Hindi Lahat ng Ninanais ay Nararapat Hindi Lahat ng Ninanais ay NararapatImagine you and your family have been saving up for months or even years towards the vacation of your dreams. All of a sudden, you find out that your child needs urgent medical treatment, and the money you've been saving for that vacation may be the only thing that can afford it. You're now in a serious position where you have to make a choice between giving up on a dream you've had for so long, or saving the life of the child you love.Of course, both needs and wants are important, but families should prioritize needs over wants because being truly responsible means choosing what matters most, even when it requires sacrificing something they desire.

The difference between needs and wants is important for making responsible financial decisions. Consumer demand and social trends can influence people's preferences, sometimes causing them to value dream experiences over necessary expenses. Demand refers to consumers' willingness and ability to buy goods and services. Advertisements, trends, and popular products can influence purchasing decisions, but consumers should not let these influences control their spending. Since financial resources are limited, families must allocate their money wisely and prioritize essential expenses. In the family's situation, using their savings for urgent medical treatment means postponing their long-awaited vacation. However, choosing the vacation despite being unable to afford the child's treatment could put the child's health at risk. Therefore, understanding the difference between needs and wants helps families make wiser and more responsible purchasing decisions.According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 44% of American adults reported difficulty affording at least one basic necessity in the past year. Additionally, the Federal Reserve reported that 63% of adults could cover an unexpected $400 expense using cash, savings, or a credit card paid off by the next statement. These findings highlight the financial challenges many Americans face when managing their expenses and preparing for unexpected costs. This supports the importance of prioritizing essential needs and managing money wisely.

Making responsible decisions also requires self- discipline and the ability to recognize our obligations to others. Prudence helps us think carefully before spending, while temperance teaches us to control our desires. Stewardship reminds us to manage our resources wisely, and generosity encourages us to care for people who need help. Integrity means remaining faithful to our responsibilities, even when doing so is difficult. Discernment helps us distinguish what is truly necessary from what we simply desire. In this situation, these values guide the family to prioritize their child's urgent medical treatment instead of spending their savings on a vacation.Love is not measured by the amount of pleasure we allow ourselves, but by the responsibility we are willing to take. Sometimes, love means giving up what we want so we can provide what someone else needs. In the family's situation, prioritizing their child's medical treatment over their dream vacation demonstrates love, responsibility, and wise decision-making.

Some would argue that wants are more important in the family’s situation because vacations can give pure joy, relaxation and the chance to make good family memories. It’s a fair argument that people should have the opportunity to enjoy the rewards of their labor. But there is, however, a difference to be made between something being worthwhile and it being more important than a real need.To prioritize needs first doesn't mean that happiness is ruled out, it simply means that some obligations cannot just be simply brushed away. Prioritizing needs over wants is like building a house, the foundation must be properly done before additional aesthetics can be added. In the same way, people must first secure necessary expenses, such as medical treatment, before spending money on luxuries like vacations. The needs and wants decision is ultimately more than money. It's a decision about what we value, what we stand for, and what kind of people we are. If we are careful with our resources, careful with our desires, and generous to others, then we learn how to make responsible decisions. Therefore, let us learn to clearly separate our needs from our wants, make responsible financial decisions, and accomplish obligations before seeking personal desires.

A well-lived life isn't measured by how many desires we have fulfilled. It's measured on how we make the decision when our desires are mixed with our responsibilities. The vacation can be cancelled, the dream can be fulfilled again someday, but, when it comes to the well-being of our own child, the greatest reward is not in getting to the dream destination. The greatest reward is knowing we chose to prioritize the people we love when it really matters.
