October Edition Connect Five Driving Impact Forward

Monthly newsletter of the Columbia (SC) Chapter of The Links, featuring programming updates, literacy initiatives, and community events for October.

This is the October edition of the Columbia (SC) Chapter of The Links newsletter, titled Connect Five: Driving Impact Forward. It is written for chapter members and community partners, highlighting service-driven programming and the chapter's focus on literacy and friendship.

The newsletter outlines the Connect Five smart goals for literacy. By the end of the school year, the chapter aims to provide read-aloud sessions to at least 300 students in grades K-5 at Carver Lyon and distribute 750 age-appropriate books to students in grades 3-5. Progress will be tracked by students served, sessions conducted, and books shared.

A major feature is the Jubilee Festival Kid Zone, a partnership with Historic Columbia. The event offered STEM and robotics demonstrations, a book giveaway, smoothie-making, an opera read-aloud, and a civic engagement mural project. Partners included Scholastic Books, Riverbanks Zoo, SC ETV, and others.

The International Trends and Services section describes a Peace Day activity where students write positive words about peace and letters to a school in Nairobi, Kenya. Other sections briefly cover Health & Human Services, National Trends and Services, and The Arts, including opera-themed read-alouds and lap quilts.
