The MPH program moves quickly. Students who excel in the program typically do three things early on: stay organized, connect with their classmates, and explore opportunities outside of class time. This guide was created using advice shared by former MPH students, faculty, and staff to help you get oriented and settled here at Upstate to start the year with confidence.

PARKING Must-Know Campus Info shuttles Upstate Medical University offers commuter students garage, shuttle, and evening/weekend parking. You must register your car with the Parking Office to obtain relevant parking passes. Garage parking is limited, and most students will be assigned to one of our Shuttle lots. Shuttle Lots passes are free and Include I Lot, R Lot and LC Lot. These lots are closed on Saturdays and Sundays with no access. Shuttle lot parkers may park in the Garage East on these days. Campus Lots after hours are the B1, B3 and B4 Lots. Access to these lots Monday through Friday starting at 4 pm to 7 am and all day on weekends and campus red holidays. This is a free service for those students who register their cars with the parking office. Parking for Geneva Tower residents is offered through Geneva Tower. More information, include lot locations and options can be found through the Department of Parking Services. Upstate provides free shuttle services for Upstate students between Campus buildings and shuttle lots. Shuttle service runs Mondays from 4:00am-Saturday 1:00 am. Shuttles run continuously between the shuttle lots and campus buildings during peak ridership times (4:00am-9:30 am; 2:30pm-6:00pm), and through scheduled and OnDemand Service during off peak times. OnDemand Service is available via the TransLoc app for transport between Downtown Campus buildings and shuttle lots. More information, include shuttle schedules can be found through the Department of Parking Services. student food security Paley’s Pantry is open for in-person shopping/visits to the pantry by appointment. Shopping appointments are available on various Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 pm. The pantry is located in room 130 of the Library. If you are able, we ask that you please bring your own bags! Any SUNY Upstate Medical University student who is experiencing food insecurity is encouraged to sign up for a shopping appointment online. Pantry pick-up and distance learner requests are also available. Upstate also offers a Student Value Grab-and-Go Meal Ordering Program, where students can order $4 meals during the week for pick up in the Hospital. Learn more from Food Services. The Library The Health Sciences Library can be accessed on the 1 floor of Weiskotten Hall. Students can access and book study space, access writing and literature search support, and access a library card. Interested students can register for After Hours Building Access. Join a student interest group, such as: Public Health Interest Group Environmental Justice and Sustainability Graphic Medicine Club Health Justice Conference Find more student interest groups at: https://campuslife.upstate.edu/organizations Upstate Public Health Programs Master of Public Health: A 42-credit degree, which can be completed in one year that provides a population-based perspective and is designed to prepare students to investigate and manage public health problems. MD/MPH: Five-year dual degree program, where the MPH is typically completed prior to four years of medical education. MPH is awarded with the MD degree. Bridge to MD: Students who are interested in medicine complete an MPH degree. Successful completion of Bridge to MD requirements (e.g., MPH GPA, MCAT score) guarantees an interview. with the MD program, although admission is not guaranteed. Public Health Scholars: Pathway to MD program where students are granted a conditional acceptance to the MD program with GPA, MCAT, and professionalism requirements during the MPH. Program Concentrations Students enrolled in the above programs will be placed in a concentration that aligns with their interests and goals. Population Health for Clinicians focuses on the impact that public health issues and social determinants have on patient and community health and healthcare. (Required for Public Health Scholars, Bridge to MD) Global Health and Translational Sciences focuses on understanding and developing solutions to global health problems. Public Health Methods equips students to manage public health problems by acquiring skills to reduce 1. disease and disability at the community level.

CNYCNYCNY EXPLOREEXPLOREEXPLORE Syracuse takes its sports seriously. With Syracuse University, root for the orange all year round! The Syracuse Mets and Crunch offer up baseball and hockey entertainment as well. Being only 2 hours from Buffalo, there is also ample opportunity to cheer on the Buffalo Bills! There are many venues and opportunities to check out live music in Central NY. Syracuse is home to the Empower Ampitheater that sits on the shores of Onondaga Lake, as well as the historic Landmark and Palace Theaters. Local restaurants and breweries, like Funk ‘n Waffles and Middle Ages, or neighborhood parks offer live music throughout the year as well. The State Fair brings artists in for free performances. Central NY is perfectly situated to enjoy nature. if you’re looking for water, our local lakes, like Onondaga, Oneida, and Green Lakes, offer walking trails, rental boats, and recreation. We’re also in close proximity to the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario. The Adirondack Mountains and the Catskill Mountains are also only a short drive away! Each year, The Great New York State Fair signifies the end of summer in Syracuse. The Fair offers great opportunities to explore culture and cuisine from across New York. Local food influencers and journalists offer reviews for all budgets. Some fan favorites include the cookie and milk bar, loaded baked potatoes, and turkey legs. Check it out at the end of August through Labor Day. Agriculture is a big part of Upstate New York’s economy. Throughout the year, you can shop for fresh produce, flowers, and artisan goods at the Central NY Regional Market, which offers over 400 vendors as one of the largest markets on the East Coast. Many neighborhoods throughout the area also offer weekly and monthly markets. Syracuse is a culturally rich city. Each season, there are a variety of festivals. In the fall, visit Apple Fest, Irish Fest, a film festival, and Fashion Week. Winterfest in the Inner Harbor brings holiday spirit during a long, cold season. St. Patrick’s Day related activities are ample in the Spring. Summer brings Taste of Syracuse, the St. Sophia Greek Culutral Fest, the Polish Festival, Pride, Juneteenth Celebrations, Blues and Jazz festivals, Middle Eastern fest, Scottish Games, and more! Central NY is an expert at winter. Lean into the long season with ice skating downtown, cross- country skiing or snowshoeing, sledding. Downhill skiing and tubing can be found within a short drive from Syracuse. Local hobby craft groups, trivia or bingo night, and art classes at nearby businesses, restaurants, and breweries offer more ways to stay involved this winter! The region is home to many beautiful waterfalls. Niagara Falls is a 2-3 hour drive west. Locally, Chittenango Falls, Tinker Falls, Three Falls Woods, Delphi Falls, and Carpenter Falls are just a selection of beautiful landscapes that offer the opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature.
