Blending This is the third skill in Jolly Phonics
Cracking the alphabet code - reading Sprifferton Clopturing Howtonby
First learn the letter-sounds. To Read a Word s a t
Then blend the sounds to read the word. s a t Blending helps you to read!

The Teacher Book suggests blending words. It also contains a bank of extra words for you to write on the board.
Where else can you do Blending? • Further blending words can be found in the Word Bank on page 89 of your Teacher’s Book. • Blending song (see next slide) • Arm blending • Find blending games on your games sheet. Jolly Song Extra: Word bank or further blending practice ( in Teacher’s Book)
Safe Words • Safe words are regular phonetic words that only contain sounds that learners have already been taught. It is vital that learners are not set-up for failure by being expected to read or write words that contain sounds that they have not yet learnt. • Lists of safe words are found within each Lesson and in the Word Bank at the back of the Teacher’s Guide, page 89
The Blending Song You can sing the blending song for any words with three sounds (phonemes). Here are some examples: sat shop cat dog this wet run Page 63: Teacher Guide
• Consonant blends (Page 64 Teacher Guide) Examples in the following slides
Page 64 Teacher’s Guide Game 4: Consonant blending with arm
Write these words on the board to practice consonant blends – Page 64 Teacher’s Guide
Consonant vowel snaps Copy these into your notebook
Double letter sounds • Make sure the children know that when they blend words that have two letters with the same sound next to each other it is only necessary to say the sound once e.g. d-u-ck and not d-u-c-k h-i-ss and not h-i-s-s

How do we know what to do in the Pupil’s Book?
Sounding: For the first few sounds you can do auditory sounding using these words. Next you can do the sounding activity in the pupil book – sounding is explained in the next section. Guidance on pronunciation These steps are discussed in the following sections Extra Blending Words
Auditory Blending up to /t/ sound
/p/ and /i/ the word bank is auditory only
Sounding This is the fourth skill in Jolly Phonics ‘Listening for Sounds in Words’

Sounding • In the pupil books, using the pictures on each page. Can children hear the sound? • Count sounds in words given in the word bank in the Teacher’s Book Why do we do sounding?
Dictation Can you find dication in your teacher book? • This is connected to sounding. In order to write a word you need to be able to hear the sounds. • This is Step 7 in Jolly Phonics. You will find dictation in your Teacher Book.
