Foreword It is a pleasure to welcome breeders, owners and racing enthusiasts to the initial edition of the Tasmanian Stallion Directory. Tasmania has a proud thoroughbred breeding tradition and, while our industry may be smaller than those on the mainland, it has consistently demonstrated an ability to produce horses capable of competing successfully at the highest levels. At the heart of that success are our local breeders, studs and stallion owners who continue to invest in the future of the Tasmanian thoroughbred. The purpose of this directory is simple: to showcase the stallions available to breeders here in Tasmania and provide an informative resource when planning their upcoming matings. This year’s stallion line-up offers breeders an exciting mix of Group 1 performance, proven sires, emerging young stallions and internationally recognised bloodlines. There are stallions who have already demonstrated their ability to produce Group and stakes performers, alongside younger horses whose first crops provide plenty of reason for optimism. Importantly, Tasmania continues to offer breeders access to quality stallions without necessarily having to send mares interstate. Supporting our local stallions also supports the studs, breeders, owners and businesses that form an important part of Tasmania's racing and breeding industry. Throughout this directory, we have tried to go beyond simply presenting pedigrees and race records. Each stallion profile highlights the qualities that make that horse an interesting breeding proposition, including performance, progeny results, pedigree patterns and potential mating opportunities. Ultimately, selecting a stallion is an individual decision. Every mare is different and every breeder has their own objectives, whether breeding to race, breeding commercially or simply chasing the dream of producing their next good horse. We hope the Tasmanian Stallion Directory helps make that decision a little easier and, importantly, encourages breeders to take a closer look at the quality of stallions standing right here in Tasmania. BODYGUARD 95 Mares in His First Season — Breeders Have Spoken Few first-season stallions receive a vote of confidence quite like Bodyguard, who covered an outstanding 95 mares in his debut season at stud. That level of support provides an exciting foundation for the young stallion and underlines the confidence breeders have placed in his pedigree, racetrack ability and potential to make his mark as a sire. A high-class juvenile on the racetrack, Bodyguard possessed the speed and precocity Australian breeders continually search for. Sizzling– Snitzel- Admirelle (General Nediym) Service fee $5,500 Incl. GST Combining brilliant natural speed, exceptional toughness and an outstanding temperament, Sizzling progressed from an elite juvenile to become a proven sire. A $260,000 Magic Millions yearling by four-time Australian Champion Sire Snitzel, Sizzling proved well named when recording a six-length debut victory at Eagle Farm. Quickly establishing himself as a high-class juvenile, Sizzling was at the forefront of the major two-year-old races before striking outstanding form during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. After a dominant 4½-length victory in the Listed Ken Russell Classic, Sizzling showed great heart and determination to prevail in the Gr.2 Champagne Classic despite race conditions that were against him. He was sent out odds-on again in the Gr.2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes, overcoming an outside draw to produce another barnstorming finish and score by 1¾ lengths. He then completed four consecutive victories with an even more dominant performance in the Gr.1 T.J. Smith Classic. At three, Sizzling added the Listed Gold Edition Plate and the Gr.2 Queensland Guineas to his record, retiring a seven-time winner of more than $1.3 million in prize money. SQUAMOSA Not A Single Doubt –Class Success The Not A Single Doubt branch of the Danehill sire line is in flying form and Squamosa with his record of regularly siring winners is one of its quiet achievers. Joining Extreme Choice, Farnan and Anders as Not A Single Doubt horses to sire stakes winners, Squamosa was the first of that group to stud - being a member of his high achieving sire's second crop. Showing early toe, Squamosa easily won a couple of trials before starting odds-on at his Kensington debut; duly saluting by a soft three lengths. Again a hot favourite at Randwick second up, the bay travelled so well on pace that he was able to take over a long way from home; the winning margin again three lengths. It was a win that saw Squamosa start favourite in the G3 Run To The Rose in which he was always Run down only late by Toorak Toff in the Gr.1 Golden Rose Stakes at his next outing, Squamosa was off the scene for ten months - returning with another very easy (4 3/4 lengths) victory in the Listed June Stakes. Retiring to stud a four time winner from seven starts, Squamosa has not served big books but he has achieved a 63.5% winners-to-runners strike rate with Kiwi Ida (nine wins, three in Group company) and the speedy Order Of Command (eight wins, two at Listed level) his headliners. Another four of Squamosa's progeny have earned black-type whilst 28 are metropolitan winners. Squamosa is a son of the dual Listed winning Success Express mare Class Success, half-sister to the durable (ten wins) stakes winner Phered from an internationally prolific black-type family; one represented by the stakes winners Vidor, Jo Knows, Semillon, Myfriendwil, Petite Fantasy and Desert Fantasy. STRATOSPHERE Proven Speed — Proven Stakes Success Stratosphere continues to strengthen his credentials as one of Tasmania’s proven sources of speed, with his progeny demon- strating the ability to win early, progress through the grades and compete successfully at stakes level. A son of outstanding stallion Snitzel, Stratosphere brings breeders access to one of the most influential speed sire lines in Aus- tralian racing. Snitzel’s extraordinary influence continues through both his sons and daughters, making Stratosphere an attrac- tive option for breeders seeking speed, precocity and commercial appeal.
