Catalysing Excellence……. It gives me immense pleasure to present this edition of C-ATOMOS, the annual newsletter of the Department of Chemistry, Lady Doak College. This issue captures the milestones, achievements, and memorable moments of the academic year 2025–2026, reflecting our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation, and societal responsibility. Through a vibrant series of academic programmes, guest lectures, workshops, field visits, and outreach initiatives, we have continued to nurture scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and professional competence among our students. Eminent experts from academia, research institutions, and industry enriched our learning environment by sharing their expertise on interdisciplinary science, sustainable energy, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and emerging career opportunities. Coaching programmes for IIT-JAM, GATE, and CSIR-JRF examinations further strengthened our students' aspirations towards higher education and research. A landmark achievement of the year was the successful organization of the CSIR-sponsored International AIIC-2025 Conclave, themed Science Driven – Industry Powered – Future Focused. The conclave brought together distinguished scientists, researchers, industry leaders, and young scholars on a common platform to promote innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. The year also witnessed several notable student accomplishments. Prestigious fellowships, internships at premier institutions such as JNCASR, BARC, and ISRO, industrial training opportunities, academic awards, and outstanding performances in intercollegiate competitions reflected the dedication and potential of our students. We are equally proud of our alumni whose achievements continue to strengthen the department's legacy. Another milestone was the establishment of strategic collaborations with premier organizations such as CIPET and IMAI USA. These partnerships have opened new avenues for research, internships, skill development, and international collaboration, enriching the academic ecosystem of the department. These accomplishments have been possible through the collective efforts of our dedicated faculty, enthusiastic students, supportive alumni, industry partners, and well-wishers. I extend my sincere appreciation to each one of them for their invaluable contributions. DEPARTMENT PROGRAMMES Dr. V. Krishnakumar, Chief Technology Officer, Oculotix Inc., USA, delivered an insightful lecture on "Innovating Medical Devices through Interdisciplinary Science." The session highlighted the vital role of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing medical device innovation, emphasizing the integration of chemistry, materials science, engineering, artificial intelligence, and healthcare. DEPARTMENT PROGRAMMES 4 Mr. C. Arun Sudarsan, Chief Design Officer, Dot2Dot – Business Design Agency, Madurai, conducted an engaging workshop on "Chempreneurs: Formulate Your Ideas" for UG and PG students. The session focused on nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset among students by guiding them through the process of identifying real-world problems, generating innovative ideas, and transforming them into viable business opportunities. The students were introduced to the fundamentals of design thinking, business model development, value proposition design, and startup ecosystem support, while encouraging innovation-driven entrepreneurship in the field of chemistry. 5 International Academia–Industry–Innovation Conclave (AIIC–2025): Science Driven – Industry Powered – Future Focused 27–29.11.2025
6 The three-day International Academia–Industry–Innovation Conclave (AIIC-2025), a first-of-its-kind initiative sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, was jointly inaugurated today by the Departments of Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences, Lady Doak College, Madurai. The event, scheduled from November 27th to 29th, 2025, was inaugurated by Honourable Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR, and Secretary, DSIR, New Delhi. In the inaugural address, Dr. Kalaiselvi emphasized the importance of unlearning the obsolete, urging students to think beyond routine boundaries and explore new possibilities for developing biodegradable alternatives for a sustainable future. Dr. N. Valarmathi, Former Deputy Director, URSC–ISRO delivered the keynote address and emphasized the need for space exploration and highlighted India’s growing leadership in space research. The conclave, themed “Science Driven – Industry Powered – Future Focused,” aims to bridge academia and industry by promoting innovation, research collaboration, and sustainable development aligned with NEP 2020, SDGs, Digital India, and Startup India. The Conclave featured invited talks, panel discussions, oral and poster presentations, industry exhibitions, and a Hackathon for science and engineering students. All activities were centred on sustainable advancements in Energy, Environment, Healthcare, and allied sectors. 7 An Extension Activity on Hands-on Laboratory sessions were conducted for Higher Secondary School Children to promote scientific curiosity and experiential learning. The programme provided students with practical exposure to basic chemistry experiments, laboratory techniques, and safe handling of chemicals through interactive demonstrations and guided activities. The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and laboratory practice while fostering scientific temper, critical thinking, and enthusiasm for higher education in science. Academia - Industry Linkage MoUs Signed 9 The partnership aims to promote knowledge exchange, facilitate student internships, industrial training, collaborative research projects, faculty development programmes, and skill enhancement initiatives in advanced materials, polymer science, and emerging technologies. LiFE ACTIVITIES 12 As part of the World Food Day and National Food Day celebrations, the Department of Chemistry organized an awareness and outreach programme at Appar Higher Secondary School collaboration with Voice trust foundation, Madurai. Thirty-five III B.Sc. Chemistry students actively conducted interactive demonstrations and awareness activities on food safety, nutrition, food adulteration, food additives, pesticide residues, and healthy dietary practices. The programme aimed to enhance scientific awareness among school students and promote informed food choices through hands-on experiments and engaging discussions. A special address for the day was delivered by Dr. R. Karnan, State President, Tamil Nadu Citizen Consumer Protection Centre, and Mr. S. Chandramohan, Food Safety Officer (FSO), Madurai East Block, Madurai. This was followed by an elaborate Food Day exhibition, which was inaugurated by Dr. R. Karnan, State President. AMALCHEM CLUB The Chemistry Association was inaugurated for the academic year 2025–2026 with an inspiring inaugural address by Dr. S. Devaraj, Associate Professor, School of Chemical & Biotechnology, SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur, on the theme "The Integral Role of Chemists in Sustainable Energy Development." The lecture emphasized the pivotal role of chemistry in addressing global energy challenges through sustainable innovations, renewable energy technologies, and green scientific practices. The programme also witnessed the release of the Department Newsletter, C-Atomos 2025, showcasing the academic, research, and extension activities of the department. As part of the inaugural celebrations, student academic achievers were felicitated, with special recognition given to Ms. R. Suvethaa for successfully clearing GATE 2025 with an All India Rank (AIR) of 2862. AMALCHEM CLUB 14 The Department of Chemistry organized a Career Awareness Lecture on "Chemistry: The Central Science and its Career Opportunities" to broaden students' understanding of the diverse career avenues available in the field of chemistry. The session was delivered by Mr. R. Jegan, Superintendent, Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory, Southern Railway, Tiruchirappalli. The resource person shared valuable insights into career opportunities in government organizations, research laboratories, quality control and quality assurance, analytical testing, public sector undertakings, and the railway sector. He also guided students on competitive examinations, essential technical and professional skills, and emerging career prospects in the chemical sciences. The interactive session motivated students to explore diverse career pathways and prepare strategically for higher studies and professional success. The AMALCHEM Club organized the Inter-Collegiate Meet, RASAYAN – Indian Knowledge System: Past – Present – Future to promote scientific creativity and appreciation of India's traditional knowledge systems. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. P. B. Gobiga, Environmentalist, VOICE TRUST, Madurai, who spoke on the role of Indian Knowledge Systems in sustainability and environmental conservation. Seven competitions were conducted in two sessions, encouraging innovation and scientific thinking. The valedictory address by Dr. Jessie Ranjitha Jebaselvi C., Associate Professor & Head (i/c), Department of English, emphasized the contribution of chemistry to sustainable development. The event witnessed 96 participants from 8 colleges. Thiagarajar College, Madurai won the Overall Championship Trophy, while Fatima College, Madurai and The Gandhigram Rural Institute, Dindigul jointly secured the Runner-up Trophy.
