Designed in response to the widening gap between architectural education and professional practice, the project integrates learning, research, incubation, digital fabrication, and collaborative workspaces within a unified campus environment. The design moves beyond the conventional institutional model by creating an interactive ecosystem where knowledge exchange, experimentation, and entrepreneurship coexist. Organized around vibrant public plazas and connected through fluid circulation, the campus encourages interdisciplinary collaboration while responding to Pune's climate through passive design strategies, shaded open spaces, and context-sensitive architecture. PORTFOLIO | ASMITA GAWADE 10 Location: Kolhapur,Maharashtra Site Area: 27 Acre +11 Acre Lake Built-up Area: 7448 sq.m Typology: Urban Design -A Vibrant mixed used Community The proposal for the Shahu Mills Precinct in Kolhapur adopts a context- sensitive urban design strategy that carefully preserves the site's industrial heritage while reimagining it as a vibrant mixed-use destination. Rooted in the historical identity of the precinct, the masterplan is organized around a central public spine that connects cultural, commercial, and residential zones through a series of open spaces and pedestrian-friendly streets. The cultural precinct, located near the entrance, adaptively reuses existing mill structures, with the preserved chimney serving as a symbolic landmark and visual anchor. The commercial zone activates the public realm through retail, services, and lively plazas, encouraging social interaction and economic activity. Toward the interior, the residential precinct provides a quieter environment with low-rise housing, shared courtyards, and landscaped green buffers. A clear hierarchy of built forms, integrated public spaces, and climate-responsive design strategies creates a cohesive urban fabric. PORTFOLIO | ASMITA GAWADE 13 Location: Pashan-Sus Road, Pune Site Area: 3960 sq.m Built-up Area: 21,384 sq.m Typology: Commercial Complex β Offices, Retail & Multiplex Boxed Urbanity is a commercial complex located on Pashan-Sus Road, Pune, designed as a real-world response to high-density, mixed-use development. It integrates office spaces, retail outlets, and a multiplex into a vertically stacked form that maximizes FSI while maintaining architectural elegance. The design challenges the notion of conventional, monotonous commercial forms by using thoughtful proportions, faΓ§ade articulation, and passive design strategies to create a refined urban mass. With climate-responsive shading devices, efficient parking systems, and vibrant public zones, the project redefines commercial architecture as functional, flexible, and visually compelling. PORTFOLIO | ASMITA GAWADE 17 My internship at Manoj Patel Design Studio was a transformative journey that extended far beyond academic learning. It offered me a real-world understanding of how architecture operates at the intersection of design, sustainability, culture, and construction realities. Being part of a studio that prioritizes vernacular materials and climate-responsive design challenged me to think critically about the social and environmental responsibilities of architecture today. During my time at the studio, I participated in various stages of the design processβfrom concept development and material exploration to preparing working drawings and attending site visits. One of the most valuable lessons I gained was the significance of detailing and execution, and how each design decision directly influences a buildingβs performance, usability, and longevity.
