Kingsmead School Practise to Perfect

Practise to Perfect2 3 Transition The aim of our pastoral provision is to support students to ensure they can succeed in their academic life and can make the most of the opportunities offered to them at Kingsmead. Pastoral Team The Pastoral Team is led by two Assistant Head Teachers. Each year group has an assigned Head of Year and Deputy Head of Year, and together, they are available to support both students and parents. In addition to this, we have dedicated teams and members of staff to support with the wider pastoral provision. This includes: • Dedicated Behaviour for Learning Team • Specialist Mental Health Lead • Medical Room • Inclusion Team • Transition support (Stepping Stones) • Careers Lead • Online safety specialist • Safeguarding Team Emotional and physical wellbeing We are committed to ensuring the emotional and physical wellbeing of all our students, and our staff are there to offer support and guidance, helping to empower students as they navigate their way through secondary school and beyond. Pastoral Care Smooth transition At Kingsmead School and Sixth Form, we understand the importance of smooth transitions at all key stages. This begins in Year 7, as students join us from primary school with work beginning in the summer term. This includes: • Visits to primary school, where our staff will get to know the students that will be joining us and answer any questions they may have. • Parent Information Evenings, allowing parents the opportunity to meet key staff and ask questions. • Two Taster Days – students will attend Kingsmead for a ‘taste’ of lessons, this will include activities designed to help them familiarise themselves with the school and our expectations. There will also be team building activities to support them during transition. • Stepping Stones – this is a programme to support students with transition, which involves a peer mentoring programme. Students will have been identified by their primary schools, indicating that they will benefit from some additional support through the transition process. • August Summer School – invitations will be sent to students who are identified by their primary schools, as individuals who would benefit from our Stepping Stones programme. However, if you would like your child to attend, you can contact our admissions team. There is support available, and carefully planned activities to support transition at all key stages, including making GCSE subject choices and preparation for Post-16 and beyond. To find out more, please visit our website or speak to one of our team. 4 Three key principles Our curriculum is built around three key principles: knowledge- based, literacy-focused, and pupil-centred, ensuring every student develops the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed. 1. A Knowledge-Based Curriculum: Our curriculum provides students with a strong foundation of subject knowledge, taught by specialist teachers. Learning is carefully sequenced to build understanding over time, helping students develop deep knowledge and the skills to apply it effectively. 2. A Literacy-Focused Curriculum: Literacy is at the heart of learning across all subjects. Students develop their vocabulary, reading, writing, and oracy skills, enabling them to communicate confidently and access learning successfully in a range of contexts. 3. A Pupil-Centred Curriculum: Our inclusive curriculum reflects the diverse backgrounds of our students, and it is designed to meet a range of learning needs. It offers appropriate challenge and support, helping every student achieve their full potential. Academic Curriculum 5 Readiness Curriculum Key stages Key Stage 3 Students in Years 7 to 9 follow a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French or Spanish, RE and PE. They also study creative and practical subjects such as Art, Drama, Music, Design Technology, Food, Textiles and Computer Science. Key Stage 4 At Key Stage 4, students follow one of three pathways: Ebacc, Aspire, or Core, selected to best support their strengths, interests, and future aspirations. These pathways provide personalised opportunities that prepare students for further education, university or apprenticeships, and professional careers. Sixth Form From September 2026 we introduced a range of new courses to supplement the 27 A Levels that we already offer. New subjects include BTEC Business, BTEC Criminology, BTEC Sports, BTEC Graphics and Applied Science. High Prior Attainers We provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities designed to challenge, inspire and prepare our High Prior Attainers for future success. These include student-led extracurricular activities, academic challenges, university preparation programmes, The Brilliant Club, HPQ and the EPQ. Support is also offered for prestigious schemes such as UNIQ and Sutton Trust, and we arrange annual visits to Oxford and Cambridge as well as other Russell Group universities. We host regular achievement events that celebrate student success and aspiration. Knowledge, skills and confidence Our Readiness Curriculum provides students with knowledge and skills that will help them develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are able to contribute to the local community. The programme is made up of three key areas: 1: Character Curriculum Delivered as a spiral curriculum with age-appropriate content, our Character Curriculum contributes to the ongoing personal development of our young people enabling them to explore the following areas: • Our school values • Fundamental British Values • Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) development • Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development • Relationships and Sexual Education (RSE) and Health Education • Online safety 2: Careers To prepare our students for the various aspects of adult life, particularly the world of work, we have designed our Careers programme to enable students to explore and understand pathways and opportunities available to them, providing a range of experiences and opportunities focused on careers education and the development of key transferrable skills. These activities include: • Impartial Careers Advice and Guidance • Work Experience (in-person) • Enterprise Activities and skills development workshops • Opportunities to interact with a range of employers and both local and national providers • Online resources to enhance exploration of careers and labour market information • Assemblies and tutor time activities as part of the character curriculum Both the Character Curriculum and Careers programme are delivered through our tutorial programme, Drop Down Days and Assemblies. They are designed to be highly effective and motivating, preparing our students to be able to access a university course or professional career. 3: Enrichment We offer an ambitious and inclusive programme of activities that foster the development of further skills outside of timetabled lessons. This includes trips abroad, participation in the DofE Award Scheme, trips to develop cultural capital and much more. With dedicated time built into the school day from 2.45pm, our Enrichment programme also hosts a wide variety of clubs which is prepared using student voice. A full list can be found on our website. In addition, students are encouraged to take part in half termly challenges that promote independence. 6 7 Making the right choices The Behaviour Curriculum is designed with a system to maximise learning time and provide students with a clear, consistent and predictable response to behaviour. It is about giving students the opportunity to make the right choice, protecting learning and ensuring that everyone at Kingsmead can feel safe, respected and able to succeed. • At Kingsmead, students should understand what is expected of them, be given the opportunity to correct their behaviour and know what will happen if expectations are not met. • We believe that positive behaviour, effort and achievement should be noticed, recognised and celebrated. Our rewards system is designed to ensure that the positive choices students make every day are recognised consistently. Our Achievement Points are directly linked to our four school values: Courage | Nurture | Collaboration | Rigour Students receive recognition through Achievement Points, Golden Tickets and Headteacher Awards. Specialist staff We have specialist staff in place to support students who may be struggling to self-regulate their behaviour or who are facing other challenges that may require intervention to empower our students. For our students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities, we will work closely with parents and carers, as well as a wider team of professionals, to make sure that all young people receive the support they need to make progress in school. At Kingsmead, the students remain at the heart of what we do, and we will offer support where necessary to enable all students to access their learning and go on to have successful futures. Behaviour, wellbeing and inclusion Everyone has a say At Kingsmead School, we really value the input from our students to help make our community a place where everyone feels safe, valued and has a say. Our Year Councils meet regularly and feed into our half termly Student Council Meetings. They discuss concerns raised by their peers and celebrate successes, all of which are then passed on the members of staff as appropriate. Our Head Students also meet with the Senior Leadership Team, who will provide feedback/comments for them to communicate with the student body. For more information about our student voice, please visit our website. Student Voice Performing and Visual Arts Specialist status Kingsmead School officially achieved specialist status in the Performing and Visual Arts in September 2006. At the ‘Arts Heart’ of Kingsmead, is our 280 seat, state of the art theatre venue, which is not only used as a performance space, but also for lectures and speeches. Productions, exhibitions and concerts Our commitment to Performing and Visual Arts (Art, Dance, Drama and Music) is reflected by the productions, exhibitions and concerts that we stage, the activities that both students and staff participate in, the projects we undertake and the community and business links we develop.
