The Horn Resilience Chronicles is an annual publication of the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoAREC&N). It is intended for policymakers, researchers, development practitioners, and community leaders working on environmental sustainability and climate resilience in the Horn of Africa region.
The volume opens with a message from Executive Director Prof. Mekuria Argaw, who calls for strong political will and regional cooperation to address climate impacts. He emphasizes accelerating nature-based solutions, bridging science-policy-practice interfaces, and ensuring inclusive participation of women, youth, and local communities.
A feature article examines the ecological crisis in Djibouti's Day Forest, where deforestation, overgrazing, and climate variability have caused a 50% loss of primary forest cover in four decades. Another article addresses the invasion of Prosopis juliflora across Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti, threatening rangelands and pastoralist livelihoods.
Section 3 covers climate-induced migration in Eastern Africa, discussing how droughts, floods, and land degradation drive population displacement. It references the 2018 Global Compact for Migration and calls for a unified regional strategy to address the root causes of climate migration.
The publication includes news briefs, a photo story, an environment corner, and an entertainment and awareness section. It also presents the CABES Initiative and the Ziway-Shalla Basin as examples of solutions in action for building a resilient continent.
