What purpose does a gleaming car key serve when it is responsible for holding back money for a child’s academic needs? Envision a household experiencing a fleeting surge of joy for purchasing a new vehicle, yet they are constantly troubled by the payment for tuition fees, whether the grocery bill for the following months could fit their budget or not, or how they could handle an urgent medical situation with limited money. With this instance in mind, the genuine question remains for the decisions consumers make: is it true that what they allocate their expenses on is a necessity and not simply part of a facade of success they wish to display? Needs must precede wants when secure and dependable means of public transportation is at the end of one’s fingertips, for it opens doors that provides means of guarding the resources of a household, sustaining communities’ living, and puts how to properly discern while considering Christian values to practice.
In order for an individual to utilize their money wisely, they must first learn how to determine the need to arrive at a place they must reach from the impulse of owning a certain vehicle. Workers need to travel to their workplaces, students must get to their schools—neither of these occurrences require the acquisition of a car. Public transit is capable of meeting the need to travel without the troublesome maintenance prices, parking fees, purchasing price, driver’s license expenses, registration, and insurance the ownership of a private automobile seeks for. Picture being given an option of paying to access a seat instead of paying for the costly price of an entire car—the aim is to appear where one needs to be at, not immediately referring to the possession of the means to get there. In spite of the benefits commuting encompasses, the comparison with integrity must present one’s whole journey, containing the amount of time they waited, the availability and security.
Exercising critical-thinking in expense distribution in terms of transportation is vital as shown in government statistics. During 2022 in the United States, transportation makes up 15% of an average families’ budget and it was the second largest expense these households tackle everyday after housing—as dispersed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Amongst families that attain approximately below $25,000 yearly, those that obtained at least a single vehicle disbursed 38% net on conveyance, in contrast with the 5% who do not have an automobile in possession. These are not estimates in the Philippines, but they are American figures: the analogy alone does support that not acquiring a car would have equal savings as with other households. However, spending in the scope of traveling is able to compete with other necessary expenditures as demonstrated in the findings—leading cost- effectiveness to pertain to the financial security of a family rather than a subjective opinion.
Fathoming the concepts of demand and supply can as well help in synthesizing a decision for transportation. As taught in the subject of Araling Panlipunan to Grade 9 pupils in FAITH Catholic School, demand refers to what consumers are capable and willing to spend on at diverse costs: on the other hand, supply is the ability of producers to provide products with a broad range of prices. For individuals with controlled expenses, money is not the only thing that will be directly sacrificed when they prioritize the attainment of a car, but the needs that require this as well such as academic expenses, medication, or groceries. Nonetheless, the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies elucidates that jeepneys bridge the gap where transit supply does not satisfy what the public demands. The relations between these, share why both self control and adequate transportation means are needed in responsible decision-making.
The utilization of public transit as well aligns the personal expenditure to other individuals’ living. Public transportation heavily depends on 80% of commuters in urban areas in the Philippines, with jeepneys being the 40% of the total public transits as reported by Dimalanta, Atienza, and Samonte’s 2023 UP CIDS. This policy brief as well depicts how operating jeepneys disperse income not simply for drivers but also for dispatchers, maintenance shops, and several more. Therefore, a fare goes beyond just a passenger’s expense to travel, it supplies to the activity of livelihoods and service around it. However, not every single peso becomes a driver’s income or remains within the bounds of the community, opting for shared means of conveyance over car ownership can assist workers that prompt everyday action.
Published by ABS-CBN during March 2026, a 53-year-old, jeepney driver, and father of five children, Joseph Orinion shared that the price of fuel approximately increased from ₱900 to ₱2,000 within a day. He was frequently left with just ₱200 to ₱300 per day as stated in the report. Joseph Orinion’s experience reveals how the transport of a commuter can as well assist in contributing to other individuals' needs on a day-to-day basis. This bridged gap inspires to practice the virtue of respect, fair incomes, and upheaval policies that considers both drivers and passengers. When Christian discernment is integrated into transportation, stewardship refers to guarding households and caring for God’s creations. One’s integrity is measured through whether the purchase they created was entirely for self benefit and status or for the sake of helping other families. Practicing transcendence helps individuals to recall that when a consumer utilizes their money, the first thought that comes to mind is that they are doing this for the sake of their neighbors rather than a way of seeking validation that they are fulfilled because they could purchase costly vehicles.
In conclusion, needs precede wants due to the fact that purchasing should serve as a manner that sustains life before it serves as a means of appearance. Public transportation can help numerous people mitigate the allocation of their expenses toward non-essential financial commitments whilst contributing to a crucial system of services. The option that ensures the genuine needs are met and does not neglect household expenses and the society’s common good is wiser than the cheapest or most comfortable car. Before creating a purchase, keep in mind how much it entirely costs, distinguish why it must be bought, and does it contribute to the common good of the community. Choose what transports your responsibilities toward the greater good, not the one that merely puts up a facade that makes successfulness seem convincing.
