PORTFOLIO ARCHITECTURAL

Hi, I am Preethika Shalini Mahendran, a fourth- year architecture student at NIT Trichy. I enjoy reading about buildings and questioning the thoughts behind their design. What worked, what didn't, and why. I may not always find the answers, but I remain curious about how these architectural ideas translate into built spaces and tangible experiences. This curiosity drives me to explore architecture beyond the studio and learn how design evolves from concept to reality. LEISER ITZE Louis Isadore Kahn Memorial Ahmedabad, India Monumentality is enigmatic. It cannot be intentionally created. — Louis I. Kahn A tribute to Louis Kahn’s architectural legacy in Ahmedabad and beyond, the memorial seeks to preserve his works and celebrate his architectural philosophy. The journey begins at a monumental entrance, symbolising Kahn’s transformation through his encounter with ancient architecture and guiding visitors from darkness into light. As visitors explore his displayed works, the interplay of light, shadow and materials brings his architectural philosophy to life, allowing the building itself to become an expression of Kahn’s architectural identity.

Hospitals are often entered with worry, uncertainty, and concern for our loved ones. While these feelings may be unavoidable, the spaces we inhabit need not add to the burden. Developed through multiple iterations, the design prioritises functional proximity and efficient circulation while fostering a calmer healing environment. An L-shaped building embraces a central healing garden, where a lake, flowing water channels, shaded seating, and accessible pathways offer moments of sensory comfort. Two terrace gardens, skylights, and visual connections to greenery extend this experience throughout the building. We may not be able to take away the worry, but we can choose not to add to it.

Rooted in Indian architectural traditions, the residence explores a balance between cultural identity and contemporary living. Clerestory roofing, wooden façade elements, and a central courtyard reinterpret familiar vernacular features within a modern residential setting, creating a distinctive architectural character suited to the context of Tiruchirappalli. Shared spaces, including the courtyard and poolside seating, foster community interaction while balancing privacy and openness. 17 PREETHIKA SHALINI M 18 ILLAM Residence for the Director, NIT Tiruchirappalli ILLAM
