Conflict Theory by Karl Marx explains that a person's identity is shaped by power, economic inequalities, and social conflict. It focuses on four key concepts: Social Inequality and Power, the division between the Bourgeoisie who own resources and the Proletariat who work for them, the gap between Dominant and Marginalized Groups, and Ideology that justifies these inequalities. Our group expected to observe how power and unequal access to resources influence how students behave and interact in the school library.OUR SOCIOLOGICAL LENS
Our observation was conducted in the school library from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM. The library was a quiet and organized environment where students were reading, studying, and doing school-related activities. We observed how students behaved and interacted with others within the library setting.OUR OBSERBATION SETTINGS
OBSERVATION 1 : Students Studying and Rviewing 1. What happened? - Some students stayed in the library to review their lessons and study for their classes. 2. What actions/reactions were observed? - They read books, used their phones or laptops, and worked on their activities quietly. 3. What sociological concept is demonstrated? -Socialization and conformity. 4. How does the theory explain the situation? - Students follow the expected behavior in the library by being quiet and focusing on theirSOCIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE
SOCIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE Observation 2: Teachers Conducting Online Classes 1. What happened? - Some teachers used the library as a place to attend or conduct their online classes. 2. What actions/reactions were observed? - They used their laptops or phones and stayed focused during their classes. 3. What sociological concept is demonstrated? - Social roles. 4.How does the theory explain the situation? - Teachers act according to their role and responsibilities even when working outside a traditional
Observation 3: Hanging Out and Socializing 1. What happened? - Some students stayed in the library mainly to talk and spend time with their friends or enjoy the air conditioning. 2. What actions/reactions were observed? - They chatted, laughed, and interacted with their friends while relaxing. 3. What sociological concept is demonstrated? -Social interaction. 4. How does the theory explain the situation? - People naturally interact and build relationships through conversations and shared activities, even in places mainly intended for studying.
1. The self is influenced by the purpose of the environment. – The library provides a quiet space where students can read, study, and focus on their academic tasks. 2. People use the same environment differently. – Students used the library for reading and studying, while some teachers used the space for their online classes. This shows that people's roles and responsibilities influence how they use a shared environment. 3 . The environment can shape people's behavior. – Because the library is a quiet and academic place, students and teachers adjusted their behavior by staying focused and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere. WHAT DID WE DISCOVER ABOUT THE SELF?
GROUP REFLECTION Observing our school library helped me understand how people behave differently depending on their purpose and role. I noticed that some students were focused on studying and doing their activities, while others were there to talk and spend time with their friends. I also observed teachers attending or conducting online classes, showing how they continue to perform their responsibilities even outside the classroom. These observations showed me the importance of socialization, social roles, and social interaction in our daily lives. I learned that the library is not only a place for studying but also a place where people communicate, build relationships, and fulfill their responsibilities. Overall, the experience helped me understand how sociological concepts can be seen in simple situations around us
