03 |October 2026It is a real pleasure to welcome you all to Lisbon for the ASI Contest Best Sommelier of the World 2026. Portugal is a country very close to my heart, and it is wonderful to see the ASI family gathering here. It is a land of hospitality, culture, food and wine, and we hope that everyone joining us will have the chance to experience its spirit during the week. ASI is a non-profit organisation driven by voluntary work. Behind every competition, certification, educational project and event are people giving their time, knowledge and energy because they believe in this profession and in the importance of sharing, learning and growing together. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the volunteers who have travelled from every corner of the world to support our Portuguese friends and help make this event a success. Their generosity and commitment truly reflect what ASI stands for. We are also deeply grateful to Tiago Paula, Nelson Guerreiro and the entire team of the Associação dos Escanções de Portugal (AEP) for the enormous work they have put into creating the ideal setting for this contest. Their dedication and attention to detail have laid the foundations for what promises to be a truly memorable week.So many people have given, and continue to give, their time and expertise to make this event what it is that it would be impossible to thank each of them by name. To each and every one of you, whether behind the scenes or in the spotlight, our deepest gratitude: this contest would simply not exist without you. ASI has always been about much more than titles and competitions. It is about people, friendship, curiosity and the connections we build across countries, cultures and generations. To all the candidates: enjoy the moment, trust in the work that has brought you here, and be proud to represent your countries on this stage. On behalf of ASI, a very warm welcome to Lisbon and to Portugal. May this be a week of excellence, friendship and memories that will last far beyond the final. ASIASIASSOCIATION DE LA SOMMELLERIE INTERNATIONALE ASSOCIATION DE LA SOMMELLERIE INTERNATIONALE05 |October 2026A B O U T T H E E V E N T The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale is the world’s preeminent global advocate for the needs of the modern sommelier. ASI was founded in 1969 as an umbrella organisation to raise the bar for restaurant service professionals internationally. While its historical roots are in Europe, ASI is now represented on 6 continents. ASI’s members are not individual sommeliers, but rather national sommelier associations themselves. With 70 national associations as full members and 2 applicant countries, it is uniquely positioned to drive conversation within the industry at the international, national, and local levels. In the intervening 57 years, ASI has welcomed into the fold national associations from far beyond the Old World, stretching to the Americas, Asia, Pacific, and Africa. With each new member, ASI’s reach has expanded, raising the bar for sommeliers in one new land after another. In recent years, a renewed focus has been placed on education at all levels, both in the classroom and through the crucible of sommelier contests. Or in the words of our motto: Learn. Challenge. Compete.
AEPAEPASSOCIAÇÃO DOS ESCANÇÕES DE PORTUGAL ASSOCIAÇÃO DOS ESCANÇÕES DE PORTUGALThe Portuguese Sommeliers Association (Associação dos Escanções de Portugal) is a national cultural association dedicated to bringing together professionals working in wine and beverage service within the hospitality sector and related establishments. The Association plays an important role in promoting the sommelier profession, supporting professional development, and contributing to the appreciation and promotion of wine culture in Portugal and abroad. Its main activities include the promotion and dissemination of Portuguese and international wine products, as well as the organisation of training and specialist courses in wine service. The Association also promotes conferences, lectures, seminars, and other professional initiatives aimed at encouraging continuous education and the development of its members. Another important area of its work is the organisation of study visits in Portugal and abroad, particularly to major wine-producing regions and viticultural centres. These activities provide members with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of wines, wine-producing regions, production methods, and the international wine sector. The Portuguese Sommeliers Association also works to promote the sommelier profession, its techniques, professional standards, and code of ethics, while encouraging cooperation and exchange with similar associations and professional organisations in other countries. Through these activities, the Association contributes to the development of professional skills, the promotion of wine culture, and the recognition of the sommelier profession, both nationally and internationally.06 |October 2026 A B O U T T H E E V E N T

