It was the night before Lakhey's very first day at School. Lakhey sat on his bed and stared at his shiny new school bag that had a dragon picture on it. Lakhey: "What if the other children don't like me? What if I get lost?" Aama: "Lakhey, you have the biggest heart in all of Kathmandu. Just be yourself and you will find a good friend." Lakhey's Aama (Mummy) sat beside him and gave him a warm hug. Lakhey put his new red pencil, book in his bag and went to sleep.The Night Before School4

The next morning, Lakhey wore his new school uniform white shirt, blue pants, and polished black shoes. Aama put a tika on his forehead for good luck. Aama: "Remember, Lakhey, be kind, listen to your teacher and have fun." Lakhey walked to school. The streets smelled of marigold flowers and a good smell from the temples. Lakhey felt a little nervous and a little excited.The First Morning6

At the school gate, Lakhey saw a boy sitting alone on a bench. He was crying softly. His name was Kaji. Lakhey: "Hello! Why are you crying? Are you sad too?" Kaji: "I am scared. This is my first day and I don't know anyone." Lakhey: "Me too! But now we know each other! Let's go inside together." Kaji wiped his tears and together, they walked through the big school door, hand in hand.Making a New Friend8

The classroom was bright and colourful. There were paintings of mountains, rivers, and animals on the walls. A kind teacher named Maya stood at the front. Maya Teacher: "Welcome, everyone! In this class, we are all friends. We learn together and we help each other." Lakhey saw bright crayons, picture books, and building blocks. His eyes went wide! Lakhey: "Wow! This place is amazing."In the Classroom10

At tiffin time, all the children sat in a circle outside under the big pipal tree. Lakhey opened his tiffin box (chiura, achar, and sel roti.). Kaji brought a banana cake. Lakhey: "Would you like some sel roti? Aama made it this morning." Kaji: "Yes please! And here, have a piece of my banana cake." They shared their food and laughed and talked. Soon, other children joined them. By the end of tiffin, Lakhey had FIVE new friends.Tiffin Time12

Going Home HappyAama: "How was your first day, Lakhey?" Lakhey: "Aama, I was scared at first. But I found a friend because I was kind. School is wonderful. I want to go again tomorrow." Aama laughed and gave him the warmest hug. As they walked home past the temples, Lakhey danced his happy Lakhey dance all the way.14

Hello little friend, 💛 I am so happy that you are reading my very first storybook. I love spending time with little children like you, listening to your giggles, your funny questions, and your big, happy stories. Why I chose Lakhey… He is from our home, Nepal. Many heroes in stories come from faraway lands. But Lakhey is right here in our streets, in our festivals, and in our hearts. He looks scary, but he is so kind. He has a big red face and a loud roar, but a heart full of love. He learns new things, just like you. When Lakhey tries something new, he feels exactly the way you do. And big feelings always feel smaller when a friend is right beside you. Whenever you feel shy, scared, close your eyes and dance with Lakhey. Brave hearts dance, even when they are a little scared.
