €100 million for his transfer, plus additional costs.
At 33 years old, Ronaldo was moving to another country and another major European league. It was a completely new challenge. Juventus supporters were excited to see their new star. Ronaldo had already faced Juventus many times with Real Madrid, including in the 2017 Champions League final. He had even scored a spectacular bicycle kick against Juventus in the 2018 Champions League quarter-finals.
Now, instead of playing against Juventus, he would wear their famous black-and-white shirt. The move showed something important about Ronaldo's career. Even after achieving so much at Real Madrid, he was still willing to leave his comfort zone and prove himself somewhere new. A new country. A new club. A new challenge. The next chapter of Ronaldo's journey had begun.
Chapter 11 Making His Mark in Italy Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Juventus in 2018 with a huge reputation. He had already won the Champions League five times and had scored hundreds of goals for Manchester United and Real Madrid. Now, he had to prove himself in Italy. His first few matches were not easy. Ronaldo had to adapt to a new league, a new team, and a different style of football. His first Juventus goal finally came on 16 September 2018, against Sassuolo. He scored twice in the match, helping Juventus win 2–1.
As the season continued, Ronaldo became an important part of the team. In his first Serie A season, he scored 21 league goals and helped Juventus win the Italian league title. He also helped the club win the Italian Super Cup. One of his most memorable moments in Italy came in the 2018–19 Champions League. Juventus had lost the first leg of their round-of-16 tie against Atlético Madrid 2–0. In the second leg, Ronaldo scored a spectacular hat-trick, helping Juventus win 3–0 and complete a remarkable comeback.
Ronaldo continued performing at a high level during his three seasons with Juventus. By the time he left the club in 2021, he had made 133 appearances and scored 101 goals, while winning five trophies. His time in Italy proved that even after reaching the highest levels of football, Ronaldo could still adapt to a new challenge. But after three seasons in Turin, another familiar destination was waiting. Manchester was calling him home again.
