01 Introduction In the 1950s, people from Honnavar city and surrounding rural areas had to go to distant towns for higher education. To overcome this situation, under the leadership of Shri R.S Hegde the educationist, M.P.E Society was established in 1963 . In 1964 MPE Society College of Arts and Sciences was started and in 1976 commerce course was started. Late. Shri. R.S Hegde as the founder president and Shri Sitaramayya served as the first principal, who is also a famous writer and educationist of the country and laid a solid foundation for the college. The main ones who worked tirelessly in the growth of the organization were Late. Dr. M.P Karki, Late. Shri R. N Kamath, Late. Dr. V. K Balkur, Late. Shri. M. M. Jalisatgi, Late. V. G Kaikatgeri and Late. Shri. Jinadatta Gowda are some of the dignitaries. When the organization was in financial trouble, those who helped the organization like those in need were the Dharmasthala priest Rajarshi Dr. Virendra Heggade. From then on, our college got the name Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwar Mahavidyalaya. The continuous guidance and helping hand of Dr. Virendra Heggade and the grace of Shri Manjunath Swamy have always helped the organization. Under the efficient leadership of Mr. Krishnamurthy Bhat Shivani, ambitious projects such as Pratibhapuraskar, Vidyasanjeevini and Mid-Day Meals for students have come into action. The institute started with only 164 students, today more than 1000 students are studying in various UG and PG courses in college. An Undergraduate Research Center has been set up to facilitate involvement in research at the graduate level.
