Hello and welcome to the third issue of the Amori Travel ‘At Leisure’ magazine. In this issue we’re celebrating the success of our first holiday and cash prize giveaway - meet the lucky winners on page 26. It soon comes around doesn’t it? No, I’m not talking about the new issue of the magazine - I’m talking about autumn and winter! It’s at this time of year, after the delight (and it was quite delightful this year down in Dorset) of summer has flipped into autumn, I find myself trying not to dwell on the colder months ahead. To me it always feels like summer slips through our fingers, just as we begin to settle into its easy rhythm. How about you? While I can see the appeal of cosying up with candles, a good book and a mug of hot chocolate - light mornings, long summer evenings, and a trip to the beach accompanied by a whippy ice-cream (with a flake of course!) are always the winner for me. There’s nowhere more picturesque through the seasons than the Yorkshire Dales. Do you remember the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’? You can actually book a stay at Skeldale House, where it was filmed. Having recently changed hands to new owners Greg and Lisa, the 7 apartments are perfect for a winter escape, and come with a big dollop of nostalgia included!W E L C O M E B E C H A N R E T R E A T S R I G H T : S e a s c a p e C o t t a g e M a r s k e - b y - t h e - S e a D e n i s e x
GUEST REVIEWS “We’re Lisa and Greg, a couple living in a small village in South Yorkshire. On August 1st, 2025 (Yorkshire Day, no less!), we became the proud owners of Skeldale House in Askrigg. The house is a Grade II listed building with a rich and nostalgic history—it was once used as the original veterinary surgery in the classic TV series All Creatures Great and Small. Today, it’s a luxury serviced accommodation with six beautiful studios and one apartment, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be its new custodians. Between us, we have four grown-up sons and two wonderfully cheeky cockapoos, Chester and Beau - who’ve already claimed the title of self- appointed guardians of Skeldale House. They take their duties very seriously, especially when it involves cleaning up biscuit crumbs! "Superb accommodation in a beautiful little village. Presentation of the apartment was exquisite, excellent bed and bathroom. Will definitely return." Adam, UK THIS ICONIC RESIDENCE IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES IS ENTERING A NEW CHAPTER SKELDALE HOUSE "Beautifully decorated. Lovely combination of period and modern. Very comfortable bed and kitchen facilities just right. A real pleasure to find somewhere so luxurious and dog friendly! In a perfect location in the centre of a picturesque village. With three very good dog friendly pubs and a fantastic bakery all in a very short walk. Lots of amazing dog walks right on the doorstep , especially to Mill Gill and the waterfall." Caroline, UK Lisa + Greg Skeldale House is instantly recognisable as the home of the beloved veterinary surgery in the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Now with a new life as seven luxury apartments, it honours its famous past with heritage charm and thoughtful touches throughout—a place where the echoes of Yorkshire’s favourite vets meet the comfort of a modern-day escape. And now, Skeldale House begins a new chapter—one shaped by its proud new owners, Lisa and Greg, who share their story below... One of our favourite features is The Surgery—a space filled with memorabilia from the original show - books by James Herriot, and vintage veterinary treasures. We’re currently working on transforming it into a peaceful day room, with cosy armchairs, ambient lighting, and shelves of fascinating reads—a place for guests to unwind and soak up the atmosphere. We’re also enjoying getting to know the wonderful local businesses and the lovely Dales folk who make Askrigg so special.” Skeldale House, Askrigg
12Nestled in the heart of Askrigg, Skeldale House is a full of character 19th-century property - now thoughtfully adapted into seven stylish apartments. Original features abound, anchoring the building in its heritage - and retro touches evoke the quiet sophistication of mid-century design. Each apartment is self-contained, with sleek kitchens and stylish luxury bathrooms. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless appeal of the old, or the understated glamour of the mid- century interior, a stay at Skeldale House delivers something special - right in the centre of one of the area’s most picturesque villages.
