Panelist Bio: Dear Friends, WELCOME Welcome to the inaugural edition of From Vision to Impact, our first annual Impact Report and Virtual-A- Thon Program. Whether you have been helping to build this scholarship from its very beginning, recently learned about our mission, or are discovering us for the first time, we are deeply grateful that you have taken a few moments to share in this journey with our family. This scholarship was established to honor a life that continues to inspire us every day. While our loved one can never be replaced, we have chosen to transform our loss into opportunity—creating a legacy that opens doors for aspiring engineering students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Through every scholarship awarded, every book voucher presented, and every student encouraged to continue pursuing their dreams, we are reminded that one life can continue making a difference in the lives of many. When we launched this scholarship, we hoped it would become more than a financial award. We envisioned a community of builders who believe in the power of education, the importance of #HBCUexcellence, and the incredible potential of future engineers to strengthen our communities throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and the broader African Diaspora. As noted in the flags on the front cover, the African Union, the Caribbean (in sequence of independence), Ghana (Brik’s African Inspiration), and a depiction of the pride of African-American roots and experience, our focus is global. The response during our inaugural year exceeded anything we could have imagined. Because of the generosity of family, friends, colleagues, community supporters, and builders from across the country, we were able to raise nearly $24,000, award scholarships and book vouchers to ten outstanding engineering students, begin building a permanent endowment, and launch a growing movement that continues to gain momentum in its second year. The Built Brick by Brik Legacy Scholarship was born from a simple but powerful conviction shared by our family: Within days of losing our beloved son, brother, and friend in 2017, our family began asking a difficult question: How could we honor a life that had inspired so many others? As we reflected on Brik’s remarkable journey, one answer became unmistakably clear. Engineering was not simply his profession—it was his calling. From childhood, Brik possessed an extraordinary curiosity for understanding how things worked and an uncommon ability to solve problems. Throughout his career, he generously shared that passion by mentoring engineers and others pursuing technical careers, believing that knowledge was meant to be passed forward. The idea of creating a scholarship emerged almost immediately. Our first efforts focused on establishing it through his beloved alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University, an HBCU that helped shape the engineer and leader Brik became. Recently we made a decision that would change everything: to expand our reach and build a scholarship ourselves. That decision transformed remembrance into action. In the summer of 2025, we announced something new was coming. Just weeks later, with what would have been his 50th year serving as both inspiration and deadline, we launched the inaugural Virtual-A-Thon and scholarship campaign. What began as an ambitious dream quickly became something far greater than we imagined. In only six weeks, builders from across the country joined our family to raise nearly $24,000, providing scholarships and book vouchers to ten outstanding engineering students attending HBCUs. Students from five Historically Black Colleges and Universities submitted applications during our inaugural year, representing a wide range of engineering disciplines and sharing remarkable stories of perseverance, leadership, and purpose. Together, builders also helped establish the foundation of a permanent endowment that will continue expanding opportunities for future scholars. Perhaps the most meaningful realization came as we personally called recipients to share the news of their awards and watched our first scholarship checks arrive on campuses. In those moments, our family understood that this was no longer simply an idea—it had become a living legacy. Today, the scholarship continues to grow beyond anything we envisioned. Applications now reach students across an expanding network of HBCUs. Builders have become recurring partners in the mission. Volunteers have generously given their time and talents. Family, friends, and supporters have come together to build something that none of us could have accomplished alone. At its heart, this scholarship reflects the values that shaped the life we honor: engineering excellence, mentorship, service, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. It also reflects our family's enduring commitment to HBCUs, whose engineering programs have long produced generations of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders who strengthen communities throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and across the African Diaspora. describe him as “brilliant,” but what made that brilliance remarkable was how lightly he wore it. He rarely needed to prove how much he knew; instead, he used what he knew to help others. After earning his engineering degree from an HBCU that he loved deeply—North Carolina A&T State University, he built a successful career and later established his own business, VuTech. Yet colleagues, friends, and younger professionals consistently remember something more important than his technical accomplishments: he made time for people. Whether he was speaking with a friend experiencing life events, a young professional trying to navigate a career decision, or someone exploring a related technical field, he gave them his full attention. He listened carefully, encouraged generously, and shared knowledge without hesitation. Many people left conversations with him feeling more confident than when they arrived. He also carried a deep sense of responsibility to Haiti, the Caribbean, and the broader African Diaspora. He believed that talented people should not only succeed personally but also help strengthen the communities that shaped them. That belief influenced the way he mentored others, the way he conducted business, and the way he showed up for family and friends. The Legacy Lives On What those closest to Brik remember most is not a single achievement, but a collection of moments. They remember the laughter. They remember the music. They remember how he could make a room feel lighter within minutes. They remember that when he spoke with someone, he focused completely on that person—as if, for that conversation, nothing else mattered. His humor was quick, his intuition was sharp, and his compassion was genuine. He celebrated other people’s successes with the same enthusiasm he brought to his own, and he carried an uncommon combination of confidence and humility that drew people toward him naturally. When he died in 2017, our family searched for a way to honor not only what he accomplished, but who he was. The answer became the Built Brick by Brik Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship exists because Brik believed in education, in mentorship, in HBCUs, and in the extraordinary potential of young people pursuing engineering and related fields. It exists because he spent his life encouraging others to build, create, solve problems, and dream bigger. And it exists because we wanted future students—many of who will never have the chance to meet him—to benefit from the values that defined his life. As a family we often reflect: We often find ourselves smiling while doing this scholarship building work because it feels less like creating a memorial and more like continuing a conversation he started long ago—one of excellence, opportunity, service, and helping the next generation go farther than he did. TOGETHER, WE BUILD We Are All Building, Together. The Built Brick by Brik Legacy Scholarship exists because people chose to build together. Every donor, volunteer, reviewer, sponsor, recurring supporter, and advocate has placed another brick in a legacy that is opening doors for HBCU engineering students. Some have given financially.