Based in the heart of Burgundy’s Hautes-Côtes, Maison Arnaud Boué embraces an open and distinctive vision of Burgundy: one that celebrates the richness of its diversity, where every appellation deserves to be explored and brought into the spotlight. From regional appellations to Grand Crus, Arnaud’s primary aim is to reveal the identity of each terroir, without hierarchy or preconceptions. His approach is founded on a simple belief: the quality and emotion of a wine are not defined by its appellation alone, but emerge from the meeting of a place, a vintage and a knowledge. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, the Maison favours a precise and measured approach. Manual work is prioritized, inputs are kept to a minimum whenever possible, and Arnaud is steadily working towards becoming 100% organic, with a deep respect for the soil, biodiversity and the living environment. In the wines themselves, this philosophy translates into a pursuit of purity, freshness, and fruit expression. The aim is not to transform the terroir, but to give it the freedom to express itself, through precise winemaking and carefully considered ageing designed to support the wine rather than overshadow it. Through this approach, Maison Arnaud Boué seeks to offer a Burgundy that is vibrant, free, and diverse: a Burgundy that goes beyond its most famous names and invites wine lovers to explore the full richness of its terroirs and appellations. The Czar Vineyards are located in Criação Velha, Pico island, Azores, Portugal. In 2004 they were recognized as Unesco World Heritage, due to the extraordinary man-made landscape of the site, representing an outstanding example of the adaptation of farming practices to a remote and challenging environment. These vines were, and continue to be, planted within the fissures of the solid lava rock, protected from the ocean and wind by an imposing pattern of orderly, long, linear walls forming an extensive network of enclosed stone walled fields, or currais that if put on a stright line can circle the earth around the equator twice. The endemic, and almost forgotten, species of Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores, and Terrantez do Pico are the only grapes planted at our vineyards. By working to maintain sustainable and traditional farming practices, whose origins date back to the 15th century, we preserve the heritage, history, and integrity of Pico’s wine. For centuries Czars sent ships to acquire Picos traditional “passado” wine. During this time, it achieved such importance that the wine was prescribed by doctors and written about by Leo Tolstoy. After the Russian revolution in 1917, bottles of “passado” Pico wine were found in the wine cellars of the Palace belonging to Nicolas II, the last Czar. A few years later, my father, José Duarte Garcia started rebuilding the traditional vineyards, honoring their history by naming the wine, Czar. Czar is the only known wine in the world that naturally reaches an alcohol content of 19% or more, using the same traditional methods as the ones that were served for centuries at the tables of Popes, Kings, Emperors and Czars. Being this is a completely natural wine, without any addition of alcohol, sugar or yeasts, its’ composition varies depending on the grapes’ level of maturity and on the uncertain climate conditions of the island. Therefore, not every year harvest reaches the necessary quality to produce Czar. This wine should be served between 12 to 14 degrees Celsius and has a vast paring diversity from appetizers to semi sweet desserts or simply on it’s own. These wines aim to showcase the unique characteristics of this region, which we love and which, due to its proximity to the sea and the Sintra Mountains, creates an ultra-Atlantic microclimate that allows us to produce wines with highly distinctive characteristics, marked by salinity, tension and minerality. Another objective of this project is to respect the cultivation of the vines and their relationship with the environment. Tejo wines have a deep-rooted heritage in Portugal’s oldest wine region. Wine estates have flourished along the Tejo River since Roman times. The influence of this ancient wine- producing culture is evident in the many historic architectural legacies adding charm to the landscape. From deepest history to present times, one feature characterises the Tejo region and, most importantly, its wines. Freshness. The dominant feature of the whole region, the river, bestows on its surrounding geography a near-unique climate – warm and generally dry days, much cooler and more moist nights, often with quite heavy early-morning mists. Vinha dos Padres is a wine producer located in Reguengo, in the municipality of Portalegre, within the Portalegre DOC and the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, with documented records dating back to the 18th century. Acquired in 2020 by the family that founded Tapada de Coelheiros, the estate was revived after decades of abandonment and is distinguished by its vines planted in the 1880s and by vinification in hand- pitched, century-old terracotta pots (talhas). Under the oenological direction of Susana Esteban, the wines have received international recognition, including high scores from Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, and James Suckling, and the title of Producer of the Year 2025 from Mais Alentejo magazine – their very first year of release. Between roots and fruit, the brand was born from a sense of wonder for the land, tradition and the beauty of craftsmanship. It all began with a passion for ginjinha, in the streets of Lisbon. That ritual led to the exploration of old recipes, the discovery of the secrets of those who know the land and, with time and curiosity, the transformation of a hobby into a craft. During the pandemic, life led ALQOESTE to Western Portugal. Surrounded by local markets, Rocha pear orchards and vineyards, we rediscovered the rhythm of nature, inspiring the creation of liqueurs rooted in the slow passage of time, using fruit selected at the right moment, Portuguese wine spirit and a natural process, free from additives and artifice. With the support of local initiatives, such as Fábrica do Empreendedor and Investir Torres Vedras, the dream took shape, finding a space and a name. Today, ALQOESTE produces small- batch artisanal liqueurs that celebrate flavour, tradition and everything that is made with time and intention.EVENT PARTNERSEVENT PARTNERS P A R T N E R S WELCOME WINE FAIRWELCOME WINE FAIR