Each apartment at Skeldale House is named in tribute to the beloved TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, adding a layer of charm and nostalgia to your stay. Guests can choose from the Herriot Suite, the Drovers Suite, and others inspired by the show’s iconic characters and settings. The most spacious of them all is the Tricky-Woo Suite, offering a larger space - a playful nod to the pampered Pekingese who stole hearts on screen. Skeldale House is perfect to use for special family gatherings and events. The whole house can be booked and used for group accommodation, sleeping 20 in spacious comfort. The surgery room can also be booked for business meetings. Enquiries: 0333 012 4074 www.skeldalehouse.co.uk “self-appointed guardians of Skeldale House” ABOVE: CHESTER & BEAU AT LEISURE | 8

just PUFFIN’ ALONGWings, waves, & a whole lot of charm Find out more about this most appealing of seabirds - the Atlantic Puffin
Puffins - stocky little seabirds with tuxedo plumage, clownish beaks, and a walk that could be described as ‘determinedly confused.’ Their charm lies not just in their looks, but in their behaviour: they flap like they’ve just remembered they’re late for something, and dive with the grace of a bowling ball in freefall! During breeding season, puffins return to the same cliffside burrows year after year, often reuniting with the same mate. It’s oddly romantic - like a windswept rom-com starring birds who never quite mastered landing. They’re also amazingly photogenic. Tourists on the Farne Islands have been known to miss entire boat departures while trying to capture the perfect puffin pose - usually involving a puffin staring judgmentally into the lens like a tiny feathered critic! Despite their comic characters - puffins are resilient, loyal, and surprisingly fast underwater. They have the kind of appeal that makes you smile. In a world of sleek falcons and majestic eagles, puffins remind us that awkward can be beautiful too. Did you know? • Despite looking like wind-up toys, Puffins can fly up to 55 mph. They flap their wings up to 400 times per minute to stay airborne. • They’re expert divers - plunging up to 200 feet underwater to catch fish using their wings like flippers. • Puffins can carry up to 10 fish at once - thanks to a clever hinge in their beak and a rough palate that holds onto the fish while they catch more. • They shed their beaks in winter. The bright outer layer falls off, leaving a duller version until breeding season returns. • A baby puffin is called a “puffling” - possibly the cutest name in all of ornithology! • They drink seawater - and filter out the salt using special glands in their nostrils.puffinParticulars AT LEISURE | 12

First class communication from the owner. Would highly recommend’ GUEST REVIEWS Excellent stay in beautiful surroundings ‘Easy check in, responsive host and excellent facilities’
Ewyas Harold Castle was one of England’s earliest motte-and-bailey fortifications, with roots reaching back to the Saxon era—long before the Norman Conquest. Though no stone walls remain today, its legacy still shapes the village that bears its name. Nestled in Herefordshire’s Golden Valley, Ewyas Harold Castle is believed to have first been constructed around 1048 by Osbern Pentecost, a Norman knight in Saxon service. This makes it one of the rare pre-Conquest castles in England. The site likely replaced an earlier Saxon fortification, possibly a burg built during the 10th century to defend the borderlands. Positioned above the Dulas Brook, the castle’s strategic location offered commanding views and control over the valley. In 1052, the original structure was destroyed—either by Welsh raiders or on the orders of Earl Godwin. After the Norman invasion, William Fitz Osbern, Earl of Hereford, rebuilt the castle, reinforcing its role in the Marches as a defensive outpost. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, the castle was well established, with records noting its jurisdiction over churches, land, and even honey production. The castle’s design followed the classic motte-and-bailey layout: a raised mound (motte) topped with timber or stone defenses, and a lower enclosed courtyard (bailey) for domestic and military use. Today, only earthworks remain—the motte rises approximately 13 meters above the surrounding ditch, and the bailey is defined by scarp slopes and faint ramparts. Though time has erased its walls, Ewyas Harold Castle still anchors the village’s identity. The church, nearby commons, and even local place names echo its medieval past. For visitors and historians alike, the site offers a quiet but powerful reminder of England’s layered history— where Saxon ambition, Norman conquest, and rural life converge. meet the owner Helen, the owner of Hillside Holiday Let, has strong ties with the area of Ewyas Harold. Her mother's family moved to the village in the 1930's, and her aunt taught at the local school. The house has now passed into Helen’s ownership and has a new lease of life as a holiday let. Helen loves art and nature, and has infused a relaxed boho style into the property.
