Every mine is shaped by the ground beneath it and the nation around it. The principles of responsible mining are the same everywhere. F R O M T H E P R E FA C E Born of a training programme for Tanzanian mining engineers, geologists, regulators and administrators, this manual links Tanzanian law, institutions and cases with the standards miners share worldwide — GISTM, ISO 55001, ISO 45001, the ICMM principles and good practice in mine closure. Readers rate themselves, test themselves and apply each chapter at their own mine, from the first blast to the final rehabilitation inspection. I N S I D E T H I S M A N U A L 7 chapters, from policy and safety to water, closure and the digital mine 35 capability statements to rate before and after each chapter 70 self-test questions and 11 problems, with worked answers 20 indicators in a site maturity profile for your own mine 30–90 day field tasks that test the text against site data 1 personal 90-day action plan to turn learning into results A B O U T T H E A U T H O R Prof. Khanindra Pathak is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, with a career spanning more than three decades across academia, industry and policy.
